An outdoor memorial for your pet, made for West
West has an estimated 970 dog- or cat-owning households. When a stone is the memorial you want, the local climate, your yard and any HOA or lease rules all shape the right choice.

West, Texas
Where a stone can go in West
Strong prairie winds, summer hail and the occasional ice storm test any memorial left outside in McLennan County. A solid granite marker set flush with the ground resists wind and mowers, while taller or lighter pieces can topple. If you want a living memorial, a native such as a cedar elm, a bur oak or a Texas redbud tolerates the heavy blackland soil.
West is known for its Czech heritage, from kolache bakeries along the interstate to the Westfest celebration each Labor Day weekend. Some families draw on that tradition for a memorial: a pillow or wall hanging embroidered with Czech folk patterns and the pet's name, or a carved wooden box with a traditional design. A quiet, plain urn is just as fitting.
On a property near West, a big natural boulder can make a striking memorial, but moving one is serious work. A tractor bucket or skid steer can shift it, yet stones slip and roll; keep people well clear, and never stand downhill. For anything over a few hundred pounds, ask the engraver whether they can carve it where it will stay.
With roughly 2,629 residents, West is the 278th-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Grand Prairie, about 61 miles (98 km) away, which is where some providers serving West are based.
West sits within easy reach of Hillsboro (15 miles, a larger centre), Whitney (17 miles) and Waco (18 miles, a larger centre). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from West; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.
Our estimate
970
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in West
How we calculated this
2,629 ÷ 2.5 = 1,052 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 970. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate

How we calculated this
970 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 80 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

How local customs shape pet memorials
As cremation has grown to about 55.7%[5] of deaths in Texas, many pet cemeteries have added small plots just for ashes. These usually take a smaller flat marker than a full grave and cost less to open. If a cemetery appeals but a whole plot feels like too much, ask whether it has an ashes section and what size stone it allows there.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Texas figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in West tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Frost, sun and damp: matching stone to West
Plan installation around the heat. Setting a stone in West means digging, leveling and tamping gravel, which is heavy work when August highs sit near 97°F. An early morning in spring or fall is easier, and the ground is often softer then. There's no rush: a temporary marker holds the spot perfectly well through summer.
Where summers peak around 97°F, as they do in West in August, plants beside a memorial stone need to be tough. Drought-tolerant groundcovers, gravel mulch or a small native shrub look good without daily watering. Our memorial tree finder can suggest a tree or shrub that copes with local heat if you'd like something to grow beside the stone.

How much to budget for a pet stone
Lead times vary more than prices. Natural engraved stones from one US maker arrive in ~1 week[6], made-to-order granite and bronze markers take 2–4 weeks[7], and a new full-size headstone from a monument company can take 6–12 weeks[8]. If you want the stone in place for an anniversary in West, order well ahead.

Permissions worth checking in Texas
If you own your home, you can usually place a garden stone wherever you like; the stricter rules concern burying a body, not marking a spot. If you rent, ask your landlord before burying anything or setting a stone in concrete, and choose a stone you can lift and take with you. Below are the burial and scattering notes we have for Texas.
The official Texas local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in West.
Start with the Texas rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat West's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.
A step-by-step plan for your situation
- Mark the spot simply for now. While the soil is still sinking and the words aren't settled, something temporary, like a paver, a pot or a circle of pebbles, is enough to show where your pet rests.
- Decide where the stone will live long term: your garden, a pet cemetery, a planter or somewhere that can move with you.
- Choose the material for your climate. Where winters bite and summers scorch, granite holds up; in gentler, drier places slate or a river rock does fine.
- Write the wording and count the letters. On most small stones there's room for a name, the years and a single brief line; the memorial stone planner will tell you whether yours fits.
- Ask two or three makers for written quotes and make sure each total covers the engraving, a photo if you want one, shipping and installation.
- Approve a proof before anything is cut. Have a second person at home read every letter of it.
- Set the stone on compacted gravel so it drains and stays level, and add a plant beside it if you like.
Small rituals that keep the stone meaningful
Jewelry can carry more than ashes. Some engravers can reproduce a pet's nose print or paw print on a pendant, using an ink impression or a clear photo. Request a paw or nose print from whoever is caring for your pet before cremation if you think you might want one later. It is easy to do at the time and impossible afterward.

Questions people ask
Is West big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 970 West households keep a dog or cat and around 80 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 2,629), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
Where are the providers that serve West actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Grand Prairie, about 61 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for West and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Does the West climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In August, with highs near 97°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
How do Texas attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Texas human cremation rate at about 55.7%[5]. We show it on the West page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
How do I set a memorial stone so it stays level?
Dig a shallow bed slightly larger than the stone, add 2 to 4 inches of gravel, tamp it firm and level it with a board and a spirit level. Settle the stone on top and check again. For a lawn, set it flush with the grass so a mower can pass over. Heavy upright stones need a proper footing.
Can I engrave a rock from my own garden or land?
Often, yes. Many monument companies will engrave a customer's own stone if its face is dense and smooth enough to hold lettering. Soft, crumbly or heavily layered rock won't take fine letters well. Take a photo and measurements to the engraver first, and ask whether they need the stone brought in or can work on site.
