Weather, drainage and the stone's first hard winter
Frost and water do more damage than time. Water that sits in shallow lettering freezes, expands and chips the edges; sprinklers loaded with iron leave rust-colored streaks on pale stone. Dense granite shrugs off most of this, while soft sandstone and some slates can flake within a few winters in cold climates.
