Using the planner
How to build your memorial budget
The planner lists the costs families most often face: euthanasia at the clinic or at home, private cremation, pickup, an urn, a memorial stone, jewelry, a paw print, a small service and a tree. Private cremation and an urn start ticked; tick or untick the rest to match your plan. There's no burial line, so if you're burying, untick cremation and type the burial quote into a line you aren't using. Each comes with a default low and high amount you can overwrite with a real quote, and the running total updates as you go.
Work from what's already fixed. If the vet bill and cremation are paid, enter them as they were; then use the remaining items to see how much room is left for the stone. When you're done, copy or print the summary to share with family or to bring to a maker.

Where the numbers come from
The default amounts, and their sources
Where a national study exists, the defaults use it. In-clinic dog euthanasia averages $139[3] and an at-home visit $410[4], per CareCredit's 2025 study. Private dog cremation averages $260[5], and the cremation line starts at the $206 to $473 range around it. The stone line starts at a typical $50 to $400, so replace it with the seller prices below.
| Item | Low | High | What moves the price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engraved garden stone or river rock | $38[6] | $115 | Size, carved vs printed letters |
| Flat granite marker | $157.95[7] | Varies by size | Colour, thickness, lettering length |
| Photo-etched granite marker | $159.99[8] | Varies by size | Stone size, background removal |
| Stone with ashes compartment | Ask the maker | Ask the maker | Cavity size, seal type |
| Freight delivery for heavy stone | Ask the seller | Ask the seller | Weight, distance, curbside or not |
| Professional setting | $130 at one cemetery[9] | Ask the cemetery | Cemetery rules, upright vs flat |
These stone figures are published prices from individual sellers, not averages from a study, and where no seller lists a price we've left it for you to fill in rather than guess. Your quote is always the real number. Our guide to what a pet headstone costs breaks down engraving, photos and cemetery fees. The services page explains what each stone type includes.
An example
Worked example: two ways to remember Rufus
Rufus was a 40 lb terrier mix, put to sleep at his usual clinic. His family is weighing two plans. For Plan A they type the cemetery burial range over the private cremation line, as there's no burial line, and add the setting fee to the stone line; for Plan B they untick the urn, since the ashes go in the garden.
| Item | Plan A: cemetery | Plan B: cremation and garden stone |
|---|---|---|
| Euthanasia at the clinic | $110-$253[3] | $110-$253 |
| Pet cemetery burial | $659-$1,513[1] | Not needed |
| Private cremation | Not needed | $150-$250 for 31-50 lb[10] |
| Memorial stone | Flat granite from $157.95[7] | Engraved garden stone $38-$115[6] |
| Setting or delivery | $130 setting fee at one cemetery[9] | You set it yourself |
| Approximate total | About $1,057-$2,054 | About $298-$618 |
Neither plan is more loving. Plan A gives a permanent plot the family can visit; Plan B keeps Rufus in the garden and lets him move with them. By our estimate, US cemetery burial for a dog costs about 3.2x[11] the price of private cremation, and that gap usually decides how much is left for the stone. See our pet cemetery marker checklist if Plan A appeals.

Your total
What your total means, and where to trim
The low figure is what a careful, no-extras version costs; the high is what it can reach with premium choices in an expensive area. If the gap is wide, the biggest swing items are usually burial versus cremation, home versus clinic euthanasia, and granite versus a natural rock.
- Set a flat marker yourself instead of paying for setting, if the cemetery allows it.
- Choose grey or black granite rather than imported colours.
- Order a simple stone now and add a photo plaque or bench later.
- Ask a local monument company about offcut granite for a small marker.
Check your pet insurance, too. Most standard policies don't cover aftercare, but some add-ons help: one US wellness add-on reimbursed up to $650[12] toward cremation, burial and keepsakes. Setting a flat marker yourself saves the setting fee; in the US, contact 811 first, since the before-you-dig service is free. Compare your budget with other readers' in the live poll results.

What it can't tell you
Where the planner's totals can miss
Prices vary a lot by region. Home euthanasia in some states averages well over the national figure, and big-city cemeteries can cost several times a rural one; Hartsdale in New York quotes about USD 7,000[13] for a full burial with headstone. The planner can't see your local market, and it doesn't include sales tax, tips or travel. Ask for a written total wherever you buy: the UK competition regulator's provisional findings on vet services found only about half of cremation buyers remembered being given prices. Your local page notes regional differences we know of.
It also can't price feelings. Some families spend more than planned and are glad they did; others find a painted rock from the children means more than granite. Our post on planning a garden marker before ordering helps you work out which matters most to you.

Questions people ask
How much should I budget for a pet memorial stone?
Engraved natural stones cost $38–$115[6] at one US maker, and flat granite grave markers cost from $157.95[7] at one large retailer. Upright granite headstones run $258–$628[14] there (per one large retailer), and bronze-on-granite designs can pass $2,500[15]. Add delivery for heavy granite and a setting fee if a cemetery installs it.
Is it cheaper to bury a pet at home or at a pet cemetery?
Home burial is far cheaper where it's allowed: your main costs are the stone and perhaps a burial container. US pet cemetery burial for a dog ranges from $400-$1,500+[16] by size (according to a pet insurer), before any headstone. The trade-off is permanence, since a cemetery plot stays put if you move.
Does pet insurance pay for a memorial stone?
Rarely. Standard accident and illness policies usually exclude cremation, burial and memorials. A few wellness add-ons or end-of-life benefits reimburse part of aftercare or keepsakes, so check your policy wording for words like "burial", "cremation" or "memorial" before assuming it's excluded.
Can I save the budget summary to share with family?
Yes. The planner lets you copy the summary as text or print it. Nothing is stored on our side, so if you want to keep it, copy it into a note or email it to yourself before closing the page.
