An outdoor memorial for your pet, made for El Paso
By our estimate, about 250,000 households in El Paso have a dog or cat, and roughly 21,000 of those pets are lost each year. Many end up remembered with a stone in a garden bed; here's how to choose one that lasts.

Stone makers, yards and delivery in El Paso
Intense sun and wind are hard on outdoor memorials here. Painted wood fades within a year, so choose granite, sealed ceramic or metal for anything in the yard. Indoors, keepsake boxes, jewelry holding a trace of ash and framed prints last indefinitely and travel easily for families who may move to another base or city. Clay paw impressions should be glazed or kept inside, away from the sun.
El Paso families often honor the dead during Día de los Muertos, building ofrendas with photos, marigolds, candles and favorite foods, and many now include pets. A framed portrait, a small urn, a paw print impression or a keepsake pendant all fit naturally on an altar. If you would like your pet on the ofrenda this November, order engraved items well in advance.
Most large metros have at least one established pet cemetery within driving distance, and each one sets its own marker rules. Some take only flush granite of a fixed size so their mowers can pass; others allow upright headstones for an extra setting fee. If your pet is buried or will be buried in a cemetery near El Paso, get the rules sheet before you order anything.

Our estimate
250,000
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in El Paso
How we calculated this
683,012 ÷ 2.5 = 273,205 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 250,000. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
21,000
El Paso families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
250,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 21,000 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

What local customs suggest for your pet's stone
As cremation has grown to about 55.7%[5] of deaths in Texas, many pet cemeteries have added small plots just for ashes. These usually take a smaller flat marker than a full grave and cost less to open. If a cemetery appeals but a whole plot feels like too much, ask whether it has an ashes section and what size stone it allows there.
The Texas percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for El Paso, not as a count of pets.
El Paso weather and your pet's stone
Hot, dry summers in El Paso mean hard, baked soil for much of the year. If you're burying ashes under a stone, dig and water the spot the evening before to soften it. Stone set on sun-baked clay can shift when the first heavy rain arrives, so a compacted gravel bed is worth the effort even in a dry garden.
Photo stones need a little thought in a sunny place like El Paso. Laser-etched portraits on black granite read best in soft light and can disappear in full midday glare, which is at its fiercest around June. Angle the stone slightly away from the afternoon sun or put it where a shrub throws some shade, and choose a crisp, high-contrast photo.

What drives the price of a pet memorial stone
Material sets the price tier. By our estimate, photo-etched or flat granite markers start at ~$158–$160[6] at two US sellers, roughly four times an entry-level engraved garden stone. Bronze-on-granite headstones run $1,098–$2,598[7] (per one large retailer). For most gardens in El Paso, a flat granite marker gives the best balance of lasting lettering and cost; the table shows the full range.

Where a pet stone can go in Texas
Three sets of rules decide where a pet memorial stone can go in Texas: the public rules on burying a pet, private rules from your homeowners' association, landlord or strata, and the marker rules of any pet cemetery. A stone over buried ashes or in a planter usually raises no issue at all; a whole-body grave and an upright headstone raise the most questions.
City of El Paso Environmental Services publishes El Paso's official guidance. Note that it deals with public collection, not with booking a private cremation. To find your county or city office in Texas, start with the official Texas local government directory.
Start with the Texas rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat El Paso's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.
From first idea to a stone in the ground
- Give yourself time. Nobody is waiting on the stone, and newly turned earth needs several weeks to firm up before it will hold something heavy.
- Talk about the words with your family. Kids tend to come up with the truest lines, and reading a phrase aloud is the quickest test of whether it belongs.
- Decide how permanent it should be. Set on gravel, a stone lifts out if you move; set in concrete, it usually stays.
- Order from a maker who sends a proof, and read it on your phone at arm's length, roughly how it will look from the path.
- Choose an installation day with soft ground and good weather, then scrape out a shallow hollow deep enough to take a 3 to 4 inch layer of gravel.
- Place the stone together. Many families make it a small ceremony, with a story, a favorite toy or a plant.
Making the stone a place to visit
The Franklin Mountains, the Rio Grande bosque and desert trails on the west side are places many El Pasoans shared with their pets. State park land has its own rules on scattering ashes, so check first. If you'd rather have something permanent at home, a desert-willow tree over a bio urn or a slab of local rock engraved with a name suits the landscape.

Questions people ask
Does the El Paso climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In June, with highs near 97°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from El Paso?
Usually yes. Sunland Park is about 8 miles away, Socorro is about 16 miles away and Horizon City is about 18 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Roughly how many pets die in El Paso each year?
Our estimate is around 21,000. It comes from El Paso's population (about 683,012), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 250,000 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
Is cremation common in Texas?
For people, yes: about 55.7%[5] of Texas deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in El Paso follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Should I use a local stonemason or an online engraver in El Paso?
Both work. A local monument company lets you see the stone and lettering in person and may handle delivery and setting, which matters for heavy granite and upright stones. Online makers are often cheaper for small stones and include a few lines of text. Whichever you choose, insist on a written proof before cutting.
Where can I find free support after my pet dies in El Paso?
Several US veterinary schools run free phone lines. The Cornell Pet Loss Support Hotline is staffed by trained veterinary students, and the Tufts Pet Loss Support Helpline is free and volunteer-staffed on weekday evenings. Many local shelters and vet practices also know of support groups nearby.
