Pet Memorial Stones in the United States: what to know
In the United States, local stonemasons who make human headstones are often happy to cut a small pet marker, and online makers ship engraved stones to most addresses. Heavy granite may travel by freight, so delivery can matter as much as the stone price. Our city pages cover local delivery, rules and weather for each community.
In the United States, families remember pets in three main settings: a garden at home, a pet cemetery or memorial park, and indoors beside an urn. Each needs a different stone. Garden stones must handle the weather, cemetery markers must meet the cemetery's rules, and indoor stones can be lighter and more decorative. The local pages cover all three.
We cover 2458 communities in the United States, from New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago to smaller towns. Conditions vary a lot across the United States: summer highs reach about 107°F in Phoenix, while winter lows average -11°F in Fairbanks. In 51% of the the United States communities we cover, average lows drop below freezing for three months or more, which matters for home burial.

How we calculated this
The sum of our per-city estimates for the 2458 communities in the United States on this site: each city's population ÷ national average household size × the national share of households with a pet. Households with several pets count once.

How the United States remembers its dead, and its pets
As cremation has grown to about 55.7%[1] of deaths in the United States, many pet cemeteries have added small plots just for ashes. These usually take a smaller flat marker than a full grave and cost less to open. If a cemetery appeals but a whole plot feels like too much, ask whether it has an ashes section and what size stone it allows there.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) publishes the the United States rate we quote. Read it as the local custom around cremation rather than as pet data.
Budgeting for the stone, lettering and delivery
If you want a picture on the stone, budget for it separately. A laser-etched portrait on a full headstone costs about $500–$800[2] from monument engravers, while small photo-etched granite pet markers from online makers start from $159.99[3]. Ask makers serving the United States for a proof before they etch, and compare total prices including delivery.
Pet memorial stones cover a wide price range in the US, and the material matters more than the size. Engraved garden stones start at ~$39[4] across three US sellers, while flat granite markers start from $157.95[5] and upright granite headstones run $258–$628[6]. The table shows published prices you can use to judge any quote from a maker serving the United States.
| Stone or service | Published price | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Engraved garden stone (entry level) | from $38.95[7] | Cultured-stone markers from $87.95 at the same seller |
| Engraved natural river stone, 6 to 14 in | $38–$115[8] | 1 to 4 lines of text included; about a week to arrive |
| Personalized pet memorial stone (online) | $90–$200[9] | Photo granite markers from $159.99 |
| Flat granite marker | from $157.95[5] | Made to order in 2–4 weeks[10] |
| Upright granite headstone | $258–$628[6] | Needs a level base; consider professional setting |
| Bronze plaque on granite | $1,098–$2,598[11] | Most durable, most expensive |
| Engraving by a monument engraver | $8–$35/char[12] | Or a flat $50–$150/line[13] with some engravers |
| Laser-etched portrait on a headstone | $500–$800[2] | Porcelain photo inserts about $200 to $600 |
| Pet cemetery marker-setting fee (one WA example) | $130[14] | Cemeteries set their own fees and size rules |

Where a pet stone can go in the United States
Before you dig anywhere in the United States, find out where underground cables and pipes run; in the US, calling 811 gets them marked for free. Then check any homeowners' association covenants, since some limit permanent features or anything visible from the street. A small flush stone in a backyard bed rarely breaks any rule.
From first idea to a stone in the ground
- Decide whether each pet gets its own stone or they share one. A row of matching small markers suits a path; one larger stone with several names saves room.
- If you expect to add names later, leave space on purpose. Ask the maker to put the first name on the top line and keep the lower part blank.
- Stay with one maker where you can, and keep a record of the stone type, typeface and letter height so a later inscription matches.
- Ask now what a second inscription will cost and whether the stone has to go back to the workshop or can be cut in place.
- Leave enough room between graves that stones don't crowd each other, and sketch a simple plan showing who rests where.
- Set every stone at the same height on the same gravel base, so the group settles evenly and the mower passes cleanly.
Small rituals that keep the stone meaningful
If your pet rests in a pet cemetery, visiting on anniversaries can become part of your year. Ask the cemetery what you're allowed to leave: many limit decorations, glass and anything that gets in the way of mowing. A small potted plant you take home again is usually welcome, and it gives you something to tend.

Questions people ask
Which stone lasts longest outdoors in the United States?
Granite, almost everywhere. It barely absorbs water, so it survives freeze-thaw, and carved lettering doesn't fade in sun. Slate and river rock last well in mild, dry places; sandstone, concrete and cast resin are the most likely to crack, soften or fade. Deep sandblasted lettering matters as much as the stone.
How many dog- and cat-owning households are there in the United States?
By our estimate, about 63,790,000 households across the United States communities we cover have a dog or cat. That's the sum of our per-city estimates, based on population, household size and national ownership rates. It gives a sense of how many families will one day face the same memorial choices.
How do heavy granite stones get delivered to rural parts of the United States?
Large granite pieces tend to go by truck freight, and the driver may leave them at the roadside or ask you to collect from a depot. Before paying, ask who unloads it, how far it will be carried and who pays if a corner is chipped in transit. Some local monument makers deliver and set stones on their regular runs.
Can I bury a pet's ashes under a stone in the United States?
In most places, burying ashes in your own garden raises far fewer questions than burying a body, because cremated remains carry no disease risk. Renters should still ask the landlord, and pet cemeteries may offer a separate ashes plot. A stone with a sealed cavity is an alternative that keeps the ashes above ground and portable.
Is a local stonemason or an online maker better in the United States?
It depends on the stone. For heavy granite and upright headstones, a local monument company that delivers and sets the stone is often worth it. For small engraved stones and river rocks, online makers are usually cheaper and include lettering. Whichever you choose, approve a written proof before anything is cut.
When is the best time of year to set a pet memorial stone in the United States?
Late spring and early fall are easiest in most places: the ground is soft enough to dig and the weather is comfortable. In freezing areas, wait until the ground thaws. A fresh grave also needs a month or two to settle before a heavy stone goes on it, so a temporary marker is a good first step.
