Simple and personal
Engraved garden stones and river rocks
These are the most popular choice for cats, rabbits, guinea pigs and small dogs, or for anyone who wants a memorial that looks like part of the garden rather than a grave. Makers either carve a natural river rock or engrave a cut stone with a rustic face. Each natural rock is different, so the exact shape and colour you get may vary from the photo.
Ask whether the lettering is carved or printed and sealed. Carved letters outlast the coating; printed designs look bright on delivery but can fade in two or three summers of full sun. The long-lasting option
Flat granite grave markers for backyard and cemetery graves
A flat granite marker, usually 12 x 6 inches up to 16 x 8 inches and 2 to 3 inches thick, is the workhorse of pet memorials. Set flush with the lawn, it survives frost, mowers and decades of rain. Grey and black are the cheapest colours; red, pink and blue-pearl granites usually cost more because the stone is imported. Owners burying at home have plenty of company, on both sides of the Atlantic. Most of those graves are in lawns, which is why flush granite is so common. Plan the lettering before ordering with the memorial stone planner. In England, the government's guidance on animal burials says dogs, cats and other small pets can be buried on your own land without permission.

Upright pet headstones and what cemeteries allow
An upright headstone stands on a granite base and looks much like a small human memorial. It's the traditional choice at pet cemeteries that permit raised markers, and for large dogs or horses buried on family land. It needs a concrete or compacted gravel foundation so it doesn't lean, and it's the only option here where professional setting is almost always worth paying for. Cemetery costs dwarf the stone itself. US pet cemetery burial runs from $400-$1,500+[12] depending on size (according to a pet insurer), and a full burial with headstone at Hartsdale, America's oldest pet cemetery, costs about USD 7,000[1]. Laser-etched photo stones
Photo stones use a laser to lighten the polished surface of black granite, producing a grey-scale portrait that can capture whiskers and the look in your pet's eyes. They're the most requested upgrade and the one that depends most on you: the maker can only work with the picture you send.

- Choose a picture taken in daylight with your pet looking toward the camera
- Pale pets on pale backgrounds, and dark pets on dark ones, lose their outline; ask for background removal

Memorial stones that hold ashes
These stones have a hollow underside sealed with a plug, or a cavity behind a screwed plate. They suit families who want the ashes outdoors without burying them loose, and anyone who may move house: lift the stone and your pet comes with you. Capacity varies widely, from a keepsake portion to enough for a large dog, so compare it with the volume from our urn size calculator before you order.
Look for a gasket or silicone seal and a cavity that sits above soil level, or ask for a waterproof inner bag. Ashes that get wet clump and can stain the stone from inside.

Slate plaques and memorial benches
Slate plaques are thin, dark and elegant, and they're lovely mounted on a wall, fixed to a fence or propped on a patio. Questions people ask
What size grave marker do I need for a dog?
For most dogs, a flat marker between 12 x 6 and 16 x 8 inches looks proportionate over the grave and has room for a name, dates and a short line. Giant breeds and pet cemetery plots may suit 18 x 10 inches or an upright stone. Check any cemetery size limits first.
Is a flat marker or an upright headstone better for a pet?
Flat markers are cheaper, easier to set yourself and simple to mow around, and they're the only type many pet cemeteries accept. Upright headstones are easier to read from a distance and feel more formal, but they need a proper base and cost roughly three times as much.
Do I have to pay to have a stone installed?
For a small garden stone or flat marker, no; most owners set it themselves in an hour with a spade, gravel and sand. Upright headstones and anything at a pet cemetery are usually set by the cemetery or maker, and fees vary: one public cemetery charges $130 to set a marker[15]. Ask for setting to be listed separately on the quote.
Can I order a memorial bench with my pet's name on it?
Yes. Most benches take an engraved plaque on the backrest or a carved panel on the seat for stone benches. Plaques are cheaper and can be swapped if you ever add another pet's name. Ask the maker for a written lead time, and plan a level, firm spot because stone benches can weigh several hundred pounds.
Why do stone prices vary so much between makers?
The biggest differences come from the granite colour and origin, the thickness, whether engraving is sandblasted or laser-etched, and shipping weight. A quote that looks cheap may exclude delivery, the proof, paint fill or a stand. Compare written totals, not headline prices.
