Local makers and practical limits in Fort Worth
Many Fort Worth families keep a pet's ashes at home in a wooden or ceramic urn, often with a collar and photo on a bookshelf or mantel. Those with a backyard sometimes add a memorial stone under a live oak or in a flower bed, where the shade makes it a place to sit on summer evenings. Paw prints in clay or ink are easy to take before collection, so ask at the first call.
If you are thinking of scattering ashes, many Fort Worth owners think of a family ranch, a lake such as Eagle Mountain or Benbrook, or a favorite stretch of the Trinity. On private land, ask the owner first. Public parks and lakes are shared spaces, so choose a quiet moment. A bio urn planted with a native tree, such as a cedar elm, suits the North Texas landscape.
One advantage of a large metro is that you can often see a stone that has aged. Ask engravers in Fort Worth whether they have a pet marker or sample that has sat outdoors for several years. Lettering depth, how the paint fill has weathered and how the polish has held up tell you more than any catalog photo.
Fort Worth is home to about 1,028,117 people, the 4th-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover.
Fort Worth sits within easy reach of River Oaks (4 miles), Westover Hills (5 miles) and Haltom City (6 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Fort Worth; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.
Our estimate
380,000
Fort Worth: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
1,028,117 ÷ 2.5 = 411,247 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 380,000. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
31,500
Fort Worth families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
380,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 31,500 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

Grave or ashes? The local habit in Texas
As cremation has grown to about 55.7%[5] of deaths in Texas, many pet cemeteries have added small plots just for ashes. These usually take a smaller flat marker than a full grave and cost less to open. If a cemetery appeals but a whole plot feels like too much, ask whether it has an ashes section and what size stone it allows there.
That Texas rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Fort Worth only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Which stones survive the weather in Fort Worth
Fort Worth summers are hard on outdoor memorials: August averages highs around 96°F. Strong sun bleaches cast resin, fades painted lettering and dries out the sealant around ashes compartments. Granite and natural stone with carved letters are the safe choice. Painted fill in the letters will need touching up every few years; carved depth won't.
Plan installation around the heat. Setting a stone in Fort Worth means digging, leveling and tamping gravel, which is heavy work when August highs sit near 96°F. An early morning in spring or fall is easier, and the ground is often softer then. There's no rush: a temporary marker holds the spot perfectly well through summer.

What a pet memorial stone costs in Fort Worth
Lead times vary more than prices. Natural engraved stones from one US maker arrive in ~1 week[6], made-to-order granite and bronze markers take 2–4 weeks[7], and a new full-size headstone from a monument company can take 6–12 weeks[8]. If you want the stone in place for an anniversary in Fort Worth, order well ahead.

Burial, HOA and cemetery rules in Texas
Public land is where most families run into limits. Parks, beaches and trails almost never allow a personal stone, and scattering ashes there may need permission or be restricted. The usual answer is to scatter or remember your pet at a public spot, then set the stone somewhere private. What we know for Texas is below.
Fort Worth's own guidance is published by City of Fort Worth; it covers public collection, which is separate from arranging a private cremation. Not sure which office covers Fort Worth? The Texas local government directory is the official list.
We keep Texas's burial and scattering rules in one place: the Texas rules summary. Before a home burial in Fort Worth, also ask the city whether local ordinances add anything.
From first idea to a stone in the ground
- Photograph the spot now. A picture of the grave or garden bed helps any maker suggest a size that suits it.
- Set a rough budget. Include the stone, lettering, delivery and any cemetery setting fee; our memorial budget planner adds it up.
- Choose the material. Match it to your winters and summers rather than the catalog photo.
- Draft two or three wording options and sleep on them for a few days, then go with the one that hasn't worn thin.
- Send the details for quotes. Size, material, wording, photo and delivery address are all a maker needs.
- Approve the proof and arrange delivery, and bed the marker on gravel that drains, which keeps it from tilting over the years.
Small rituals that keep the stone meaningful
Texans have a strong sense of place, and Fort Worth families often want a memorial that reflects it: a leather-tooled keepsake box, a memorial stone with a star, or a photo from the Stockyards on a weekend. Pet jewelry holding a small portion of ashes is also popular. Choose what feels like your pet rather than what a catalog suggests.

Questions people ask
How many pet owners live in Fort Worth?
By our estimate, about 380,000 households in Fort Worth have at least one dog or cat, and around 31,500 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 1,028,117, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Fort Worth?
Usually yes. River Oaks is about 4 miles away, Westover Hills is about 5 miles away and Haltom City is about 6 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How do Texas attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Texas human cremation rate at about 55.7%[5]. We show it on the Fort Worth page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Fort Worth?
There is no frozen-ground season here; average lows stay above freezing all year. The other pressure point is August, when highs around 96°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
How do I remove hard-water spots from a granite pet stone in Fort Worth?
White spots usually come from sprinklers or hose spray drying in the sun. Rinse them with clean water, then dry the stone with a microfiber towel. For stubborn marks, a pH-neutral stone cleaner is safe on polished granite. Avoid vinegar, lemon juice and abrasive pads, and aim sprinklers away from the stone so the spots don't return.
How much does a pet memorial stone cost in Fort Worth?
Published US prices give a good guide. Engraved garden stones start at ~$39[10], natural engraved river stones run $38–$115[11], flat granite markers start from $157.95[12] and upright granite headstones cost $258–$628[13] (per one large retailer). Delivery, a photo and cemetery setting fees are extra, so ask Fort Worth makers for a written total.
