Katy, Texas
Local makers and practical limits in Katy
Old Town Katy still celebrates its rice-growing roots each fall, and the small historic center feels very different from the new subdivisions around it. Memorials here range just as widely: a rustic wooden box or a stone set among roses on an older lot, or a sleek ceramic urn and framed print in a new build. Start with the room or garden where it will live, then pick the form.
Katy's clay soils, frequent downpours and summer heat test anything placed outdoors. A granite or cast-stone marker bedded on crushed gravel resists heaving and settling, while resin and painted wood deteriorate within a few years. If your street has taken on water before, keep the ashes themselves somewhere high inside, and let an outdoor stone or a flowering plant serve as the everyday reminder of your pet.
Rural water is worth thinking about. If your home draws from a private well, keep any grave well away from it and downhill if possible; your state or regional rules set the minimum distance. The stone itself poses no risk to water, but the site you choose for it usually marks where your pet is buried.
Katy's population is around 28,373, the 115th-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Houston, about 27 miles (44 km) away, which is where some providers serving Katy are based.
For a second opinion on price, Brookshire (8 miles), Fulshear (8 miles, a larger centre) and Richmond (15 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Katy routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.
Our estimate
10,500
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Katy
How we calculated this
28,373 ÷ 2.5 = 11,349 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 10,500. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
870
Katy families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
10,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 870 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

Local traditions and what they mean for a pet stone
In Texas, where about 55.7%[5] of people are cremated, families are split fairly evenly between the two traditions, and pet owners are too. Whichever you choose, the stone question is much the same: will it sit over a body or over ashes, will it stay or travel with you, and does it need to meet a cemetery's rules?

Katy weather and your pet's stone
Weather decides how a stone ages more than price does. Porous stone soaks up water; if that water freezes, the surface flakes. Strong sun fades paint and resin. Constant damp grows moss. Whatever the conditions around Katy, dense granite with deep sandblasted letters is the most forgiving choice.

How much to budget for a pet stone
In Katy, as anywhere in the US, the engraving can cost as much as the stone. Monument engravers who charge by the letter typically ask $8–$35/char[6], and a standard 40 to 60 character inscription can total $500 to $1,200 at those rates[6]. Small online pet stones usually include a few lines of text in the price, which is why they look so much cheaper.

Home burial, rentals and pet cemeteries in Texas
Pet cemeteries in Texas each set their own marker rules: size, material, whether upright stones are allowed and who installs them. Human cemeteries generally don't accept pets. If you plan a cemetery stone, get the rules sheet first. For a home memorial, here's what we know about burial and scattering locally.

What to do first, and what can wait
- Work out what the stone is marking: a grave, buried ashes, a scattering spot or simply a place your pet loved.
- If ashes will go inside the stone, run the cavity's dimensions through our urn size calculator to be sure everything will fit.
- Choose dense stone and carved lettering. Painted or printed designs look bright on day one but fade outdoors.
- Keep the wording short. Most small stones fit two or three lines of 14 to 16 capital letters.
- Get written quotes from makers who serve your area, and ask what happens if the stone arrives damaged.
- Sign off the proof, and think about placement: a bed of gravel underneath, a spirit level on top, and enough distance from trees that roots won't tilt it.
Remembering your pet beside the stone
Many Katy families moved here for schools and may relocate later, so think about how a memorial will travel. Keepsake urns sized for a mantel, a wearable locket with a pinch of ash, or a set of small urns so each child or grandparent keeps a share are all options. A planted tree is lovely, but it belongs to the house once you leave.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to Houston to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Houston (roughly 27 miles from Katy) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Is Katy big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 10,500 Katy households keep a dog or cat and around 870 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 28,373), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
Why does the Katy page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 55.7%[5] of Texas residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Katy?
Usually yes. Brookshire is about 8 miles away, Fulshear is about 8 miles away and Richmond is about 15 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Can a memorial stone hold my pet's ashes?
Yes. Some stones have a hollow underside sealed with a plug, or a cavity behind a screwed plate. Check the stated capacity: ashes typically weigh about 3-5% of body weight[8], so a large dog may need more space than most garden stones offer. A waterproof inner bag protects the ashes from damp.
Can I engrave a rock from my own garden or land?
Often, yes. Many monument companies will engrave a customer's own stone if its face is dense and smooth enough to hold lettering. Soft, crumbly or heavily layered rock won't take fine letters well. Take a photo and measurements to the engraver first, and ask whether they need the stone brought in or can work on site.
