Where a stone can go in Ottawa
If you are thinking of scattering ashes, many Ottawa owners think of the Ottawa River, the Rideau Canal or the lookouts in Gatineau Park. These are shared public spaces, busy with skaters, cyclists and hikers depending on the season, so choose a quiet early morning. A keepsake or jewellery holding a small portion is a gentler alternative that stays with you through every winter.
Many Ottawa families keep a pet's ashes at home in an urn through the winter, often with a collar and photo, and decide on a lasting memorial once the snow melts. Those with a yard may then add a memorial stone or plant a shrub. Paw prints in clay or ink are easy to take before collection, and a print from snowy paws is not what you want, so ask at the first call.
Delivery is the practical snag in a dense city. A 16 x 8 inch granite marker weighs close to 40 lb, and heavier pieces usually travel by freight, which may mean curbside drop-off only. If you're up several flights of stairs in Ottawa, ask whether the carrier will bring it inside, or choose a lighter river rock or slate plaque that a parcel service can handle.
About 1,017,000 people live in Ottawa, which makes it the 2nd-largest of the 15 Ontario communities we cover.
Ottawa sits within easy reach of Kingston (91 miles), Laval (97 miles) and Montreal (103 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Ottawa; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.

Local traditions and what they mean for a pet stone
In places where cremation is as common as it is in Canada, where about 81.1%[1] of people are cremated, ashes give families more freedom. A stone doesn't have to sit over a grave. It can mark a scattering spot, hold a portion of ashes in a cavity or stand in a patio planter, and it can move with you when you do.
The Canada figure comes from CANA Industry Statistical Information (2030). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Frost, sun and damp: matching stone to Ottawa
Weather decides how a stone ages more than price does. Porous stone soaks up water; if that water freezes, the surface flakes. Strong sun fades paint and resin. Constant damp grows moss. Whatever the conditions around Ottawa, dense granite with deep sandblasted letters is the most forgiving choice.

What drives the price of a pet memorial stone
Canadian winters make material the first cost question in Ottawa. Granite costs more than slate or cast stone up front but survives decades of freeze-thaw; a cheaper stone that cracks after three winters costs more in the end. The US prices below are the closest published guide; ask local makers for a written total in CAD.

Where a pet stone can go in Ontario
Public land is where most families run into limits. Parks, beaches and trails almost never allow a personal stone, and scattering ashes there may need permission or be restricted. The usual answer is to scatter or remember your pet at a public spot, then set the stone somewhere private. What we know for Ontario is below.
Ottawa's own guidance is published by City of Ottawa; it covers public collection, which is separate from arranging a private cremation.
Canadian winters are the main thing to plan for. Across most of the country, water in porous stone freezes and thaws many times each year, so dense granite set on a gravel base is the safe outdoor choice. Frozen ground can make winter installation impossible; keeping the stone indoors until spring is normal. Rules on home burial are set by provinces and municipalities, so check locally before digging.
The Ontario page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Ottawa's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
How to choose, order and set a pet stone
- Decide how much of the ashes belongs with the stone: all of them sealed inside, a small portion buried beneath, or none, with the stone simply marking a place your pet loved.
- If the stone will hold ashes, ask the maker for the cavity's volume and set it against the size of the bag or box that came back from the crematory. Our urn size calculator gives a rough figure for how much room the ashes take.
- Keep the ashes in a sealed waterproof pouch rather than pouring them straight into the stone; unbagged, they absorb damp and set into lumps.
- Place the stone as soon as it arrives if you like. With no grave to settle, many families time it for a birthday or the first warm weekend.
- Pick a spot that stays yours, a corner of the patio or a big pot, for instance, if moving house is a possibility.
- Write down what's inside the stone and file the note with your important documents, so a future owner or relative doesn't treat it as decoration.
Around the stone: plants, benches and small rituals
Ottawa's seasons shape memorials: many families wait until the ground thaws to plant a tree or place a stone, and some choose tulip bulbs, a nod to the flowers that fill the city's parks each May. A bio urn planted with a native maple or serviceberry is another option. Keeping a small portion of ashes in a keepsake first is wise if you might move.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Ottawa?
The closest communities we cover are Kingston (about 91 miles), Laval (about 97 miles) and Montreal (about 103 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Ottawa too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
How do Canada attitudes to cremation compare?
CANA Industry Statistical Information (2030) puts the Canada human cremation rate at about 81.1%[1]. We show it on the Ottawa page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
How many words fit on a small pet memorial stone?
Less than most people expect. As a rough guide, a 12-inch-wide stone with 1-inch capital letters fits about 14 to 16 characters per line once margins are allowed for, and most small stones take two to four lines. A name, the years and one short line is the classic layout. Our memorial stone planner previews it for you.
How heavy is a granite pet grave marker?
Granite weighs roughly 165 to 170 lb per cubic foot, so a 12 x 6 inch marker 2 inches thick weighs about 14 lb, and a 16 x 8 inch marker 3 inches thick is close to 40 lb. Upright headstones with a base can weigh well over 100 lb. Heavier pieces usually ship by freight and may be delivered to the curb only.
What do people usually engrave on a pet memorial stone?
Most choose the pet's name and years, plus one short line: a nickname, a place they loved or a phrase the family always said. A paw print or small outline is a popular alternative to words. Read the wording out loud, check the spelling with someone else and keep it short enough to read from the path.
What size stone suits a cat's grave compared with a dog's?
A cat's grave is small, so a flat stone around 12 by 6 inches, or an engraved river rock, marks it well. A medium or large dog's grave is longer, and many families choose a 16 by 8 inch marker or bigger, set at the head end. Our memorial stone planner helps you check whether the wording fits the size you choose.
