Pet Memorial Stones in Canada

Pet Memorial Stones in Canada: what to know

Renting is common in many parts of Canada, and a memorial that can move is often the wisest choice for renters. An engraved stone set on gravel, a slate plaque on a stand or a hollow stone with an ashes cavity gives you a place to visit without breaking a lease. Our city pages cover local rules where we have them.

In Canada, families remember pets in three main settings: a garden at home, a pet cemetery or memorial park, and indoors beside an urn. Each needs a different stone. Garden stones must handle the weather, cemetery markers must meet the cemetery's rules, and indoor stones can be lighter and more decorative. The local pages cover all three.

We cover 30 communities in Canada, from Toronto, Montreal and Calgary to smaller towns.

Local traditions and what they mean for a pet stone

Scattering is common in Canada, since cremation accounts for roughly 81.1%[1] of human deaths there, and many families scatter a pet's ashes on a beach or a favorite trail. You can't leave a stone there, but you can bring the place home: a pebble from that beach set beside an engraved marker, or the trail's name carved on the stone itself.

We take the Canada percentage from CANA Industry Statistical Information (2030). It refers to people; attitudes to cremating a pet tend to follow it.

Budgeting for the stone, lettering and delivery

Canadian pet memorial stone prices broadly track US ones in Canadian dollars, and we haven't found a Canada-wide survey. The US figures below are a useful yardstick: engraved garden stones start at ~$39[2] and flat granite markers from $157.95[3] (per one large retailer). Ask any maker serving Canada for a written total in CAD, including tax and delivery.

Canadian winters make material the first cost question in Canada. Granite costs more than slate or cast stone up front but survives decades of freeze-thaw; a cheaper stone that cracks after three winters costs more in the end. The US prices below are the closest published guide; ask local makers for a written total in CAD.

What Canada allows for pet graves and markers

Pet cemeteries in Canada each set their own marker rules: size, material, whether upright stones are allowed and who installs them. Human cemeteries generally don't accept pets. If you plan a cemetery stone, get the rules sheet first. For a home memorial, here's what we know about burial and scattering locally.

Canadian winters are the main thing to plan for. Across most of the country, water in porous stone freezes and thaws many times each year, so dense granite set on a gravel base is the safe outdoor choice. Frozen ground can make winter installation impossible; keeping the stone indoors until spring is normal. Rules on home burial are set by provinces and municipalities, so check locally before digging.

From first idea to a stone in the ground

  1. Decide whether the stone should travel with you. If you rent, or a move is on the horizon, keep it light enough to carry to the next house.
  2. Pick a spot you'll see every day, somewhere in view from the kitchen window or the step, not tucked away where you seldom go.
  3. Keep it clear of pipes and roots. Check for underground lines before digging and leave space from any tree trunk.
  4. Order a stone rated for outdoor use in your climate, with sandblasted lettering at least an eighth of an inch deep.
  5. Check the proof carefully. Names, dates and punctuation can't be changed once the stone is cut.
  6. Install it, then look after it lightly: a soft brush and plain water once or twice a year is plenty.

Remembering your pet beside the stone

Grief after a pet can hit harder than people around you expect. In the RSPCA's survey of bereaved owners, 66.9%[15] said they were surprised by how intense it was. If sitting by the stone brings more pain than comfort for now, that's normal too. Free lines such as the Cornell Pet Loss Support Hotline are staffed by people who understand.

If Canada is not quite where you are, all locations has the rest. Otherwise the services page, the tools and the poll results are the useful next stops.

Questions people ask

How do heavy granite stones get delivered to rural parts of Canada?

Large granite pieces tend to go by truck freight, and the driver may leave them at the roadside or ask you to collect from a depot. Before paying, ask who unloads it, how far it will be carried and who pays if a corner is chipped in transit. Some local monument makers deliver and set stones on their regular runs.

Can I bury a pet's ashes under a stone in Canada?

In most places, burying ashes in your own garden raises far fewer questions than burying a body, because cremated remains carry no disease risk. Renters should still ask the landlord, and pet cemeteries may offer a separate ashes plot. A stone with a sealed cavity is an alternative that keeps the ashes above ground and portable.

Can I place a memorial stone for my pet in a public park in Canada?

Generally no. Public land managers rarely permit private markers, and some also restrict scattering without the landowner's or local authority's consent. Some councils and parks departments offer memorial benches or trees with a dedication plaque. Most families remember the park in the stone's wording and set the stone itself at home.

How many communities do you cover in Canada?

We currently have local pet memorial stone guides for 30 communities in Canada, including Toronto, Montreal and Calgary. Each page covers local weather, which stones suit it, published prices, burial and cemetery notes, and how delivery usually works there.

Which stone lasts longest outdoors in Canada?

Granite, almost everywhere. It barely absorbs water, so it survives freeze-thaw, and carved lettering doesn't fade in sun. Slate and river rock last well in mild, dry places; sandstone, concrete and cast resin are the most likely to crack, soften or fade. Deep sandblasted lettering matters as much as the stone.

How much does a pet memorial stone cost in Canada?

We haven't found a reliable local price survey, so compare two or three written quotes from local stonemasons and online makers. For scale, US sellers list engraved garden stones from ~$39[2] and flat granite markers from $157.95[3]. Freight on heavy granite can add a lot.
