What getting a pet stone made in London is like
London's reputation as the Forest City makes tree memorials a natural choice. A biodegradable urn under a young maple or oak, or a memorial shrub in the garden, fits a city known for its canopy. Renters can plant in a large pot and take the memorial with them. A winter loss simply means waiting to plant until the April thaw, with the ashes kept safe indoors.
The Thames River runs through the heart of London, and many families connect their pets' memory with Springbank Park and the riverside paths. Scattering near moving water works most gently from the bank on a calm day, and some families keep a small amount at home too. Check city park rules, and ask permission before using private land. Autumn, when the city's trees turn, is a popular time for a small ceremony.
Pet cemeteries serving mid-size cities are often a drive away, sometimes in the next county. If your pet is resting in one, the cemetery will usually tell you which marker sizes and materials it accepts and whether its own staff must set the stone. Get that in writing before you order, because a stone the cemetery rejects is hard to return.
About 422,000 people live in London, which makes it the 6th-largest of the 15 Ontario communities we cover. Hamilton, roughly 72 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover London run from there.
Our pages for Guelph (63 miles), Hamilton (72 miles) and Burlington (77 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers London as well.

How Canada remembers its dead, and its pets
In Canada, cremation is chosen for roughly 81.1%[1] of the people who die, and families often divide a pet's ashes: some in an urn, some for a grown child, some for the garden. Each household may then want its own marker. A set of small matching stones from one maker, each with the same name and dates, keeps the family connected across different homes.
That Canada rate is a human one, published by CANA Industry Statistical Information (2030). We quote it for London only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
London weather and your pet's stone
Before you set a stone, watch the spot for a week at different times of day. A place in deep shade stays damp and grows moss; one in full afternoon sun makes a photo etching hard to read and heats dark granite. A spot with morning sun and afternoon shade suits most stones and most visits.

Stone, engraving and setting: the real prices
In London, the heavy freight on granite can be the surprise. Many online stones ship from the US, so check whether the price includes cross-border shipping, duties and GST or HST before you order. A local monument company may cost more for the stone but less once delivery is added, and you can check the proof in person.

Home burial, rentals and pet cemeteries in Ontario
Pet cemeteries in Ontario each set their own marker rules: size, material, whether upright stones are allowed and who installs them. Human cemeteries generally don't accept pets. If you plan a cemetery stone, get the rules sheet first. For a home memorial, here's what we know about burial and scattering locally.
Canadian winters are the main thing to plan for. Across most of the country, water in porous stone freezes and thaws many times each year, so dense granite set on a gravel base is the safe outdoor choice. Frozen ground can make winter installation impossible; keeping the stone indoors until spring is normal. Rules on home burial are set by provinces and municipalities, so check locally before digging.
We keep Ontario's burial and scattering rules in one place: the Ontario rules summary. Before a home burial in London, also ask the city whether local ordinances add anything.
A simple plan for your pet's memorial stone
- Note exactly where the grave is today. Count the steps from two things that won't move, like a post and the porch step, and photograph it before raking evens out the ground.
- Cover the fresh soil with something heavy and flat, a slab or an overturned pot will do, to stop anything from digging there while the ground firms.
- Leave the permanent stone for a few weeks. In the first days everything seems to need deciding at once; this decision keeps until you've had some proper rest.
- Top up the soil as it sinks. A new grave often drops a few inches; add soil, firm it with your foot and wait for it to stop moving.
- Measure the settled patch and choose a stone wide enough to cover most of it, which also discourages anything from digging there later.
- Set the finished stone on gravel over the firmed ground, and once a good downpour has been through, put a level on it a second time.
Around the stone: plants, benches and small rituals
Canada has a high cremation rate, and in London keeping ashes at home feels natural to many families. For a pet, that could be a carved wooden box, a glass keepsake, a paw print in clay, or a necklace holding a few ashes. Freeze-thaw cycles crack cheap outdoor markers, so if you choose one for the garden, granite or slate is worth the extra cost.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with London?
The closest communities we cover are Guelph (about 63 miles), Hamilton (about 72 miles) and Burlington (about 77 miles). Providers based in those places often serve London too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Is cremation common in Canada?
For people, yes: about 81.1%[1] of Canada deaths end in cremation, according to CANA Industry Statistical Information (2030). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in London follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Will I have to travel to Hamilton to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Hamilton (roughly 72 miles from London) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Are there pet cemeteries near London that accept memorial stones?
Most pet cemeteries allow some kind of marker, but each sets its own rules on size, material and whether upright stones are permitted, and many charge a setting fee. Ask the cemetery for its written rules before ordering. Our pet cemetery marker checklist lists the questions worth asking.
Can I put a pet memorial stone in a rented garden?
Usually yes, as long as it isn't fixed in concrete and you don't bury a body without the landlord's agreement. The simplest approach for renters is a stone you can lift: set on gravel, a garden stone or engraved rock comes out in minutes. A stone with a sealed ashes compartment lets your pet move with you.
Is it too late to get a stone for a pet who died years ago?
Not at all. Many families order a stone months or years later, once they know where they'll settle or when the grief has softened enough to choose words. If you're not sure exactly where your pet was buried, a stone can mark the general area or a spot in the garden they loved.
