Pet Memorial Stones in Ontario: what to know
Monument companies, the businesses that make human headstones, are spread across Ontario, and many will take on a small pet marker. They're often the best source for heavy granite and upright stones because they deliver and set them. For smaller engraved stones, online makers ship almost anywhere in Ontario, often with lettering included.
Across the 15 communities we cover in Ontario, from Toronto, Ottawa and Mississauga to smaller towns, the questions families ask are remarkably similar: which stone will last, what engraving costs, whether they can bury their pet at home, and what happens to the memorial if they move. Each city page answers those with local detail.

How local customs shape pet memorials
Scattering is common in Ontario, since cremation accounts for roughly 81.1%[1] of human deaths there, and many families scatter a pet's ashes on a beach or a favorite trail. You can't leave a stone there, but you can bring the place home: a pebble from that beach set beside an engraved marker, or the trail's name carved on the stone itself.
CANA Industry Statistical Information (2030) publishes the Ontario rate we quote. Read it as the local custom around cremation rather than as pet data.
Pet memorial stone prices for families in Ontario
Timing affects cost in Canada as much as price lists do. Ordering in winter gives a maker serving Ontario time to produce the stone and send a proof, and you avoid paying extra to rush it for a spring anniversary. One US stone maker's engraved natural pet memorials run $38–$115[2], which gives a sense of scale; ask local makers for a total in CAD.
Canadian crematories often sell stone memorials alongside urns. One British Columbia crematory lists slate paw urns at CA$99 to CA$140[3], which gives a feel for small stone keepsakes. For a proper outdoor marker in Ontario, compare that with a granite marker from a monument company, and ask whether the stone is rated for your winters.

Burial, HOA and cemetery rules in Ontario
Pet cemeteries in Ontario each set their own marker rules: size, material, whether upright stones are allowed and who installs them. Human cemeteries generally don't accept pets. If you plan a cemetery stone, get the rules sheet first. For a home memorial, here's what we know about burial and scattering locally.
Canadian winters are the main thing to plan for. Across most of the country, water in porous stone freezes and thaws many times each year, so dense granite set on a gravel base is the safe outdoor choice. Frozen ground can make winter installation impossible; keeping the stone indoors until spring is normal. Rules on home burial are set by provinces and municipalities, so check locally before digging.
- Burial at home: Confirm the rule for the actual parcel and proposed burial with the local authority and property owner.
- Scattering ashes: Ask the exact land manager about scattering before making arrangements; a general gathering permission is a separate matter.
- Who oversees it: the authority responsible for the specific activity and location; this guide does not identify a universal permit or licensing rule
- Worth knowing: Record the service method, release authority, identification and return instructions in writing.
A city's population does not establish which aftercare activities are allowed at an address. Check the actual site and activity before proceeding.
A step-by-step plan for your situation
- Work out what the stone is marking: a grave, buried ashes, a scattering spot or simply a place your pet loved.
- If ashes will go inside the stone, check the cavity size against your pet's ashes with our urn size calculator.
- Choose dense stone and carved lettering. Painted or printed designs look bright on day one but fade outdoors.
- Keep the wording short. Most small stones fit two or three lines of 14 to 16 capital letters.
- Get written quotes from makers who serve your area, and ask what happens if the stone arrives damaged.
- Sign off the proof, and think about placement: a bed of gravel underneath, a spirit level on top, and enough distance from trees that roots won't tilt it.
Remembering your pet beside the stone
A paper rubbing of the lettering makes a lovely keepsake for relatives who live far away. Lay thin paper over the carved name, hold it still and rub gently with the side of a wax crayon. Photographing the stone in each season does something similar: a year of pictures shows the spot settling into the garden, and it gives children a gentle way to look back.

Questions people ask
How much does a pet memorial stone cost in Ontario?
We haven't found a reliable local price survey, so compare two or three written quotes from local stonemasons and online makers. For scale, US sellers list engraved garden stones from ~$39[15] and flat granite markers from $157.95[6]. Freight on heavy granite can add a lot.
Can I bury a pet's ashes under a stone in Ontario?
In most places, burying ashes in your own garden raises far fewer questions than burying a body, because cremated remains carry no disease risk. Renters should still ask the landlord, and pet cemeteries may offer a separate ashes plot. A stone with a sealed cavity is an alternative that keeps the ashes above ground and portable.
When is the best time of year to set a pet memorial stone in Ontario?
Late spring and early fall are easiest in most places: the ground is soft enough to dig and the weather is comfortable. In freezing areas, wait until the ground thaws. A fresh grave also needs a month or two to settle before a heavy stone goes on it, so a temporary marker is a good first step.
Is a local stonemason or an online maker better in Ontario?
It depends on the stone. For heavy granite and upright headstones, a local monument company that delivers and sets the stone is often worth it. For small engraved stones and river rocks, online makers are usually cheaper and include lettering. Whichever you choose, approve a written proof before anything is cut.
Can I place a memorial stone for my pet in a public park in Ontario?
Generally no. Public land managers rarely permit private markers, and some also restrict scattering without the landowner's or local authority's consent. Some councils and parks departments offer memorial benches or trees with a dedication plaque. Most families remember the park in the stone's wording and set the stone itself at home.
How do heavy granite stones get delivered to rural parts of Ontario?
Large granite pieces tend to go by truck freight, and the driver may leave them at the roadside or ask you to collect from a depot. Before paying, ask who unloads it, how far it will be carried and who pays if a corner is chipped in transit. Some local monument makers deliver and set stones on their regular runs.
