Choosing a pet memorial stone in Van
Choosing the words for an engraving can take longer than choosing the memorial itself. A name and years are enough, but some Van families add a nickname, a line from a hymn or a short phrase the whole household used. Keep it brief so it can be read at a glance, and ask to approve a proof before anything is cut or etched.
There is no need to pick a permanent memorial the week your pet dies. Providers return ashes in a simple temporary container that can rest in a closet or cabinet for months without harm. Many families in Van wait until the first raw weeks pass, then decide whether they want an urn, a garden stone, a piece of jewelry or a mix of small keepsakes.
Low ground floods, and rural land around Van often has a creek or a wet corner. Before choosing the spot, think about where water sits after a heavy storm. A stone in a hollow can end up under silt, and the grave beneath may stay waterlogged. A slight rise, even a few feet higher, keeps both drier.
Van is home to about 2,993 people, the 272nd-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover. Garland, roughly 64 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Van run from there.
If you want to compare providers, look at Hideaway (11 miles), Mineola (13 miles) and Lindale (13 miles, a larger centre). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.
Our estimate
1,100
Van: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
2,993 ÷ 2.5 = 1,197 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 1,100. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
90
Estimated dog and cat losses in Van each year
How we calculated this
1,100 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 90 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]

Grave or ashes? The local habit in Texas
About 55.7%[5] of people in Texas are cremated, a share that has been rising for years. Many families here grew up visiting headstones in a churchyard or town cemetery, and a stone for a pet can feel like a natural extension of that habit. Others prefer something less formal, such as an engraved river rock in a flower bed.
For the Texas figure we rely on NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Van rather than as pet data.
Frost, sun and damp: matching stone to Van
Photo stones need a little thought in a sunny place like Van. Laser-etched portraits on black granite read best in soft light and can disappear in full midday glare, which is at its fiercest around August. Angle the stone slightly away from the afternoon sun or put it where a shrub throws some shade, and choose a crisp, high-contrast photo.
Plan installation around the heat. Setting a stone in Van means digging, leveling and tamping gravel, which is heavy work when August highs sit near 94°F. An early morning in spring or fall is easier, and the ground is often softer then. There's no rush: a temporary marker holds the spot perfectly well through summer.

Budgeting for the stone, lettering and delivery
Lead times vary more than prices. Natural engraved stones from one US maker arrive in ~1 week[6], made-to-order granite and bronze markers take 2–4 weeks[7], and a new full-size headstone from a monument company can take 6–12 weeks[8]. If you want the stone in place for an anniversary in Van, order well ahead.

What Texas allows for pet graves and markers
If you own your home, you can usually place a garden stone wherever you like; the stricter rules concern burying a body, not marking a spot. If you rent, ask your landlord before burying anything or setting a stone in concrete, and choose a stone you can lift and take with you. Below are the burial and scattering notes we have for Texas.

A step-by-step plan for your situation
- Work out what the stone is marking: a grave, buried ashes, a scattering spot or simply a place your pet loved.
- If ashes will go inside the stone, check the cavity size against your pet's ashes with our urn size calculator.
- Choose dense stone and carved lettering. Anything painted or printed onto the surface looks sharp when new and dulls after a few seasons of sun and rain.
- Keep the wording short. Most small stones fit two or three lines of 14 to 16 capital letters.
- Get written quotes from a few makers who deliver where you live, and find out how they handle a stone that's chipped in transit.
- Sign off the proof, and think about placement: a bed of gravel underneath, a spirit level on top, and enough distance from trees that roots won't tilt it.
Around the stone: plants, benches and small rituals
Some families in Van choose memorials that reflect the town's oil-field and ranching past: a stone carved with a pumpjack or a cattle brand, an urn made from reclaimed barn wood, or a framed photo of the pet on the family land. Others want something plain and quiet. What matters most is that the piece feels like your pet and not like a catalog page.

Questions people ask
How many pet owners live in Van?
By our estimate, about 1,100 households in Van have at least one dog or cat, and around 90 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 2,993, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Van?
Usually yes. Hideaway is about 11 miles away, Mineola is about 13 miles away and Lindale is about 13 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Where are the providers that serve Van actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Garland, about 64 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Van and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Why does the Van page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 55.7%[5] of Texas residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can I engrave a rock from my own garden or land?
Often, yes. Many monument companies will engrave a customer's own stone if its face is dense and smooth enough to hold lettering. Soft, crumbly or heavily layered rock won't take fine letters well. Take a photo and measurements to the engraver first, and ask whether they need the stone brought in or can work on site.
Will animals disturb a pet grave in the countryside near Van?
They can. Foxes, coyotes and raccoons sometimes dig at fresh graves, especially shallow ones. Bury at the depth your local rules require, then lay a heavy flat stone or paving slab over the site. Once the soil settles, you can set the engraved marker on top or beside it.
