Pantego, Texas
Local makers and practical limits in Pantego
When relatives live across the Metroplex or out of state, more than one household may want a piece of the remembrance. Some families order matching small keepsakes; others ask the provider for labeled portions. Settle this at the start, because separating remains afterward is a task most people would rather avoid. Small matching pieces also make thoughtful gifts for siblings.
Pantego's older lots often have established flower beds and large shade trees, which gives you room for a small outdoor memorial if you want one. Others prefer something indoors on a shelf near where the animal used to sleep. Think about where you will see it most each day, since that tends to be where it brings comfort. A photo frame, a stone or a planted shrub all count.
Around Pantego, the local hardware or farm supply store often sells blank stepping stones and river rocks, and some have paint pens or stencil kits. A homemade stone is a lovely short-term marker and a good project for children. For something permanent, pair it later with a professionally engraved piece of granite that won't fade.
About 2,440 people live in Pantego, which makes it the 284th-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Pantego are based about 3 miles away in Arlington, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Families in Pantego often end up using a provider from Dalworthington Gardens (1 miles), Arlington (3 miles, a larger centre) and Hurst (8 miles, a larger centre). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.
Our estimate
900
Pantego: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
2,440 ÷ 2.5 = 976 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 900. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
70
dog and cat deaths per year in Pantego, our estimate
How we calculated this
900 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 70 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

What local customs suggest for your pet's stone
As cremation has grown to about 55.7%[5] of deaths in Texas, many pet cemeteries have added small plots just for ashes. These usually take a smaller flat marker than a full grave and cost less to open. If a cemetery appeals but a whole plot feels like too much, ask whether it has an ashes section and what size stone it allows there.
That Texas rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Pantego only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
When to install, and what the seasons do to stone
Where summers peak around 96°F, as they do in Pantego in August, plants beside a memorial stone need to be tough. Drought-tolerant groundcovers, gravel mulch or a small native shrub look good without daily watering. Our memorial tree finder can suggest a tree or shrub that copes with local heat if you'd like something to grow beside the stone.
Plan installation around the heat. Setting a stone in Pantego means digging, leveling and tamping gravel, which is heavy work when August highs sit near 96°F. An early morning in spring or fall is easier, and the ground is often softer then. There's no rush: a temporary marker holds the spot perfectly well through summer.

Pet memorial stone prices for families in Pantego
Pet cemetery burial is where costs climb. A typical pet burial in a sample of 15 US pet cemeteries cost $1,500–$2,000[6], and starting prices ranged from $99–$4,000[7]. One Iowa cemetery charges $400 for a standard granite headstone on top of the plot[8]. A stone for your own garden in Pantego is far cheaper; the table shows the range.
The full price table by product is on our Texas page, and the services page explains what each option includes.

Where a pet stone can go in Texas
Pet cemeteries in Texas each set their own marker rules: size, material, whether upright stones are allowed and who installs them. Human cemeteries generally don't accept pets. If you plan a cemetery stone, get the rules sheet first. For a home memorial, here's what we know about burial and scattering locally.
To find your county or city office in Texas, start with the official Texas local government directory.
The rules that apply across Texas (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Texas page. Pantego may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
A step-by-step plan for your situation
- Note exactly where the grave is today. Pace it out from two fixed points, such as a fence post and the back step, and take a photo before the soil is raked flat.
- Cover the fresh soil with something heavy and flat, a slab or an overturned pot will do, to stop anything from digging there while the ground firms.
- Leave the permanent stone for a few weeks. Shock makes every choice feel urgent, and this one can wait until you're sleeping again.
- Top up the soil as it sinks. A new grave often drops a few inches; add soil, firm it with your foot and wait for it to stop moving.
- Measure the settled patch once it has stopped sinking, then pick a marker broad enough to span nearly all of it, since a covered grave is far less inviting to dig.
- Set the finished stone on gravel over the firmed ground, and once a good downpour has been through, put a level on it a second time.
Remembering your pet beside the stone
Hail, spring thunderstorms and summer heat in Tarrant County wear down outdoor memorials quickly. Granite and bronze hold up; painted concrete and resin crack or fade. If you want to plant something living, a native such as a Texas redbud or a cedar elm handles the local clay soil and dry spells well. Set any marker slightly raised so runoff does not cover it.

Questions people ask
Roughly how many pets die in Pantego each year?
Our estimate is around 70. It comes from Pantego's population (about 2,440), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 900 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Pantego?
There is no frozen-ground season here; average lows stay above freezing all year. The other pressure point is August, when highs around 96°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Where are the providers that serve Pantego actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Arlington, about 3 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Pantego and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Pantego?
The closest communities we cover are Dalworthington Gardens (about 1 miles), Arlington (about 3 miles) and Hurst (about 8 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Pantego too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Can a memorial stone hold my pet's ashes?
Yes. Some stones have a hollow underside sealed with a plug, or a cavity behind a screwed plate. Check the stated capacity: ashes typically weigh about 3-5% of body weight[10], so a large dog may need more space than most garden stones offer. A waterproof inner bag protects the ashes from damp.
How many words fit on a small pet memorial stone?
Less than most people expect. As a rough guide, a 12-inch-wide stone with 1-inch capital letters fits about 14 to 16 characters per line once margins are allowed for, and most small stones take two to four lines. A name, the years and one short line is the classic layout. Our memorial stone planner previews it for you.
