Eagan, Minnesota
Pet memorials in Eagan: the local picture
When choosing an urn, a common rule of thumb is about one cubic inch of capacity for every pound your companion weighed in life. Wood, ceramic, metal and plant-based materials all work; the choice mostly comes down to where the urn will sit and whether it will ever be buried. Many providers list capacity on each design, so compare against your pet's weight.
Eagan's many townhomes and apartments leave little room for a yard memorial, and plenty of people here turn a windowsill or a bookshelf into a small remembrance corner: an urn, a photo, perhaps a candle for the evenings. Over the months, new things tend to join it: a tag, a drawing, a sympathy card. Nothing needs to be chosen straight away, since ashes keep indefinitely in a closed container.
Small towns often have long family ties to the land. If the property may be sold one day, think about where the stone goes: a marker in the middle of the lawn may be moved by new owners, while one set near a boundary tree or in a planted bed is more likely to stay. You can also choose a stone light enough to take with you.
Eagan's population is around 67,109, the 13th-largest of the 67 Minnesota communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Eagan are based about 10 miles away in Saint Paul, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
The closest communities we cover are Inver Grove Heights (5 miles), Apple Valley (5 miles) and Rosemount (7 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Eagan too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.
Our estimate
24,500
Eagan: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
67,109 ÷ 2.5 = 26,844 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 24,500. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
2,050
Eagan families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
24,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 2,050 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.
53%[1]
53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
39%[3]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[4]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

What local customs suggest for your pet's stone
Cremation covers roughly 68.5%[5] of human deaths in Minnesota, and burial much of the rest, so it's common for two people in the same household to want different things. Cremation followed by burying the ashes under a stone often settles it: there's a grave to visit for one person and ashes that can travel for the other.
That Minnesota rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Eagan only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Choosing a stone that suits Eagan's seasons
Frozen ground in Eagan during January, February, March, November and December can make digging hard or impossible. If your pet died in winter, a temporary marker and a spring installation are perfectly normal. Many families keep the engraved stone indoors until the ground thaws, which also gives you time to see the proof and check the wording properly.
With 5 months of freezing lows in Eagan, frost heave is as big a risk as cracking. Wet soil expands as it freezes and can tilt a stone set directly on the ground. Set yours on 3 to 4 inches of compacted gravel so water drains away, and choose a flat, wide marker over a tall narrow one. Our cold-weather memorial notes go further.

How much to budget for a pet stone
Pet cemeteries price very differently from garden stones. By our estimate, the median starting burial price across 15 US pet cemeteries is ~$600[6], and a small pet's whole-body burial across five posted price lists comes to ~$350[7], often before any marker. One natural burial ground charges $250 for a boulder headstone, with engraving from $670[8]. A stone for an Eagan garden avoids those extras.

Burial, HOA and cemetery rules in Minnesota
Three sets of rules decide where a pet memorial stone can go in Minnesota: the public rules on burying a pet, private rules from your homeowners' association, landlord or strata, and the marker rules of any pet cemetery. A stone over buried ashes or in a planter usually raises no issue at all; a whole-body grave and an upright headstone raise the most questions.
Minnesota keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Eagan.
Home burial and scattering are governed at the Minnesota level first; our Minnesota rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Eagan or your HOA adds anything.
A simple plan for your pet's memorial stone
- Let your child help choose the spot. A place they can get to by themselves, or look at from their bedroom, tends to mean more to a child than any adult would guess.
- Start with a stone they decorate themselves. Outdoor paint pens on a smooth river rock give small hands something to do in the first raw days.
- Ask them for one word or line to include. Years on, it's usually the child's own phrase that the whole family holds dearest.
- Show them the proof before you approve it, and give them the job of reading the pet's name aloud one letter at a time.
- Keep the homemade stone next to the carved marker, or move it inside onto a shelf after the permanent one goes in.
- Give each child a job on the day: one carries the marker, one arranges pebbles around the edge, one waters whatever you plant beside it. Our guides have more ideas.
Making the stone a place to visit
Over the years some Eagan households lose more than one animal, and they build a shelf of small matching urns rather than scattering each set of ashes. Others choose a companion urn with two chambers so two pets who were inseparable can rest together. Engraving plates can often be swapped or added later, which keeps the display flexible as the family's story continues.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Eagan?
Usually yes. Inver Grove Heights is about 5 miles away, Apple Valley is about 5 miles away and Rosemount is about 7 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Where are the providers that serve Eagan actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Saint Paul, about 10 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Eagan and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Why does the Eagan page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 68.5%[5] of Minnesota residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Is Eagan big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 24,500 Eagan households keep a dog or cat and around 2,050 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 67,109), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
How much does a pet memorial stone cost in Eagan?
Published US prices give a good guide. Engraved garden stones start at ~$39[9], natural engraved river stones run $38–$115[10], flat granite markers start from $157.95[11] and upright granite headstones cost $258–$628[12] (per one large retailer). Delivery, a photo and cemetery setting fees are extra, so ask Eagan makers for a written total.
Can I put a pet memorial stone in a rented garden?
Usually yes, as long as it isn't fixed in concrete and you don't bury a body without the landlord's agreement. The simplest approach for renters is a stone you can lift: set on gravel, a garden stone or engraved rock comes out in minutes. A stone with a sealed ashes compartment lets your pet move with you.
