Marking your pet's resting place in Batavia
By our count, roughly 820 Batavia families lose a dog or cat every year. A memorial stone is one of the few decisions with no deadline, so here's what to know before you order.

Batavia, Illinois
Stone makers, yards and delivery in Batavia
Kane County's long run of frosty nights and mild afternoons splits bargain concrete and resin garden pieces after several winters. For a Batavia marker that stays outside, granite or bronze resting on crushed stone lasts for decades. Damp riverside summers can also warp or mildew untreated wood, so keep wooden vessels on an indoor shelf rather than out in the potting shed.
Batavia still calls itself the Windmill City, after the windmills once built in its factories, and some residents want a memorial with a little hometown character: a small engraved plaque among the daylilies, a vessel on a sunny sill, a framed paw impression beside an old photo. Mention prints and a snipped lock of fur to the provider early; neither can be made once the body is gone.
Small towns often have long family ties to the land. If the property may be sold one day, think about where the stone goes: a marker in the middle of the lawn may be moved by new owners, while one set near a boundary tree or in a planted bed is more likely to stay. You can also choose a stone light enough to take with you.
Batavia is home to about 26,586 people, the 83rd-largest of the 151 Illinois communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Batavia are based about 35 miles away in Chicago, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
The closest communities we cover are Geneva (3 miles), North Aurora (3 miles) and St. Charles (5 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Batavia too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.
Our estimate
9,800
Batavia: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
26,586 ÷ 2.5 = 10,634 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 9,800. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
820
Batavia families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
9,800 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 820 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

39%[3]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[4]

What local customs suggest for your pet's stone
In Illinois, where about 60.2%[5] of people are cremated, families are split fairly evenly between the two traditions, and pet owners are too. Whichever you choose, the stone question is much the same: will it sit over a body or over ashes, will it stay or travel with you, and does it need to meet a cemetery's rules?
We take the Illinois rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Batavia, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Which stones survive the weather in Batavia
Engraving depth matters most where winters are long. In Batavia, with freezing lows through January, February, March, November and December, ice sits in shallow letters and slowly softens their edges. Ask for sandblasted lettering at least an eighth of an inch deep on granite, avoid painted-only designs, and read our guide to outdoor stone grade and engraving depth before you order.
With 5 months of freezing lows in Batavia, frost heave is as big a risk as cracking. Wet soil expands as it freezes and can tilt a stone set directly on the ground. Set yours on 3 to 4 inches of compacted gravel so water drains away, and choose a flat, wide marker over a tall narrow one. Our cold-weather memorial notes go further.

Stone, engraving and setting: the real prices
Pet cemetery burial is where costs climb. A typical pet burial in a sample of 15 US pet cemeteries cost $1,500–$2,000[6], and starting prices ranged from $99–$4,000[7]. One Iowa cemetery charges $400 for a standard granite headstone on top of the plot[8]. A stone for your own garden in Batavia is far cheaper; the table shows the range.
We keep the detailed Illinois price table on one page so it stays current: see Illinois prices.

Rules to check before placing a stone in Illinois
Three sets of rules decide where a pet memorial stone can go in Illinois: the public rules on burying a pet, private rules from your homeowners' association, landlord or strata, and the marker rules of any pet cemetery. A stone over buried ashes or in a planter usually raises no issue at all; a whole-body grave and an upright headstone raise the most questions.
The official Illinois local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Batavia.
The rules that apply across Illinois (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Illinois page. Batavia may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
From first idea to a stone in the ground
- Let your child help choose the spot. A place they can get to by themselves, or look at from their bedroom, tends to mean more to a child than any adult would guess.
- Start with a stone they decorate themselves. Outdoor paint pens on a smooth river rock give small hands something to do in the first raw days.
- Ask them for one word or line to include. Children's phrases are often the ones a family treasures most years later.
- Show them the proof before you approve it, and give them the job of reading the pet's name aloud one letter at a time.
- Keep the homemade stone beside the engraved one, or bring it indoors to a shelf once the permanent marker is set.
- Give each child a job on the day: carrying the stone, placing pebbles around it or watering a new plant. More ideas are in our guides.
Keeping the memory close
Batavia's older neighborhoods, with limestone foundations and big oaks shading the lawns, suit memorials that feel settled: a flat granite stone along the garden path, a walnut chest on the bookcase, a slim pendant carrying a pinch of remains. The provider sends remains home in a plain container at first, which gives the household room to talk it over and pick something without pressure or a sales deadline.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Batavia?
Usually yes. Geneva is about 3 miles away, North Aurora is about 3 miles away and St. Charles is about 5 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Does the Batavia climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 84°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March, November and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
Where are the providers that serve Batavia actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Chicago, about 35 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Batavia and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
How do Illinois attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Illinois human cremation rate at about 60.2%[5]. We show it on the Batavia page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Will animals disturb a pet grave in the countryside near Batavia?
They can. Foxes, coyotes and raccoons sometimes dig at fresh graves, especially shallow ones. Bury at the depth your local rules require, then lay a heavy flat stone or paving slab over the site. Once the soil settles, you can set the engraved marker on top or beside it.
Is a memorial stone a good idea if my pet was cremated?
Yes, and cremation gives you more freedom. The stone can sit over a small portion of buried ashes, hold ashes in a sealed compartment or simply mark a favorite spot, and there's no grave to settle, so you can set it straight away. You can also keep most of the ashes indoors and bury just a spoonful.
