Palo Alto, California
Local makers and practical limits in Palo Alto
Many Palo Alto families have relatives in India, China, Europe and beyond. When family overseas want to share in remembering, a provider can often split ashes into a few small sealed vessels; tuck a short written description in with any that will travel by plane. A shared photo book, printed in several copies, is another way to connect a family spread across continents.
Palo Alto's Eichler homes, with their atriums and walls of glass, lend themselves to understated memorials: a smooth river stone in the atrium, a succulent in a ceramic pot, a single framed photograph on a clean white wall. Minimal pieces suit these houses, but so does something warm and handmade. Choose what fits your pet's personality as much as your home's architecture.
Rural water is worth thinking about. If your home draws from a private well, keep any grave well away from it and downhill if possible; your state or regional rules set the minimum distance. The stone itself poses no risk to water, but the site you choose for it usually marks where your pet is buried.
With roughly 67,609 residents, Palo Alto is the 123rd-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Fremont, about 11 miles (18 km) away, which is where some providers serving Palo Alto are based.
If you want to compare providers, look at East Palo Alto (2 miles), Menlo Park (2 miles) and Atherton (3 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.
Our estimate
25,000
How many dog- or cat-owning households Palo Alto has (estimate)
How we calculated this
67,609 ÷ 2.5 = 27,044 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 25,000. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
2,050
Palo Alto families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
25,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 2,050 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.
53%[1]
53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
39%[3]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[4]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.
We built the this numbers from Montoya et al. 2023, Frontiers in Veterinary Science and American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 State of the Industry, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

Grave or ashes? The local habit in California
With about 70.5%[5] of people in California cremated, many families have never needed a headstone for anyone. That can make ordering a stone feel unfamiliar. The good news is that a pet marker is simpler than a human memorial: no cemetery permit in most cases, no minimum size, and you can place it wherever your pet was happiest.
We take the California rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Palo Alto, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
When to install, and what the seasons do to stone
Because frost is rare in Palo Alto, you can install a stone almost any time of year. The best days are dry ones after rain, when the soil is soft enough to dig but not muddy. Avoid setting a stone just before December, the wettest month, if you're on heavy clay; wet ground settles unevenly and the stone may tilt.
Mild, damp weather in Palo Alto means moss and lichen grow fast on stone, especially in shade. They look lovely on a natural rock but can fill in shallow lettering within a few years. Choose deep carved letters, put the stone where it gets some sun, and scrub it gently with water and a soft brush once or twice a year.

How much to budget for a pet stone
Pet cemetery burial is where costs climb. A typical pet burial in a sample of 15 US pet cemeteries cost $1,500–$2,000[6], and starting prices ranged from $99–$4,000[7]. One Iowa cemetery charges $400 for a standard granite headstone on top of the plot[8]. A stone for your own garden in Palo Alto is far cheaper; the table shows the range.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for California: California costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Home burial, rentals and pet cemeteries in California
Some human cemeteries now have a pet section or accept a pet's ashes in a family plot, while many still refuse animals entirely. If you'd like your pet near relatives, ask the cemetery office for its written policy on pets, ashes and marker sizes before buying anything. Below is what we know about pet burial and scattering in California.
The official California local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Palo Alto.
For California's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the California guide. Local rules in Palo Alto can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
How to choose, order and set a pet stone
- Decide how much of the ashes belongs with the stone: the whole amount enclosed in a cavity, just a little buried under it, or nothing at all, so the marker only names a spot your pet was fond of.
- If the stone will hold ashes, ask the maker for the cavity's volume and set it against the size of the bag or box that came back from the crematory. Our urn size calculator gives a rough figure for how much room the ashes take.
- Keep the ashes in a sealed waterproof pouch rather than pouring them straight into the stone; unbagged, they absorb damp and set into lumps.
- Place the stone as soon as it arrives if you like. There's no soil to wait on, so families often choose a meaningful date, a birthday or the first mild weekend of the year.
- Pick a spot that stays yours, such as a patio corner or a large planter, if there's a chance you'll relocate.
- Write down what's inside the stone and keep the note with your household papers, so nobody later mistakes it for a garden ornament.
Small rituals that keep the stone meaningful
Some Palo Alto families feel drawn to the Baylands marshes or the oak-covered foothills as places to remember a pet, whether to leave a little of the ashes or simply to sit with a view. Preserves have their own policies, so read up before you go. Plenty of people bring the ashes home and return to those places only to think and remember.

Questions people ask
Why does the Palo Alto page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 70.5%[5] of California residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Is Palo Alto big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 25,000 Palo Alto households keep a dog or cat and around 2,050 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 67,609), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
Where are the providers that serve Palo Alto actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Fremont, about 11 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Palo Alto and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Palo Alto?
The closest communities we cover are East Palo Alto (about 2 miles), Menlo Park (about 2 miles) and Atherton (about 3 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Palo Alto too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Does my HOA need to approve a pet memorial stone in Palo Alto?
Usually not for a small stone in a backyard bed, but read your covenants. Some associations restrict permanent features, anything set in concrete or anything visible from the street. A flush marker or engraved garden stone in the back is the least likely to raise questions; an upright headstone in the front yard is the most.
How do I stop moss growing on my pet's stone in Palo Alto?
Moss and algae love damp shade, so a spot with a few hours of sun helps most. Keep soil and mulch off the stone's face, set it on gravel so it drains, and scrub it gently with plain water and a soft brush once or twice a year. Avoid bleach and wire brushes, which can damage the surface.
