An outdoor memorial for your pet, made for Albany

Albany, California

Local makers and practical limits in Albany

The Albany Bulb and the shoreline paths are where many residents spent evenings with their animals, watching the sun set behind the Golden Gate. The shoreline is managed as parkland, with its own rules on scattering, so check with the park district first. A framed photograph from one of those evenings, hung near the ashes at home, can keep the place close without leaving anything behind.

Albany is a town of artists, teachers and university families, and memorials here are often handmade: a small ceramic jar thrown by a local potter, a watercolor of the animal asleep in a sunny window, a shadow box with a collar and tags. Ask any maker how many weeks custom work will take, and whether they need a portion of the ashes or only a good photo.

Delivery to a rural address can add cost and time. Freight carriers sometimes charge extra for residential or remote addresses and may deliver to the end of a long driveway only. When you order for Albany, ask about the delivery method up front, or arrange to collect the stone from a depot or maker in a larger center such as Oakland.

About 19,195 people live in Albany, which makes it the 265th-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. Oakland, roughly 6 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Albany run from there.

Nearby, we also have local pages for Berkeley (2 miles, a larger centre), El Cerrito (2 miles) and Emeryville (4 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.

Our estimate

7,050

Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Albany

How we calculated this

19,195 ÷ 2.5 = 7,678 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 7,050. A household with several pets counts once.

Our estimate

590

dog and cat deaths per year in Albany, our estimate

How we calculated this

7,050 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 590 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

53%[1]

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.

12.69 years[2]

US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.

39%[3]

39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.

11.18 years[4]

US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

None of the figures on this this page are ours alone: they rest on American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 State of the Industry and Montoya et al. 2023, Frontiers in Veterinary Science.

A pet at home in Albany

Local traditions and what they mean for a pet stone

In places where cremation is as common as it is in California, where about 70.5%[5] of people are cremated, ashes give families more freedom. A stone doesn't have to sit over a grave. It can mark a scattering spot, hold a portion of ashes in a cavity or stand in a patio planter, and it can move with you when you do.

We take the California rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Albany, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.

Which stones survive the weather in Albany

A mild climate like Albany's gives you room to choose on looks rather than survival. Slate plaques, sandstone and weathered river rock all suit gardens here. Soft stones like sandstone and limestone do absorb water, so expect them to darken and grow moss over time; if you want crisp lettering for decades, granite is still the safer bet.

Even in a mild place like Albany, where lows in January average around 47°F, drainage matters. Water sitting under a stone encourages algae and lets it sink at one corner. Set it on a thin layer of gravel, keep mulch and soil off its face, and it will look much the same in ten years as on the day you placed it.

Stone, engraving and setting: the real prices

Pet cemetery burial is where costs climb. A typical pet burial in a sample of 15 US pet cemeteries cost $1,500–$2,000[6], and starting prices ranged from $99–$4,000[7]. One Iowa cemetery charges $400 for a standard granite headstone on top of the plot[8]. A stone for your own garden in Albany is far cheaper; the table shows the range.

We keep the detailed California price table on one page so it stays current: see California prices.

Burial, HOA and cemetery rules in California

Burying a pet on land that belongs to someone else, such as a parent's farm or a friend's garden, needs the owner's clear agreement, and it's wise to note the spot for whoever owns the land next. The stone itself is usually the easy part. Our local notes on burial and scattering in California follow.

Start with the California rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat Albany's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.

A simple plan for your pet's memorial stone

  1. Note exactly where the grave is today. Count the steps from two things that won't move, like a post and the porch step, and photograph it before raking evens out the ground.
  2. Cover the fresh soil with something heavy and flat, a slab or an overturned pot will do, to stop anything from digging there while the ground firms.
  3. Leave the permanent stone for a few weeks. In the first days everything seems to need deciding at once; this decision keeps until you've had some proper rest.
  4. Top up the soil as it sinks. Expect the surface to fall by a few inches at first; fill the dip, tread it down and repeat until it holds.
  5. Measure the settled patch once it has stopped sinking, then pick a marker broad enough to span nearly all of it, since a covered grave is far less inviting to dig.
  6. Set the finished stone on gravel over the firmed ground, and once a good downpour has been through, put a level on it a second time.

Remembering your pet beside the stone

Albany's bungalow gardens are small but loved, and a memorial often fits a single corner: a flat stone by the porch steps, a fern growing in a pot over a biodegradable urn, a plaque screwed to the fence. If you rent, a container planting or a portable stone can go with you on moving day. Before ordering, confirm the total price and when the piece will arrive.

Questions people ask

Does the Albany climate change what I should do first?

Only the timing. In September, with highs near 70°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.

Is Albany big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?

Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 7,050 Albany households keep a dog or cat and around 590 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 19,195), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.

Will I have to travel to Oakland to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in Oakland (roughly 6 miles from Albany) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

Why does the Albany page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 70.5%[5] of California residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

Can I bury my pet in my backyard in Albany and put a stone on it?

In many places you can bury a pet on land you own, with rules about depth and distance from water, but cities and homeowners' associations can be stricter. Check the local notes on this page and your HOA rules. A stone marking the grave rarely needs any permission of its own once the burial itself is allowed.

What do people usually engrave on a pet memorial stone?

Most choose the pet's name and years, plus one short line: a nickname, a place they loved or a phrase the family always said. A paw print or small outline is a popular alternative to words. Read the wording out loud, check the spelling with someone else and keep it short enough to read from the path.
