An outdoor memorial for your pet, made for Neenah
Neenah has an estimated 10,000 dog- or cat-owning households. When a stone is the memorial you want, the local climate, your yard and any HOA or lease rules all shape the right choice.

Neenah, Wisconsin
Local makers and practical limits in Neenah
In a city long known for paper-making, an inked paw or hoof print on heavy art paper feels like a fitting memorial, as does a handwritten journal of memories or a printed photo book. Other Neenah families prefer a mantel urn, a stepping stone by the porch, or jewelry with a tiny sealed compartment for ashes. Many combine two or three of these.
Outdoor memorials near Lake Winnebago face wind, ice and deep snow. A flush granite marker, or bronze fixed to a boulder, holds up better than a delicate figurine or a painted sign on a stake. Anyone hoping to pair a sapling with a biodegradable urn should hold off until the soil softens in May, and use a yard they own rather than rented or shared land.
Human cemeteries in towns like Neenah generally don't accept pet burials, though a few have added pet sections or allow ashes in some circumstances. If you want your pet near a family plot, ask the cemetery office directly rather than assuming. Otherwise, a private stone on family land or at a regional pet cemetery is the usual route.
Neenah is home to about 27,638 people, the 29th-largest of the 50 Wisconsin communities we cover.
Families in Neenah often end up using a provider from Fox Crossing (4 miles), Menasha (4 miles) and Appleton (9 miles, a larger centre). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.
Our estimate
10,000
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Neenah
How we calculated this
27,638 ÷ 2.5 = 11,055 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 10,000. Multi-pet homes count once.

How we calculated this
10,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 850 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

What local customs suggest for your pet's stone
Scattering is common in Wisconsin, since cremation accounts for roughly 70.7%[5] of human deaths there, and many families scatter a pet's ashes on a beach or a favorite trail. You can't leave a stone there, but you can bring the place home: a pebble from that beach set beside an engraved marker, or the trail's name carved on the stone itself.
That Wisconsin rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Neenah only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
When to install, and what the seasons do to stone
Snow and salt are both hard on stone in Neenah. A flush marker disappears under snow from January, February, March, November and December, so add a small stake or a tall plant nearby if you want to find it easily. Keep de-icing salt away from the memorial: salt draws water into stone and speeds up flaking, especially on limestone, marble and concrete.
Neenah winters are the real test for a memorial stone. Average lows drop below freezing in January, February, March, November and December, and every freeze-thaw cycle lets water into porous stone, freeze, expand and pry off flakes, often from the edges of engraved letters first. Dense granite shrugs this off; slate, sandstone, concrete and cast resin can crack within a few winters.

How much to budget for a pet stone
Lead times vary more than prices. Natural engraved stones from one US maker arrive in ~1 week[6], made-to-order granite and bronze markers take 2–4 weeks[7], and a new full-size headstone from a monument company can take 6–12 weeks[8]. If you want the stone in place for an anniversary in Neenah, order well ahead.

Where a pet stone can go in Wisconsin
Burying a pet on land that belongs to someone else, such as a parent's farm or a friend's garden, needs the owner's clear agreement, and it's wise to note the spot for whoever owns the land next. The stone itself is usually the easy part. Our local notes on burial and scattering in Wisconsin follow.
To find your county or city office in Wisconsin, start with the official Wisconsin local government directory.
The Wisconsin page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Neenah's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
What to do first, and what can wait
- Note exactly where the grave is today. Pace it out from two fixed points, such as a fence post and the back step, and take a photo before the soil is raked flat.
- Cover the fresh soil with something heavy and flat, like a paving slab or an upturned planter, so digging animals leave it alone while it settles.
- Leave the permanent stone for a few weeks. In the first days everything seems to need deciding at once; this decision keeps until you've had some proper rest.
- Top up the soil as it sinks. A new grave often drops a few inches; add soil, firm it with your foot and wait for it to stop moving.
- Measure the settled patch and choose a stone wide enough to cover most of it, which also discourages anything from digging there later.
- Set the finished stone on gravel over the firmed ground, and once a good downpour has been through, put a level on it a second time.
Around the stone: plants, benches and small rituals
Wisconsin's high cremation rate means plenty of families have already kept a relative's ashes at home, so doing the same for a pet feels natural. Some Neenah households divide ashes among several people, or reserve a portion for scattering on a summer evening. Let the provider know how many shares you'd like before the cremation takes place, so small containers can be filled at the same time.

Questions people ask
Roughly how many pets die in Neenah each year?
Our estimate is around 850. It comes from Neenah's population (about 27,638), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 10,000 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
Does the Neenah climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 82°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March, November and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
How do Wisconsin attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Wisconsin human cremation rate at about 70.7%[5]. We show it on the Neenah page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Neenah?
The closest communities we cover are Fox Crossing (about 4 miles), Menasha (about 4 miles) and Appleton (about 9 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Neenah too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Is it too late to get a stone for a pet who died years ago?
Not at all. Many families order a stone months or years later, once they know where they'll settle or when the grief has softened enough to choose words. If you're not sure exactly where your pet was buried, a stone can mark the general area or a spot in the garden they loved.
Will animals disturb a pet grave in the countryside near Neenah?
They can. Foxes, coyotes and raccoons sometimes dig at fresh graves, especially shallow ones. Bury at the depth your local rules require, then lay a heavy flat stone or paving slab over the site. Once the soil settles, you can set the engraved marker on top or beside it.
