Shoreline, Washington
Pet memorials in Shoreline: the local picture
Under Shoreline's tall firs and cedars, moss creeps over anything left in a shady garden bed within a winter or two. For a marker outside, polished granite or bronze placed where some light reaches it will stay readable. A memorial stepping stone set into a well-used path is another idea: regular footsteps keep it cleaner than a stone tucked away beneath the ferns.
Plenty of Shoreline parents have grown children living elsewhere around Seattle or out of state, and some of them will hope for a portion. Mention it when you first arrange the cremation so each share is packed on its own, and pick small vessels that pack easily. A locket or a palm-sized urn slips into a carry-on for someone flying home after a visit, and it takes up very little space on a dorm or apartment shelf.
On a property near Shoreline, a big natural boulder can make a striking memorial, but moving one is serious work. A tractor bucket or skid steer can shift it, yet stones slip and roll; keep people well clear, and never stand downhill. For anything over a few hundred pounds, ask the engraver whether they can carve it where it will stay.
About 66,542 people live in Shoreline, which makes it the 19th-largest of the 67 Washington communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Seattle, about 11 miles (17 km) away, which is where some providers serving Shoreline are based.
Families in Shoreline often end up using a provider from Mountlake Terrace (3 miles), Edmonds (4 miles) and Kenmore (5 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.
Our estimate
24,500
How many dog- or cat-owning households Shoreline has (estimate)
How we calculated this
66,542 ÷ 2.5 = 26,617 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 24,500. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
2,050
Estimated dog and cat losses in Shoreline each year
How we calculated this
24,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 2,050 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

Local traditions and what they mean for a pet stone
About 79.1%[5] of people in Washington are cremated, and local pet crematories are well established. Many offer memorial stones alongside urns, so it's easy to order one when you collect your pet's ashes. It's worth pausing first: a stone chosen a few weeks later, when you know where it will go, usually suits the spot better.
We take the Washington rate from Direct Cremate (citing CANA) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Shoreline, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Choosing a stone that suits Shoreline's seasons
Grass keeps growing for much of the year in Shoreline, and it creeps over a flush marker faster than you'd think. A narrow edging strip of gravel or brick around the stone stops turf from swallowing the lettering, gives the mower a clean line and saves you trimming by hand every few weeks.
Mild, damp weather in Shoreline means moss and lichen grow fast on stone, especially in shade. They look lovely on a natural rock but can fill in shallow lettering within a few years. Choose deep carved letters, put the stone where it gets some sun, and scrub it gently with water and a soft brush once or twice a year.

Budgeting for the stone, lettering and delivery
Pet memorial stones cover a wide price range in the US, and the material matters more than the size. Engraved garden stones start at ~$39[6] across three US sellers, while flat granite markers start from $157.95[7] and upright granite headstones run $258–$628[8]. The table shows published prices you can use to judge any quote from a maker serving Shoreline.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Washington: Washington costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

What Washington allows for pet graves and markers
If you own your home, you can usually place a garden stone wherever you like; the stricter rules concern burying a body, not marking a spot. If you rent, ask your landlord before burying anything or setting a stone in concrete, and choose a stone you can lift and take with you. Below are the burial and scattering notes we have for Washington.
To find your county or city office in Washington, start with the official Washington local government directory.
The Washington page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Shoreline's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
A step-by-step plan for your situation
- Decide whether each pet gets its own stone or they share one. Several small stones in a matching set look right along a walkway, while a single bigger marker carrying all the names takes up less space.
- If you expect to add names later, leave space on purpose. Have the engraver set the first inscription high up and leave the rest of the face clear.
- Stay with one maker where you can, and keep a record of the stone type, typeface and letter height so a later inscription matches.
- Ask now what a second inscription will cost and whether the stone has to go back to the workshop or can be cut in place.
- Leave enough room between graves that stones don't crowd each other, and sketch a simple plan showing who rests where.
- Set every stone at the same height on the same gravel base, which keeps the row level as it beds in and lets you mow straight over without catching an edge.
Keeping the memory close
Being next door to Seattle's studios and galleries, some Shoreline families commission a memorial rather than buying one off a shelf: a hand-blown glass orb swirled through with ash, a ceramic jar from a regional potter or a small watercolor painted from a favorite snapshot. Commissions like these often take a month or more, and the crematory's plain temporary box works perfectly well until the finished piece arrives.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Shoreline?
Usually yes. Mountlake Terrace is about 3 miles away, Edmonds is about 4 miles away and Kenmore is about 5 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Why does the Shoreline page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Direct Cremate (citing CANA) (2024) reports about 79.1%[5] of Washington residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Where are the providers that serve Shoreline actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Seattle, about 11 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Shoreline and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Roughly how many pets die in Shoreline each year?
Our estimate is around 2,050. It comes from Shoreline's population (about 66,542), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 24,500 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
Can a memorial stone hold my pet's ashes?
Yes. Some stones have a hollow underside sealed with a plug, or a cavity behind a screwed plate. Check the stated capacity: ashes typically weigh about 3-5% of body weight[10], so a large dog may need more space than most garden stones offer. A waterproof inner bag protects the ashes from damp.
Will animals disturb a pet grave in the countryside near Shoreline?
They can. Foxes, coyotes and raccoons sometimes dig at fresh graves, especially shallow ones. Bury at the depth your local rules require, then lay a heavy flat stone or paving slab over the site. Once the soil settles, you can set the engraved marker on top or beside it.
