Pet grave markers and garden stones in Arlington
Arlington has an estimated 8,100 dog- or cat-owning households. When a stone is the memorial you want, the local climate, your yard and any HOA or lease rules all shape the right choice.

Arlington, Washington
Stone makers, yards and delivery in Arlington
Arlington's farm roots come through in its memorials: a brass plate on the barn wall, a name painted above a stall door, or ashes worked into the soil of a dahlia bed. Others choose a plantable urn and set a native cedar or dogwood in the yard. Simple tributes made at home tend to feel right in a town like this one.
Families on Arlington acreage often want a tribute they can stroll out to: a slab of river stone under a big-leaf maple, a cedar bench beside the vegetable garden, or a tree planted in spring. Households near downtown may lean toward an urn or a wooden keepsake box on a bookshelf. Both work fine, and a teaspoon of ashes held back now leaves room for a pendant or ring later.
Proofs matter even more when the maker is far away. If you order online or through a monument shop in a larger center such as Seattle, ask for a digital proof showing the exact letters, spacing and any picture, and check it on your phone at arm's length. Spelling mistakes can't be sanded out of granite, and a return trip is a long drive.
Arlington's population is around 22,031, the 52nd-largest of the 67 Washington communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Arlington are based about 40 miles away in Seattle, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
For a second opinion on price, Marysville (6 miles, a larger centre), Lake Stevens (12 miles) and Everett (14 miles, a larger centre) are close enough that their providers cover Arlington routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.
Our estimate
8,100
Arlington: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
22,031 ÷ 2.5 = 8,812 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 8,100. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
680
dog and cat deaths per year in Arlington, our estimate
How we calculated this
8,100 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 680 a year. Treat it as a minimum.
53%[1]
53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
39%[3]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[4]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.
We built the this numbers from American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 State of the Industry and Montoya et al. 2023, Frontiers in Veterinary Science, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

How local customs shape pet memorials
About 79.1%[5] of people in Washington are cremated, and local pet crematories are well established. Many offer memorial stones alongside urns, so it's easy to order one when you collect your pet's ashes. It's worth pausing first: a stone chosen a few weeks later, when you know where it will go, usually suits the spot better.
Direct Cremate (citing CANA) (2024) is where the Washington figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Arlington tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Frost, sun and damp: matching stone to Arlington
Think about the seasons you actually get around Arlington. Install when the ground is soft and the weather is comfortable, check any ashes compartment seal before the wettest or coldest part of the year, and give the stone a gentle clean with plain water once or twice a year.

Budgeting for the stone, lettering and delivery
In Arlington, as anywhere in the US, the engraving can cost as much as the stone. Monument engravers who charge by the letter typically ask $8–$35/char[6], and a standard 40 to 60 character inscription can total $500 to $1,200 at those rates[6]. Small online pet stones usually include a few lines of text in the price, which is why they look so much cheaper.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Washington: Washington costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

What Washington allows for pet graves and markers
If you own your home, you can usually place a garden stone wherever you like; the stricter rules concern burying a body, not marking a spot. If you rent, ask your landlord before burying anything or setting a stone in concrete, and choose a stone you can lift and take with you. Below are the burial and scattering notes we have for Washington.
To find your county or city office in Washington, start with the official Washington local government directory.
We keep Washington's burial and scattering rules in one place: the Washington rules summary. Before a home burial in Arlington, also ask the city whether local ordinances add anything.
From first idea to a stone in the ground
- Decide whether the stone should travel with you. If you rent, or a move is on the horizon, keep it light enough to carry to the next house.
- Pick a spot you'll see every day, from a window or the back door, rather than a far corner you rarely visit.
- Keep it clear of pipes and roots. Have buried utilities located before you put a spade in, and stay well back from the base of any tree.
- Order a stone rated for outdoor use in your climate, with sandblasted lettering at least an eighth of an inch deep.
- Check the proof carefully. Names, dates and punctuation can't be changed once the stone is cut.
- Install it, then look after it lightly: a soft brush and plain water once or twice a year is plenty.
Around the stone: plants, benches and small rituals
Steady rain keeps north Snohomish County lush, and that means outdoor memorials have to earn their place. Granite, basalt and bronze can last decades out in the weather; painted resin and thin tin rarely manage a few years. A gravel footing stops a stone from leaning as the soil softens, while paper, fabric and photographs are happier inside, perhaps in a shadow box hung near the back door.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to Seattle to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Seattle (roughly 40 miles from Arlington) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Arlington?
Usually yes. Marysville is about 6 miles away, Lake Stevens is about 12 miles away and Everett is about 14 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is cremation common in Washington?
For people, yes: about 79.1%[5] of Washington deaths end in cremation, according to Direct Cremate (citing CANA) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Arlington follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Is Arlington big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 8,100 Arlington households keep a dog or cat and around 680 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 22,031), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
What does a pet cemetery plot cost compared with a garden stone?
A lot more. In a sample of 15 US pet cemeteries, a typical burial cost $1,500–$2,000[8], and ongoing care can add more; one New York cemetery charges $105/yr or $3,500[9] for upkeep. A garden stone at home costs only the stone and delivery, starting at ~$39[10] for an engraved garden stone.
What do people usually engrave on a pet memorial stone?
Most choose the pet's name and years, plus one short line: a nickname, a place they loved or a phrase the family always said. A paw print or small outline is a popular alternative to words. Read the wording out loud, check the spelling with someone else and keep it short enough to read from the path.
