Tooele, Utah
Choosing a pet memorial stone in Tooele
Many Tooele families have favorite places in Settlement Canyon or up toward Deseret Peak in the Stansburys, and some would like to release a portion of the ashes there. Land around the valley may be national forest, Bureau of Land Management ground or private, so find out who manages the spot and follow their rules, staying away from springs and streams. Keeping a portion at home leaves the option open.
Dry wind and fierce sun are hard on garden tributes in Tooele. Pick heavy stone or bronze, and anchor it low, ideally on a poured base, so gusts cannot shift it. For a planted memorial, a native juniper, a cliffrose or another drought-hardy shrub will cope with the valley's thin rainfall. Indoors, urns, pendants and framed prints stay safe from dust and the elements.
In a town the size of Tooele, there may be no monument company at all, and that's fine. Online makers ship small stones anywhere, and a larger center such as Salt Lake City usually has a monument company that will engrave a pet marker. Rural makers are sometimes the most flexible: many will cut a small marker from leftover granite if you ask directly.
About 42,270 people live in Tooele, which makes it the 23rd-largest of the 52 Utah communities we cover. Salt Lake City, roughly 27 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Tooele run from there.
Tooele sits within easy reach of Herriman (15 miles), Magna (17 miles) and South Jordan (17 miles, a larger centre). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Tooele; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.
Our estimate
15,500
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Tooele
How we calculated this
42,270 ÷ 2.5 = 16,908 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 15,500. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
1,300
Tooele families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
15,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,300 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

Local traditions and what they mean for a pet stone
Cremation is less common in Utah than in much of the world: about 46.1%[5] of people are cremated. That doesn't limit your options for a pet. Crematories serve most areas and a stone can mark ashes just as well as a grave. It simply means more families here choose burial, and stone makers are experienced with grave markers.
We take the Utah rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Tooele, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Tooele weather and your pet's stone
Tooele gives a memorial stone both extremes: freezing lows in January, February and December and summer highs around 94°F in July. That combination rules out most cast resin and painted designs, which crack in the cold and fade in the sun. Granite with deep, carved lettering is the one material that reliably handles both.
Big seasonal swings move the ground. In Tooele, soil freezes and swells in winter, then bakes and shrinks in summer, and both can tip a stone set straight onto dirt. A bed of 3 to 4 inches of compacted gravel under the stone is the simplest fix; for anything heavier, ask the maker about a small concrete footing.

What drives the price of a pet memorial stone
Pet cemetery burial is where costs climb. A typical pet burial in a sample of 15 US pet cemeteries cost $1,500–$2,000[6], and starting prices ranged from $99–$4,000[7]. One Iowa cemetery charges $400 for a standard granite headstone on top of the plot[8]. A stone for your own garden in Tooele is far cheaper; the table shows the range.

Rules to check before placing a stone in Utah
Burying a pet on land that belongs to someone else, such as a parent's farm or a friend's garden, needs the owner's clear agreement, and it's wise to note the spot for whoever owns the land next. The stone itself is usually the easy part. Our local notes on burial and scattering in Utah follow.
The official Utah local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Tooele.
The rules that apply across Utah (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Utah page. Tooele may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
A simple plan for your pet's memorial stone
- Note exactly where the grave is today. Pace it out from two fixed points, such as a fence post and the back step, and take a photo before the soil is raked flat.
- Cover the fresh soil with something heavy and flat, a slab or an overturned pot will do, to stop anything from digging there while the ground firms.
- Leave the permanent stone for a few weeks. In the first days everything seems to need deciding at once; this decision keeps until you've had some proper rest.
- Top up the soil as it sinks. Expect the surface to fall by a few inches at first; fill the dip, tread it down and repeat until it holds.
- Measure the settled patch and choose a stone wide enough to cover most of it, which also discourages anything from digging there later.
- Set the finished stone on gravel over the firmed ground, and once a good downpour has been through, put a level on it a second time.
Making the stone a place to visit
Tooele's mining and military history, and the rugged ranges that ring the valley, give many homes a practical, no-frills character, and memorials here often follow suit: a name cut into a fieldstone, a steel plaque, or a pine box made in the garage. For something more personal, a frame holding the pet's collar and a favorite snapshot can stand next to the ashes on a shelf.

Questions people ask
How many pet owners live in Tooele?
By our estimate, about 15,500 households in Tooele have at least one dog or cat, and around 1,300 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 42,270, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Tooele?
The closest communities we cover are Herriman (about 15 miles), Magna (about 17 miles) and South Jordan (about 17 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Tooele too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Where are the providers that serve Tooele actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Salt Lake City, about 27 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Tooele and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Does the Tooele climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 94°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
What is the best stone for a pet grave in a cold climate?
Dense granite. It absorbs very little water, so it doesn't crack or flake when water freezes inside it. Slate can split along its layers, while sandstone, concrete and cast resin crack or crumble after a few hard winters. Choose deep sandblasted lettering and set the stone on compacted gravel so frost doesn't tilt it.
What does a pet cemetery plot cost compared with a garden stone?
A lot more. In a sample of 15 US pet cemeteries, a typical burial cost $1,500–$2,000[6], and ongoing care can add more; one New York cemetery charges $105/yr or $3,500[10] for upkeep. A garden stone at home costs only the stone and delivery, starting at ~$39[11] for an engraved garden stone.
