An outdoor memorial for your pet, made for Sandy
Around 2,850 dogs and cats die in Sandy each year, by our estimate. If yours was one of them, this guide covers which stones suit local weather, what they cost and where they can go.

Choosing a pet memorial stone in Sandy
Some Sandy families divide ashes among a main urn and several keepsakes, so grown children in other parts of the valley or out of state each hold a share. Pendants with a small chamber, glass beads fused with a pinch of ash, or tiny matching urns all work. Mention the split on your first call, so each portion comes back sealed and labeled.
Views of the Wasatch shape daily life in Sandy, and many memorial ideas follow from that: a granite marker in a garden bed facing the mountains, a watercolor of a favorite trail, or a small urn on the mantel below a photo taken on a snowy morning. Choose a piece that suits the place you will see it every day, not just what looks good in a catalog.
In a town the size of Sandy, there may be no monument company at all, and that's fine. Online makers ship small stones anywhere, and a larger center such as Salt Lake City usually has a monument company that will engrave a pet marker. Rural makers are sometimes the most flexible: many will cut a small marker from leftover granite if you ask directly.
About 92,386 people live in Sandy, which makes it the 8th-largest of the 52 Utah communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Sandy are based about 13 miles away in Salt Lake City, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
If you want to compare providers, look at Cottonwood Heights (3 miles), Midvale (4 miles) and Draper (5 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.
Our estimate
34,000
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Sandy
How we calculated this
92,386 ÷ 2.5 = 36,954 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 34,000. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
2,850
Estimated dog and cat losses in Sandy each year
How we calculated this
34,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 2,850 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

How Utah remembers its dead, and its pets
Cremation is less common in Utah than in much of the world: about 46.1%[5] of people are cremated. That doesn't limit your options for a pet. Crematories serve most areas and a stone can mark ashes just as well as a grave. It simply means more families here choose burial, and stone makers are experienced with grave markers.

When to install, and what the seasons do to stone
Plan installation for the gentle seasons in Sandy. The ground is often frozen in January, February and December, and digging and tamping gravel in the July heat is hard going. Late spring and early fall usually give you soft soil and comfortable weather, and the stone can wait indoors until then.
Seasonal extremes in Sandy mean plantings beside a stone have to be hardy both ways. A small shrub that survives January, February and December frost and July heat will soften the look of a new marker. Our memorial tree finder suggests trees and shrubs by climate if you'd like something living beside the stone.

Pet memorial stone prices for families in Sandy
Pet cemeteries price very differently from garden stones. By our estimate, the median starting burial price across 15 US pet cemeteries is ~$600[6], and a small pet's whole-body burial across five posted price lists comes to ~$350[7], often before any marker. One natural burial ground charges $250 for a boulder headstone, with engraving from $670[8]. A stone for a Sandy garden avoids those extras.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Utah: Utah costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Rules to check before placing a stone in Utah
Public land is where most families run into limits. Parks, beaches and trails almost never allow a personal stone, and scattering ashes there may need permission or be restricted. The usual answer is to scatter or remember your pet at a public spot, then set the stone somewhere private. What we know for Utah is below.
To find your county or city office in Utah, start with the official Utah local government directory.
Home burial and scattering are governed at the Utah level first; our Utah rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Sandy or your HOA adds anything.
How to choose, order and set a pet stone
- Note exactly where the grave is today. Pace it out from two fixed points, such as a fence post and the back step, and take a photo before the soil is raked flat.
- Cover the fresh soil with something heavy and flat, a slab or an overturned pot will do, to stop anything from digging there while the ground firms.
- Leave the permanent stone for a few weeks. In the first days everything seems to need deciding at once; this decision keeps until you've had some proper rest.
- Top up the soil as it sinks. Expect the surface to fall by a few inches at first; fill the dip, tread it down and repeat until it holds.
- Measure the settled patch once it has stopped sinking, then pick a marker broad enough to span nearly all of it, since a covered grave is far less inviting to dig.
- Set the finished stone on gravel over the firmed ground, then check its level again after the first heavy rain.
Remembering your pet beside the stone
Outdoor memorials in Sandy face heavy snow, freeze and thaw, and strong summer sun at more than 4,000 feet. A flat stone set flush with the soil survives shoveling better than a raised plaque, and bronze or granite outlasts painted resin. If you plant a tree in memory, a native or drought-tolerant choice will cope better with watering limits in dry years.

Questions people ask
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Sandy?
January, February and December: average lows are below freezing then, and frozen ground makes a home grave slow or impossible until it thaws. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 94°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Sandy?
The closest communities we cover are Cottonwood Heights (about 3 miles), Midvale (about 4 miles) and Draper (about 5 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Sandy too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Where are the providers that serve Sandy actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Salt Lake City, about 13 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Sandy and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
How many pet owners live in Sandy?
By our estimate, about 34,000 households in Sandy have at least one dog or cat, and around 2,850 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 92,386, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
How long does it take to make a pet memorial stone?
It depends on the maker and the stone. One US maker of engraved natural stones says they arrive in ~1 week[10]; made-to-order granite and bronze pet markers take 2–4 weeks[11]; and a new full-size headstone from a monument company can take 6–12 weeks[12]. Photo stones add time for proof approval.
There's no stone maker in Sandy. What are my options?
Online makers ship small engraved stones almost anywhere, and a larger center such as Salt Lake City usually has a monument company that will cut a pet marker. Many will email a proof so you only make one trip, or deliver on their next run out your way. Ask whether they'll engrave a stone from your own land.
