An outdoor memorial for your pet, made for Roy
By our count, roughly 1,200 Roy families lose a dog or cat every year. A memorial stone is one of the few decisions with no deadline, so here's what to know before you order.
- Wording that fits a small stone
- Flush, raised or with an ashes compartment
- No pressure: a stone can wait until you're ready

Roy, Utah
Pet memorials in Roy: the local picture
Northern Utah's snowy winters and repeated freeze-thaw cycles crack thin concrete and loosen cheap plaques, so outdoor memorials in Roy should be granite, bronze or glazed ceramic. A native shrub such as golden currant, or a hardy old-fashioned lilac, makes a living memorial that blooms each April or May and needs little care once it has had a season or two to settle in.
Roy's older lots often have mature trees and established gardens, a natural spot for a flat memorial stone or a small planting. Newer homes and rentals may call for indoor options instead, such as an urn with a photo, a paw or claw print in clay, or jewelry that holds a pinch of ash. Pick what fits your home now; you can add more later.
Around Roy, the local hardware or farm supply store often sells blank stepping stones and river rocks, and some have paint pens or stencil kits. A homemade stone is a lovely short-term marker and a good project for children. For something permanent, pair it later with a professionally engraved piece of granite that won't fade.
With roughly 38,794 residents, Roy is the 27th-largest of the 52 Utah communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Roy are based about 30 miles away in Salt Lake City, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Our pages for Clinton (2 miles), West Haven (3 miles) and South Ogden (5 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Roy as well.
Our estimate
14,500
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Roy
How we calculated this
38,794 ÷ 2.5 = 15,518 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 14,500. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
1,200
Roy families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
14,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,200 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

Burial, cremation and headstones in Utah
Burial is still the main tradition in Utah, where only about 46.1%[5] of people are cremated. Headstones and family plots are part of everyday life, and that often carries over to pets. Many families here bury their pet whole at home and want a stone that looks and lasts like a proper grave marker, with deep lettering on dense granite.
We take the Utah rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Roy, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Frost, sun and damp: matching stone to Roy
Frozen ground in Roy during January, February, November and December can make digging hard or impossible. If your pet died in winter, a temporary marker and a spring installation are perfectly normal. Many families keep the engraved stone indoors until the ground thaws, which also gives you time to see the proof and check the wording properly.
Roy winters are the real test for a memorial stone. Average lows drop below freezing in January, February, November and December, and every freeze-thaw cycle lets water into porous stone, freeze, expand and pry off flakes, often from the edges of engraved letters first. Dense granite shrugs this off; slate, sandstone, concrete and cast resin can crack within a few winters.

What drives the price of a pet memorial stone
Pet memorial stones cover a wide price range in the US, and the material matters more than the size. Engraved garden stones start at ~$39[6] across three US sellers, while flat granite markers start from $157.95[7] and upright granite headstones run $258–$628[8]. The table shows published prices you can use to judge any quote from a maker serving Roy.

Where a pet stone can go in Utah
If you own your home, you can usually place a garden stone wherever you like; the stricter rules concern burying a body, not marking a spot. If you rent, ask your landlord before burying anything or setting a stone in concrete, and choose a stone you can lift and take with you. Below are the burial and scattering notes we have for Utah.
To find your county or city office in Utah, start with the official Utah local government directory.
The Utah page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Roy's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
From first idea to a stone in the ground
- Work out what the stone is marking: the body itself, ashes in the ground, the place where ashes were scattered, or just a favorite corner of the yard.
- If ashes will go inside the stone, check the cavity size against your pet's ashes with our urn size calculator.
- Choose dense stone and carved lettering. Painted or printed designs look bright on day one but fade outdoors.
- Keep the wording short. On a typical small marker you get two or three lines, each holding around 14 to 16 capitals.
- Get written quotes from a few makers who deliver where you live, and find out how they handle a stone that's chipped in transit.
- Sign off the proof, and think about placement: a bed of gravel underneath, a spirit level on top, and enough distance from trees that roots won't tilt it.
Small rituals that keep the stone meaningful
Many Roy households have a service member or veteran in the family, and some choose memorials in that spirit: a small flag case with a collar and tags, an engraved plaque with the pet's name and dates, or a shadow box built like a medal display. These travel well if orders come through and look at home on any wall.

Questions people ask
Is Roy big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 14,500 Roy households keep a dog or cat and around 1,200 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 38,794), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
Will I have to travel to Salt Lake City to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Salt Lake City (roughly 30 miles from Roy) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
How does Roy's weather affect pet aftercare?
July is the hottest month in Roy, with average highs around 87°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Average lows drop below freezing in January, February, November and December, which can make digging a grave hard until spring.
Is cremation common in Utah?
For people, yes: about 46.1%[5] of Utah deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Roy follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
How many dogs and cats are there in Roy?
By our estimate, about 14,500 households in Roy have a dog or cat, and roughly 1,200 dogs and cats are lost there each year. We calculate this from the city's population, average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures. It's a rough guide to how many families face the same choice as you.
How heavy is a granite pet grave marker?
Granite weighs roughly 165 to 170 lb per cubic foot, so a 12 x 6 inch marker 2 inches thick weighs about 14 lb, and a 16 x 8 inch marker 3 inches thick is close to 40 lb. Upright headstones with a base can weigh well over 100 lb. Heavier pieces usually ship by freight and may be delivered to the curb only.
