Stone makers, yards and delivery in Orem
With Mount Timpanogos in view from much of the city, some Orem families choose a mountain theme for a memorial: an engraved stone with the peak's outline, or a photograph from a favorite trail framed beside the urn. If you hope to scatter ashes in the canyon or on the mountain, check the rules of the agency that manages that land first, and keep clear of streams and busy trailheads.
Student renters, young families and residents who have lived in Orem for decades tend to want very different memorials. A compact photo urn or a keepsake pendant travels easily if you move after graduation. Long-term homeowners sometimes prefer a garden marker under a fruit tree, a nod to the city's orchard past, which can stay with the house even if the ashes are kept indoors.
Delivery to a rural address can add cost and time. Freight carriers sometimes charge extra for residential or remote addresses and may deliver to the end of a long driveway only. When you order for Orem, ask about the delivery method up front, or arrange to collect the stone from a depot or maker in a larger center such as Salt Lake City.
About 95,214 people live in Orem, which makes it the 7th-largest of the 52 Utah communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Orem are based about 34 miles away in Salt Lake City, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Orem sits within easy reach of Provo (5 miles), Pleasant Grove (6 miles) and American Fork (7 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Orem; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.
Our estimate
35,000
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Orem
How we calculated this
95,214 ÷ 2.5 = 38,086 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 35,000. A household with several pets counts once.

What local customs suggest for your pet's stone
In Utah, where about 46.1%[5] of people are cremated, burial remains the usual choice for people, and plenty of pet owners follow suit. A whole-body pet grave needs a larger stone than buried ashes, and the soil takes longer to settle, so wait a month or two before setting a heavy marker and use a gravel base to keep it level.

Orem weather and your pet's stone
Repeated swings between January, February, November and December frost and July heat test anything glued to a stone. Photo plaques, bronze plates and ceramic inserts expand at different rates from granite, and a bond that holds for two years can let go in the third. Ask whether parts are pinned mechanically as well as glued, and whether the maker will re-fix them if they loosen.
Orem gives a memorial stone both extremes: freezing lows in January, February, November and December and summer highs around 95°F in July. That combination rules out most cast resin and painted designs, which crack in the cold and fade in the sun. Granite with deep, carved lettering is the one material that reliably handles both.

Budgeting for the stone, lettering and delivery
Pet cemeteries price very differently from garden stones. By our estimate, the median starting burial price across 15 US pet cemeteries is ~$600[6], and a small pet's whole-body burial across five posted price lists comes to ~$350[7], often before any marker. One natural burial ground charges $250 for a boulder headstone, with engraving from $670[8]. A stone for an Orem garden avoids those extras.

Burial, HOA and cemetery rules in Utah
If you own your home, you can usually place a garden stone wherever you like; the stricter rules concern burying a body, not marking a spot. If you rent, ask your landlord before burying anything or setting a stone in concrete, and choose a stone you can lift and take with you. Below are the burial and scattering notes we have for Utah.
Utah keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Orem.
Start with the Utah rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat Orem's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.
A simple plan for your pet's memorial stone
- Give yourself time. Nobody is waiting on the stone, and newly turned earth needs several weeks to firm up before it will hold something heavy.
- Talk about the words with your family. Children often have the best ideas, and saying the line out loud shows whether it fits.
- Decide how permanent it should be. A marker resting on gravel can come with you to a new home; one bedded in concrete is there for good.
- Order from a maker who sends a proof, and read it on your phone at arm's length, roughly how it will look from the path.
- Choose an installation day with soft ground and good weather, and dig a shallow bed for 3 to 4 inches of gravel.
- Place the stone together. Many families make it a small ceremony, with a story, a favorite toy or a plant.
Keeping the memory close
Dry air, strong sun and long freezing spells are hard on some materials. Anything left outside in Orem faces summer UV and months below 32 degrees, so pick granite, bronze or glazed stoneware for a permanent piece. Indoors the range is wider: wooden boxes, glass art containing a little ash, framed paw prints, or a display case with a collar, tag and favorite toy.

Questions people ask
How does Orem's weather affect pet aftercare?
July is the hottest month in Orem, with average highs around 95°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Average lows drop below freezing in January, February, November and December, which can make digging a grave hard until spring.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Orem?
Usually yes. Provo is about 5 miles away, Pleasant Grove is about 6 miles away and American Fork is about 7 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is Orem big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 35,000 Orem households keep a dog or cat and around 2,900 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 95,214), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
Will I have to travel to Salt Lake City to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Salt Lake City (roughly 34 miles from Orem) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
What size stone suits a cat's grave compared with a dog's?
A cat's grave is small, so a flat stone around 12 by 6 inches, or an engraved river rock, marks it well. A medium or large dog's grave is longer, and many families choose a 16 by 8 inch marker or bigger, set at the head end. Our memorial stone planner helps you check whether the wording fits the size you choose.
What happens to my pet's memorial stone if I move out of Orem?
If it sits on a gravel bed, lift it and take it with you; that's why many families avoid concrete. If ashes are inside the stone, they travel too. If your pet is buried beneath it, many owners take the stone and plant something in its place, and some tell the new owners what the spot means.
