Hurricane, Utah
What getting a pet stone made in Hurricane is like
Many Hurricane residents moved here from other states, which means children and old friends often live hundreds of miles away. If the ashes are to be shared, have the provider split them from the outset or order a family urn along with several tiny keepsakes. Pendants and mini urns travel easily in a carry-on, a real help when relatives visit only once or twice a year.
Southwest Utah's scenery gives memorials a natural theme: a sandstone marker, an urn in a red or ochre glaze, or a keepsake engraved with the outline of the Pine Valley Mountains or the Zion cliffs. You don't need anything elaborate. A simple piece that brings to mind the landscape where you shared your days with your pet is often enough.
Human cemeteries in towns like Hurricane generally don't accept pet burials, though a few have added pet sections or allow ashes in some circumstances. If you want your pet near a family plot, ask the cemetery office directly rather than assuming. Otherwise, a private stone on family land or at a regional pet cemetery is the usual route.
Hurricane is home to about 25,745 people, the 40th-largest of the 52 Utah communities we cover.
Nearby, we also have local pages for Washington (7 miles), St. George (13 miles, a larger centre) and Cedar City (40 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.
Our estimate
9,450
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Hurricane
How we calculated this
25,745 ÷ 2.5 = 10,298 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 9,450. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
790
Hurricane families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
9,450 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 790 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.

Grave or ashes? The local habit in Utah
With about 46.1%[5] of people in Utah cremated, visiting a grave on anniversaries is a strong local habit. A pet's stone often becomes part of that ritual: a place to leave flowers, clear leaves and sit for a minute. If that sounds like you, choose a spot you can reach easily in every season, not just the prettiest corner of the yard.
The Utah percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Hurricane, not as a count of pets.
When to install, and what the seasons do to stone
Photo stones need a little thought in a sunny place like Hurricane. Laser-etched portraits on black granite read best in soft light and can disappear in full midday glare, which is at its fiercest around July. Angle the stone slightly away from the afternoon sun or put it where a shrub throws some shade, and choose a crisp, high-contrast photo.
Hurricane summers are hard on outdoor memorials: July averages highs around 100°F. Strong sun bleaches cast resin, fades painted lettering and dries out the sealant around ashes compartments. Granite and natural stone with carved letters are the safe choice. Painted fill in the letters will need touching up every few years; carved depth won't.

Budgeting for the stone, lettering and delivery
Lead times vary more than prices. Natural engraved stones from one US maker arrive in ~1 week[6], made-to-order granite and bronze markers take 2–4 weeks[7], and a new full-size headstone from a monument company can take 6–12 weeks[8]. If you want the stone in place for an anniversary in Hurricane, order well ahead.

Permissions worth checking in Utah
Burying a pet on land that belongs to someone else, such as a parent's farm or a friend's garden, needs the owner's clear agreement, and it's wise to note the spot for whoever owns the land next. The stone itself is usually the easy part. Our local notes on burial and scattering in Utah follow.
Utah keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Hurricane.
We keep Utah's burial and scattering rules in one place: the Utah rules summary. Before a home burial in Hurricane, also ask the city whether local ordinances add anything.
From first idea to a stone in the ground
- Work out what the stone is marking: the body itself, ashes in the ground, the place where ashes were scattered, or just a favorite corner of the yard.
- If ashes will go inside the stone, run the cavity's dimensions through our urn size calculator to be sure everything will fit.
- Choose dense stone and carved lettering. Painted or printed designs look bright on day one but fade outdoors.
- Keep the wording short. Most small stones fit two or three lines of 14 to 16 capital letters.
- Get written quotes from makers who serve your area, and ask what happens if the stone arrives damaged.
- Sign off the proof, and think about placement: a bed of gravel underneath, a spirit level on top, and enough distance from trees that roots won't tilt it.
Keeping the memory close
Intense sun, heat above 100 degrees and sudden late-summer monsoon storms are hard on outdoor memorials. Resin fades and cracks, and dark metal gets too hot to touch by midday. Native stone, granite and bronze last longer, especially set in partial shade. Indoors, any sealed container is fine, so choose based on what you like to look at every day.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Hurricane?
Usually yes. Washington is about 7 miles away, St. George is about 13 miles away and Cedar City is about 40 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is Hurricane big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 9,450 Hurricane households keep a dog or cat and around 790 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 25,745), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Hurricane?
January and December: average lows are below freezing then, and frozen ground makes a home grave slow or impossible until it thaws. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 100°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
How do Utah attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Utah human cremation rate at about 46.1%[5]. We show it on the Hurricane page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Does my HOA need to approve a pet memorial stone in Hurricane?
Usually not for a small stone in a backyard bed, but read your covenants. Some associations restrict permanent features, anything set in concrete or anything visible from the street. A flush marker or engraved garden stone in the back is the least likely to raise questions; an upright headstone in the front yard is the most.
What happens to my pet's memorial stone if I move out of Hurricane?
If it sits on a gravel bed, lift it and take it with you; that's why many families avoid concrete. If ashes are inside the stone, they travel too. If your pet is buried beneath it, many owners take the stone and plant something in its place, and some tell the new owners what the spot means.
