Where a stone can go in Bountiful
Many Bountiful families have lived in one house for decades, and the garden may already hold markers for animals who came before. Setting a new stone beside the older ones can feel like adding a name to a family record. Households in newer homes or apartments can do the same indoors with an urn and photo on the mantel, or a pendant holding a pinch of ash.
The view from Bountiful's benches, across the valley to the Great Salt Lake and Antelope Island, is part of what home means for many residents. A print of that view at dusk, or of a favorite switchback in Mueller Park, pairs naturally with an urn. If you would like to scatter some ashes on public land, confirm the rules with whoever manages it before heading out.
Around Bountiful, the local hardware or farm supply store often sells blank stepping stones and river rocks, and some have paint pens or stencil kits. A homemade stone is a lovely short-term marker and a good project for children. For something permanent, pair it later with a professionally engraved piece of granite that won't fade.
About 44,988 people live in Bountiful, which makes it the 22nd-largest of the 52 Utah communities we cover. Salt Lake City, roughly 8 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Bountiful run from there.
Nearby, we also have local pages for North Salt Lake (3 miles), Salt Lake City (8 miles, a larger centre) and Farmington (8 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.
Our estimate
16,500
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Bountiful
How we calculated this
44,988 ÷ 2.5 = 17,995 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 16,500. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate

How Utah remembers its dead, and its pets
Family headstones matter in Utah; cremation there covers only about 46.1%[5] of human deaths, and some owners like a pet's stone to echo them. Ask a monument maker for the same granite color and a similar typeface as a grandparent's marker. On a much smaller scale it reads as part of the family, which is exactly how many people see their pet.
For the Utah figure we rely on NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Bountiful rather than as pet data.
Choosing a stone that suits Bountiful's seasons
Frozen ground in Bountiful during January, February, November and December can make digging hard or impossible. If your pet died in winter, a temporary marker and a spring installation are perfectly normal. Many families keep the engraved stone indoors until the ground thaws, which also gives you time to see the proof and check the wording properly.
Snow and salt are both hard on stone in Bountiful. A flush marker disappears under snow from January, February, November and December, so add a small stake or a tall plant nearby if you want to find it easily. Keep de-icing salt away from the memorial: salt draws water into stone and speeds up flaking, especially on limestone, marble and concrete.

What drives the price of a pet memorial stone
Pet memorial stones cover a wide price range in the US, and the material matters more than the size. Engraved garden stones start at ~$39[6] across three US sellers, while flat granite markers start from $157.95[7] and upright granite headstones run $258–$628[8]. The table shows published prices you can use to judge any quote from a maker serving Bountiful.

What Utah allows for pet graves and markers
Public land is where most families run into limits. Parks, beaches and trails almost never allow a personal stone, and scattering ashes there may need permission or be restricted. The usual answer is to scatter or remember your pet at a public spot, then set the stone somewhere private. What we know for Utah is below.
To find your county or city office in Utah, start with the official Utah local government directory.
The rules that apply across Utah (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Utah page. Bountiful may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
A step-by-step plan for your situation
- Decide how much of the ashes belongs with the stone: all of them sealed inside, a small portion buried beneath, or none, with the stone simply marking a place your pet loved.
- If the stone will hold ashes, ask the maker for the cavity's volume and set it against the size of the bag or box that came back from the crematory. Our urn size calculator gives a rough figure for how much room the ashes take.
- Keep the ashes in a sealed waterproof pouch inside the cavity, because loose ashes draw in moisture and clump.
- Place the stone as soon as it arrives if you like. With no grave to settle, many families time it for a birthday or the first warm weekend.
- Pick a spot that stays yours, a corner of the patio or a big pot, for instance, if moving house is a possibility.
- Write down what's inside the stone and file the note with your important documents, so a future owner or relative doesn't treat it as decoration.
Keeping the memory close
Bountiful's east winds can topple fences and trees, so outdoor memorials here need to be low and solid. A flat granite marker set flush in the ground, or a bronze plaque fixed to a rock, will stay put where a small statue might not. Wind chimes and hanging ornaments are better indoors or in a sheltered corner of a porch.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to Salt Lake City to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Salt Lake City (roughly 8 miles from Bountiful) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Does the Bountiful climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 87°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, November and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Bountiful?
The closest communities we cover are North Salt Lake (about 3 miles), Salt Lake City (about 8 miles) and Farmington (about 8 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Bountiful too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
How do Utah attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Utah human cremation rate at about 46.1%[5]. We show it on the Bountiful page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Do many families in Bountiful choose a memorial stone?
We don't track local sales, but the numbers suggest plenty do. By our estimate, around 1,400 dogs and cats die in Bountiful each year, from about 16,500 dog- or cat-owning households, and a large share of US owners say they'd prefer home burial (40.4% cremation; 34.9% home burial; 1.9% aquamation[10] in one survey). Many of those graves end up marked with a stone.
How do I set a memorial stone so it stays level?
Dig a shallow bed slightly larger than the stone, add 2 to 4 inches of gravel, tamp it firm and level it with a board and a spirit level. Settle the stone on top and check again. For a lawn, set it flush with the grass so a mower can pass over. Heavy upright stones need a proper footing.
