Local makers and practical limits in Findlay
Findlay families who lived through the Blanchard River floods often think carefully about where a memorial will sit. An urn on an upper floor shelf, cremation jewelry, or a keepsake that can be picked up quickly are all sensible choices for a house near the river. For a garden marker, a spot on higher ground in the yard keeps it out of reach of standing water.
Findlay calls itself Flag City, USA, and many homes fly a flag on the porch. Some families like to echo that civic pride in a memorial, with a bronze tag at the foot of the flagpole, or a photo in a frame beside the front window. Bronze and granite both hold up to northwest Ohio's winters far better than resin.
Some families around Findlay use a stone from their own land. A smooth fieldstone or a rock from the creek bed where your dog swam can be engraved by many monument shops, as long as the face is dense enough to hold lettering. It costs less than a new stone and it already belongs to the place.
Findlay is home to about 40,370 people, the 32nd-largest of the 106 Ohio communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Toledo, about 42 miles (68 km) away, which is where some providers serving Findlay are based.
Families in Findlay often end up using a provider from Bowling Green (23 miles), Tiffin (24 miles) and Lima (33 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.
Our estimate
15,000
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Findlay
How we calculated this
40,370 ÷ 2.5 = 16,148 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 15,000. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
1,250
Estimated dog and cat losses in Findlay each year
How we calculated this
15,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,250 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

Grave or ashes? The local habit in Ohio
With about 59.1%[5] of people in Ohio cremated, local monument companies still make plenty of headstones, which is good news for pet owners. Their skills and equipment are right there, and many will take on a small pet marker. Ask one that makes human memorials locally; they'll know which granites cope with the local winters.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Ohio figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Findlay tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Choosing a stone that suits Findlay's seasons
Findlay winters are the real test for a memorial stone. Average lows drop below freezing in January, February, March and December, and every freeze-thaw cycle lets water into porous stone, freeze, expand and pry off flakes, often from the edges of engraved letters first. Dense granite shrugs this off; slate, sandstone, concrete and cast resin can crack within a few winters.
Cold snaps in Findlay, when lows average around 19°F in January, can crack stones that hold water. Stones with an ashes cavity need a good seal so water doesn't collect inside and freeze. If yours has a screw plate or plug, check it in the fall, and ask the maker whether the stone is rated for outdoor use in freezing climates.

Budgeting for the stone, lettering and delivery
Pet memorial stones cover a wide price range in the US, and the material matters more than the size. Engraved garden stones start at ~$39[6] across three US sellers, while flat granite markers start from $157.95[7] and upright granite headstones run $258–$628[8]. The table shows published prices you can use to judge any quote from a maker serving Findlay.

Rules to check before placing a stone in Ohio
Three sets of rules decide where a pet memorial stone can go in Ohio: the public rules on burying a pet, private rules from your homeowners' association, landlord or strata, and the marker rules of any pet cemetery. A stone over buried ashes or in a planter usually raises no issue at all; a whole-body grave and an upright headstone raise the most questions.
To find your county or city office in Ohio, start with the official Ohio local government directory.
The Ohio page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Findlay's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
What to do first, and what can wait
- Decide whether each pet gets its own stone or they share one. Several small stones in a matching set look right along a walkway, while a single bigger marker carrying all the names takes up less space.
- If you expect to add names later, leave space on purpose. Ask the maker to put the first name on the top line and keep the lower part blank.
- Stay with one maker where you can, and note down which stone, which font and what size of lettering was used, so the next name can be matched exactly.
- Ask now what a second inscription will cost and find out if the engraver can work on the stone where it sits or needs it returned to the shop.
- Leave enough room between graves that stones don't crowd each other, and sketch a simple plan showing who rests where.
- Set every stone at the same height on the same gravel base, which keeps the row level as it beds in and lets you mow straight over without catching an edge.
Making the stone a place to visit
In farm families around Findlay, memorials are often practical and grounded: a fieldstone hauled up from the creek bank and lettered by hand, a sapling set beside the fence row, or a pinch of ashes scattered over a favorite field. Indoors, a simple wooden urn on a shelf is common. Brothers and sisters living in other states can each receive a spoonful in a tiny urn.

Questions people ask
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Findlay?
January, February, March and December: average lows are below freezing then, and frozen ground makes a home grave slow or impossible until it thaws. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 84°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Will I have to travel to Toledo to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Toledo (roughly 42 miles from Findlay) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
How do Ohio attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Ohio human cremation rate at about 59.1%[5]. We show it on the Findlay page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Findlay?
Usually yes. Bowling Green is about 23 miles away, Tiffin is about 24 miles away and Lima is about 33 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How many words fit on a small pet memorial stone?
Less than most people expect. As a rough guide, a 12-inch-wide stone with 1-inch capital letters fits about 14 to 16 characters per line once margins are allowed for, and most small stones take two to four lines. A name, the years and one short line is the classic layout. Our memorial stone planner previews it for you.
What does a pet cemetery plot cost compared with a garden stone?
A lot more. In a sample of 15 US pet cemeteries, a typical burial cost $1,500–$2,000[10], and ongoing care can add more; one New York cemetery charges $105/yr or $3,500[11] for upkeep. A garden stone at home costs only the stone and delivery, starting at ~$39[6] for an engraved garden stone.
