Apex, North Carolina

Stone makers, yards and delivery in Apex

HOA rules in Apex subdivisions sometimes limit what can go in a front yard, but they rarely touch the back garden or the inside of your home. A flat engraved stone in a flower bed, a memorial bench on a patio, or a framed paw print in the hallway are all options that usually avoid covenant trouble. Ask your HOA if you are unsure.

Many Apex households have moved here in the last decade or two and may move again, so portable memorials make sense. A good-sized urn for the bookshelf, a small keepsake for a relative, or jewelry holding a little ash can all travel. A garden stone or tree is lovely if you plan to stay, but think about whether you would want to leave it behind.

Some families around Apex use a stone from their own land. A smooth fieldstone or a rock from the creek bed where your dog swam can be engraved by many monument shops, as long as the face is dense enough to hold lettering. It costs less than a new stone and it already belongs to the place.

With roughly 80,419 residents, Apex is the 14th-largest of the 64 North Carolina communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Apex are based about 14 miles away in Raleigh, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.

Nearby, we also have local pages for Cary (5 miles, a larger centre), Holly Springs (5 miles) and Morrisville (8 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.

Our estimate

29,500

How many dog- or cat-owning households Apex has (estimate)

How we calculated this

80,419 ÷ 2.5 = 32,168 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 29,500. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.

Our estimate

2,450

dog and cat deaths per year in Apex, our estimate

How we calculated this

29,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 2,450 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

53%[1]

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.

12.69 years[2]

US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.

39%[3]

39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.

11.18 years[4]

US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

Grave or ashes? The local habit in North Carolina

Even with cremation at roughly 57.3%[5] of human deaths in North Carolina, local churchyards and cemeteries are full of short, formal inscriptions. Some families like that tone for a pet: a full name and two dates. Others want the nickname, the squeaky toy and a joke only the family gets. Both are right, and the stone is small enough to say only one thing well.

We take the North Carolina rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Apex, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.

Apex weather and your pet's stone

Apex summers are hard on outdoor memorials: July averages highs around 91°F. Strong sun bleaches cast resin, fades painted lettering and dries out the sealant around ashes compartments. Granite and natural stone with carved letters are the safe choice. Painted fill in the letters will need touching up every few years; carved depth won't.

Photo stones need a little thought in a sunny place like Apex. Laser-etched portraits on black granite read best in soft light and can disappear in full midday glare, which is at its fiercest around July. Angle the stone slightly away from the afternoon sun or put it where a shrub throws some shade, and choose a crisp, high-contrast photo.

What drives the price of a pet memorial stone

Pet memorial stones cover a wide price range in the US, and the material matters more than the size. Engraved garden stones start at ~$39[6] across three US sellers, while flat granite markers start from $157.95[7] and upright granite headstones run $258–$628[8]. Home burial, rentals and pet cemeteries in North Carolina

Public land is where most families run into limits. Parks, beaches and trails almost never allow a personal stone, and scattering ashes there may need permission or be restricted. The usual answer is to scatter or remember your pet at a public spot, then set the stone somewhere private. What we know for North Carolina is below.

Not sure which office covers Apex? The North Carolina local government directory is the official list.

The North Carolina page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Apex's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.

A simple plan for your pet's memorial stone

  1. Mark the spot simply for now. While the soil is still sinking and the words aren't settled, something temporary, like a paver, a pot or a circle of pebbles, is enough to show where your pet rests.
  2. Decide where the stone will live long term: your garden, a pet cemetery, a planter or somewhere that can move with you.
  3. Choose the material for your climate. Where winters bite and summers scorch, granite holds up; in gentler, drier places slate or a river rock does fine.
  4. Write the wording and count the letters. Name, years and one short line fit most small stones. Our memorial stone planner checks the fit.
  5. Ask two or three makers for written quotes and make sure each total covers the engraving, a photo if you want one, shipping and installation.
  6. Approve a proof before anything is cut. Check spelling with someone else in the house.
  7. Set the stone on compacted gravel so that water moves away and the marker sits straight; a plant alongside is a nice touch.

Making the stone a place to visit

Jordan Lake lies a short drive west of Apex, and the American Tobacco Trail runs through the area, so outdoor places with personal meaning are close. If you scatter ashes somewhere public, choose a quiet moment, keep it discreet, and check the managing agency's guidance. Keeping a small portion back for a keepsake at home gives you something to hold on later anniversaries.

Questions people ask

Why does the Apex page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 57.3%[5] of North Carolina residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

Will I have to travel to Raleigh to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in Raleigh (roughly 14 miles from Apex) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Apex?

Usually yes. Cary is about 5 miles away, Holly Springs is about 5 miles away and Morrisville is about 8 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

How many pet owners live in Apex?

By our estimate, about 29,500 households in Apex have at least one dog or cat, and around 2,450 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 80,419, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.

Can I have my pet's photo etched onto a stone?

Yes. Makers use a laser on polished black granite to create a gray-scale portrait. Results depend on the picture: send the original file, taken in daylight, with your pet looking toward the camera. Dark pets on dark backgrounds and pale pets on pale ones lose their outline, so ask for background removal and approve a proof.

How much does a pet memorial stone cost in Apex?

Published US prices give a good guide. Engraved garden stones start at ~$39[6], natural engraved river stones run $38–$115[10], flat granite markers start from $157.95[7] and upright granite headstones cost $258–$628[8] (per one large retailer). Delivery, a photo and cemetery setting fees are extra, so ask Apex makers for a written total.
