An outdoor memorial for your pet, made for Elko

Elko, Nevada

Local makers and practical limits in Elko

Cold winters, blazing summer sun and dry wind take a toll on anything left outdoors in northeast Nevada. Choose granite or fieldstone, which weather for decades, over resin and painted pieces that peel. Bed the marker on tamped gravel so frost can't tip it. Glass, ceramic and wooden keepsakes last longest on a shelf indoors, away from the weather and the dust.

Memorials in Elko often reflect the town's ranching and Basque heritage: a granite marker on the ranch, a hand-tooled leather box or small urn on the mantel, a silver keepsake worn every day, maybe engraved with a brand. No decision is needed right away. The crematory's temporary box is sturdy, so families can wait until relatives come home or the snow melts.

Some families around Elko use a stone from their own land. A smooth fieldstone or a rock from the creek bed where your dog swam can be engraved by many monument shops, as long as the face is dense enough to hold lettering. It costs less than a new stone and it already belongs to the place.

With roughly 21,019 residents, Elko is the 9th-largest of the 11 Nevada communities we cover.

Our estimate

7,750

How many dog- or cat-owning households Elko has (estimate)

How we calculated this

21,019 ÷ 2.5 = 8,408 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 7,750. Multi-pet homes count once.

Our estimate

640

Estimated dog and cat losses in Elko each year

How we calculated this

7,750 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 640 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

53%[1]

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.

12.69 years[2]

US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.

39%[3]

39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.

11.18 years[4]

US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

How local customs shape pet memorials

In places where cremation is as common as it is in Nevada, where about 80.7%[5] of people are cremated, ashes give families more freedom. A stone doesn't have to sit over a grave. It can mark a scattering spot, hold a portion of ashes in a cavity or stand in a patio planter, and it can move with you when you do.

Direct Cremate (citing CANA) (2024) is where the Nevada figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Elko tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.

Elko weather and your pet's stone

Seasonal extremes in Elko mean plantings beside a stone have to be hardy both ways. A small shrub that survives January, February, March, April, October, November and December frost and July heat will soften the look of a new marker. Our memorial tree finder suggests trees and shrubs by climate if you'd like something living beside the stone.

Elko gives a memorial stone both extremes: freezing lows in January, February, March, April, October, November and December and summer highs around 92°F in July. That combination rules out most cast resin and painted designs, which crack in the cold and fade in the sun. Granite with deep, carved lettering is the one material that reliably handles both.

How much to budget for a pet stone

If you want a picture on the stone, budget for it separately. A laser-etched portrait on a full headstone costs about $500–$800[6] from monument engravers, while small photo-etched granite pet markers from online makers start from $159.99[7]. Ask makers serving Elko for a proof before they etch, and compare total prices including delivery.

The Nevada price table breaks costs down by product; our services page explains what sits behind each line.

What Nevada allows for pet graves and markers

Rules about marking a pet's grave are light almost everywhere; the rules that matter are about the grave itself. Depth, distance from water and whether you own the land come up most often. If burial at home isn't allowed or practical, a stone can still mark buried ashes, a scattering spot or simply a favorite corner. Local notes for Nevada follow.

The official Nevada local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Elko.

Home burial and scattering are governed at the Nevada level first; our Nevada rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Elko or your HOA adds anything.

How to choose, order and set a pet stone

  1. Note exactly where the grave is today. Pace it out from two fixed points, such as a fence post and the back step, and take a photo before the soil is raked flat.
  2. Cover the fresh soil with something heavy and flat, like a paving slab or an upturned planter, so digging animals leave it alone while it settles.
  3. Leave the permanent stone for a few weeks. In the first days everything seems to need deciding at once; this decision keeps until you've had some proper rest.
  4. Top up the soil as it sinks. Expect the surface to fall by a few inches at first; fill the dip, tread it down and repeat until it holds.
  5. Measure the settled patch and choose a stone wide enough to cover most of it, which also discourages anything from digging there later.
  6. Set the finished stone on gravel over the firmed ground, and once a good downpour has been through, put a level on it a second time.

Around the stone: plants, benches and small rituals

Mining jobs bring people to Elko from all over, and many families have relatives scattered across the West. Splitting up the ashes means a small urn can go to one person, jewelry to another, and a portion can be saved for the ranch or a canyon in the Rubies. Providers can usually prepare separate containers if you ask when booking.

Questions people ask

Does the Elko climate change what I should do first?

Only the timing. In July, with highs near 92°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March, April, October, November and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.

How many pet owners live in Elko?

By our estimate, about 7,750 households in Elko have at least one dog or cat, and around 640 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 21,019, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.

Is cremation common in Nevada?

For people, yes: about 80.7%[5] of Nevada deaths end in cremation, according to Direct Cremate (citing CANA) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Elko follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

What happens to my pet's memorial stone if I move out of Elko?

If it sits on a gravel bed, lift it and take it with you; that's why many families avoid concrete. If ashes are inside the stone, they travel too. If your pet is buried beneath it, many owners take the stone and plant something in its place, and some tell the new owners what the spot means.

Will a slate pet memorial crack in the Elko winter?

It might. Slate is layered, and in places where average lows stay below freezing for months, water can work between the layers and split it. If you love the look of slate, fix it to a wall or fence, keep it off wet soil, or bring it into a porch for January, February, March, April, October, November and December. Granite is the safer outdoor choice.

What does a pet cemetery plot cost compared with a garden stone?

A lot more. In a sample of 15 US pet cemeteries, a typical burial cost $1,500–$2,000[9], and ongoing care can add more; one New York cemetery charges $105/yr or $3,500[10] for upkeep. A garden stone at home costs only the stone and delivery, starting at ~$39[8] for an engraved garden stone.
