Republic, Missouri
Where a stone can go in Republic
Some of Republic's newer subdivisions restrict yard décor through their HOA covenants, so read those before putting up a statue or upright stone. A flat marker in a flower bed, an engraved stepping stone or a memorial planter rarely causes issues. Indoors, an urn, jewelry or a framed paw print avoids any question. There's no rush; ashes keep safely in their original container.
A lot of Republic households grew up around Springfield and still have parents, siblings and grown children within a half-hour drive. Dividing the ashes means each of them can keep a portion in a small urn or pendant. Others plant a tree or a perennial bed as a living memorial, one that fills out along with a young neighborhood where the saplings are still staked and the shade has yet to arrive.
Proofs matter even more when the maker is far away. If you order online or through a monument shop in a larger center such as Republic, ask for a digital proof showing the exact letters, spacing and any picture, and check it on your phone at arm's length. Spelling mistakes can't be sanded out of granite, and a return trip is a long drive.
With roughly 22,404 residents, Republic is the 34th-largest of the 43 Missouri communities we cover.
Our pages for Springfield (7 miles, a larger centre), Nixa (11 miles) and Ozark (14 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Republic as well.
Our estimate
8,250
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Republic
How we calculated this
22,404 ÷ 2.5 = 8,962 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 8,250. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
690
Estimated dog and cat losses in Republic each year
How we calculated this
8,250 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 690 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

How local customs shape pet memorials
Even with cremation at roughly 59.8%[5] of human deaths in Missouri, local churchyards and cemeteries are full of short, formal inscriptions. Some families like that tone for a pet: a full name and two dates. Others want the nickname, the squeaky toy and a joke only the family gets. Both are right, and the stone is small enough to say only one thing well.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Missouri figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Republic tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Republic weather and your pet's stone
Seasonal extremes in Republic mean plantings beside a stone have to be hardy both ways. A small shrub that survives January, February and December frost and July heat will soften the look of a new marker. Our memorial tree finder suggests trees and shrubs by climate if you'd like something living beside the stone.
Big seasonal swings move the ground. In Republic, soil freezes and swells in winter, then bakes and shrinks in summer, and both can tip a stone set straight onto dirt. A bed of 3 to 4 inches of compacted gravel under the stone is the simplest fix; for anything heavier, ask the maker about a small concrete footing.

What drives the price of a pet memorial stone
Pet memorial stones cover a wide price range in the US, and the material matters more than the size. Engraved garden stones start at ~$39[6] across three US sellers, while flat granite markers start from $157.95[7] and upright granite headstones run $258–$628[8]. The table shows published prices you can use to judge any quote from a maker serving Republic.

Home burial, rentals and pet cemeteries in Missouri
Public land is where most families run into limits. Parks, beaches and trails almost never allow a personal stone, and scattering ashes there may need permission or be restricted. The usual answer is to scatter or remember your pet at a public spot, then set the stone somewhere private. What we know for Missouri is below.

Home burial and scattering are governed at the Missouri level first; our Missouri rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Republic or your HOA adds anything.
From first idea to a stone in the ground
- Work out what the stone is marking: a grave, buried ashes, a scattering spot or simply a place your pet loved.
- If ashes will go inside the stone, check the cavity size against your pet's ashes with our urn size calculator.
- Choose dense stone and carved lettering. Anything painted or printed onto the surface looks sharp when new and dulls after a few seasons of sun and rain.
- Keep the wording short. Most small stones fit two or three lines of 14 to 16 capital letters.
- Get written quotes from makers who serve your area, and ask what happens if the stone arrives damaged.
- Sign off the proof, then plan the setting: gravel bed, level, and a gap from tree trunks so roots don't lift it.
Around the stone: plants, benches and small rituals
Springtime in southwest Missouri means soaking storms, and the long humid summers that follow encourage lichen and mildew on anything left outside. Granite and bronze shrug that off far better than resin or cast concrete, particularly when set on packed gravel that lets water drain. If your new lot slopes toward a drainage swale, choose the higher ground. Keepsakes kept indoors need no weather protection whatsoever.

Questions people ask
How does Republic's weather affect pet aftercare?
July is the hottest month in Republic, with average highs around 90°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Average lows drop below freezing in January, February and December, which can make digging a grave hard until spring.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Republic?
Usually yes. Springfield is about 7 miles away, Nixa is about 11 miles away and Ozark is about 14 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Roughly how many pets die in Republic each year?
Our estimate is around 690. It comes from Republic's population (about 22,404), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 8,250 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
How do Missouri attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Missouri human cremation rate at about 59.8%[5]. We show it on the Republic page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Will a slate pet memorial crack in the Republic winter?
It might. Slate is layered, and in places where average lows stay below freezing for months, water can work between the layers and split it. If you love the look of slate, fix it to a wall or fence, keep it off wet soil, or bring it into a porch for January, February and December. Granite is the safer outdoor choice.
Can a memorial stone hold my pet's ashes?
Yes. Some stones have a hollow underside sealed with a plug, or a cavity behind a screwed plate. Check the stated capacity: ashes typically weigh about 3-5% of body weight[10], so a large dog may need more space than most garden stones offer. A waterproof inner bag protects the ashes from damp.
