Marking your pet's resting place in Detroit
By our count, roughly 20,000 Detroit families lose a dog or cat every year. A memorial stone is one of the few decisions with no deadline, so here's what to know before you order.

Detroit, Michigan
Where a stone can go in Detroit
Belle Isle, the Riverwalk along the Detroit River and the trails of Rouge Park are places many Detroit families shared with their pets. State and city rules apply to scattering ashes in parks and on the river, so look into them first. Planting a tree over a bio urn in your backyard, or setting a garden stone where your pet liked to sit, creates a spot that stays with the house.
Detroit has a proud tradition of art and craft, from murals to ceramic tile, and plenty of local artists take commissions for custom urns, painted portraits or engraved plaques. Keepsake jewelry and small boxes are easy to share with siblings who have moved to other states. Many families end up with a mix: one urn at home and smaller keepsakes spread across the family.
Community gardens and allotments are precious in a city like Detroit, and some owners hope to bury a pet or set a stone in their plot. Most garden rules forbid burials and permanent fixtures because plots change hands. Ask the garden's coordinator; a small movable engraved rock in a container is sometimes allowed when a grave isn't.
With roughly 649,095 residents, Detroit is the largest of the 63 Michigan communities we cover.
Nearby, we also have local pages for Hamtramck (4 miles), Dearborn (7 miles) and Grosse Pointe (8 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.
Our estimate
240,000
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Detroit
How we calculated this
649,095 ÷ 2.5 = 259,638 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 240,000. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
20,000
dog and cat deaths per year in Detroit, our estimate
How we calculated this
240,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 20,000 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.
53%[1]
53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
39%[3]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[4]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

How Michigan remembers its dead, and its pets
As cremation has grown to about 69.5%[5] of deaths in Michigan, many pet cemeteries have added small plots just for ashes. These usually take a smaller flat marker than a full grave and cost less to open. If a cemetery appeals but a whole plot feels like too much, ask whether it has an ashes section and what size stone it allows there.
We take the Michigan rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Detroit, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Choosing a stone that suits Detroit's seasons
Engraving depth matters most where winters are long. In Detroit, with freezing lows through January, February, March and December, ice sits in shallow letters and slowly softens their edges. Ask for sandblasted lettering at least an eighth of an inch deep on granite, avoid painted-only designs, and read our guide to outdoor stone grade and engraving depth before you order.
Order in winter and set in spring is a good rhythm for Detroit. Mortar and construction adhesive don't cure properly in the cold, and January lows around 19°F are far below what they need. If your stone has a separate base or a glued plaque, ask the maker to assemble it in the workshop rather than on a cold day in your yard.

Stone, engraving and setting: the real prices
Pet cemeteries price very differently from garden stones. By our estimate, the median starting burial price across 15 US pet cemeteries is ~$600[6], and a small pet's whole-body burial across five posted price lists comes to ~$350[7], often before any marker. One natural burial ground charges $250 for a boulder headstone, with engraving from $670[8]. A stone for a Detroit garden avoids those extras.
We keep the detailed Michigan price table on one page so it stays current: see Michigan prices.

Where a pet stone can go in Michigan
Rules about marking a pet's grave are light almost everywhere; the rules that matter are about the grave itself. Depth, distance from water and whether you own the land come up most often. If burial at home isn't allowed or practical, a stone can still mark buried ashes, a scattering spot or simply a favorite corner. Local notes for Michigan follow.
For what Detroit itself says, see City of Detroit Department of Public Works. Its pages cover municipal collection; a private cremation is arranged separately. The official Michigan local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Detroit.
We keep Michigan's burial and scattering rules in one place: the Michigan rules summary. Before a home burial in Detroit, also ask the city whether local ordinances add anything.
A simple plan for your pet's memorial stone
- Check the rules before you buy. Pet cemeteries usually have their own limits on markers, so ask first; for a stone at home, read your lease or HOA covenants.
- Measure the space. Write down how wide the bed is, which way the mower runs and the angle you'll most often view it from.
- Pick a size and style: a flat flush marker suits grass, a raised one suits a border, an upright one looks like a classic headstone, and a hollow one can keep ashes inside.
- Choose a photo if you want one. Send the full-size original, shot outdoors in natural light, where the face takes up most of the picture.
- Compare a local monument company with an online maker. Get the same four things from both: which stone they use, how deep they cut the letters, how long it takes and what it costs all in.
- Plan delivery and lifting. A granite stone can weigh enough that the freight driver leaves it at the roadside, so have a second pair of hands or a dolly ready.
More ways to remember your pet in Detroit
Detroit homes range from brick bungalows with small backyards to converted lofts downtown, so memorial choices vary. A small urn on the mantel, a pendant holding a trace of ash, a clay paw impression or an engraved stone all fit. Anything that will sit outside needs to survive Michigan freeze and thaw, so choose granite, metal or glazed ceramic over painted wood or resin.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Michigan?
For people, yes: about 69.5%[5] of Michigan deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Detroit follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
How does Detroit's weather affect pet aftercare?
July is the hottest month in Detroit, with average highs around 84°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Average lows drop below freezing in January, February, March and December, which can make digging a grave hard until spring.
How many pet owners live in Detroit?
By our estimate, about 240,000 households in Detroit have at least one dog or cat, and around 20,000 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 649,095, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Detroit?
The closest communities we cover are Hamtramck (about 4 miles), Dearborn (about 7 miles) and Grosse Pointe (about 8 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Detroit too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Where can I place a pet memorial if I live in an apartment in Detroit?
Indoors or on a balcony works well: a small engraved stone in a planter, a slate plaque on a shelf or a stone with an ashes compartment you can later move outdoors. Some families place a stone at a relative's garden or a pet cemetery. Public parks almost never allow personal stones.
What size stone suits a cat's grave compared with a dog's?
A cat's grave is small, so a flat stone around 12 by 6 inches, or an engraved river rock, marks it well. A medium or large dog's grave is longer, and many families choose a 16 by 8 inch marker or bigger, set at the head end. Our memorial stone planner helps you check whether the wording fits the size you choose.
