New Iberia, Louisiana
Local makers and practical limits in New Iberia
Plenty of New Iberia households have gardens full of azaleas, camellias and live oaks, which can make a natural home for a memorial stone or planted urn. If your yard sits low, consider a raised bed or a marker on a slight rise, because standing water after storms is common here. An indoor urn or keepsake box is always a safe alternative.
Acadiana families often care for graves with real devotion, whitewashing tombs and bringing flowers around All Saints' Day. Some people in New Iberia carry that into how they remember an animal, with a small shrine on a shelf or a keepsake visited on a special date. Splitting ashes among relatives, or turning a pinch into jewelry, lets everyone share in that remembering.
Delivery to a rural address can add cost and time. Freight carriers sometimes charge extra for residential or remote addresses and may deliver to the end of a long driveway only. When you order for New Iberia, ask about the delivery method up front, or arrange to collect the stone from a depot or maker in a larger center such as Baton Rouge.
About 26,533 people live in New Iberia, which makes it the 13th-largest of the 17 Louisiana communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Baton Rouge, about 48 miles (78 km) away, which is where some providers serving New Iberia are based.
Our pages for Youngsville (12 miles), Lafayette (19 miles, a larger centre) and Baton Rouge (49 miles, a larger centre) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers New Iberia as well.
Our estimate
9,750
New Iberia: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
26,533 ÷ 2.5 = 10,613 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 9,750. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
810
dog and cat deaths per year in New Iberia, our estimate
How we calculated this
9,750 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 810 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.
53%[1]
53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
39%[3]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[4]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.
We built the this numbers from Montoya et al. 2023, Frontiers in Veterinary Science and American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 State of the Industry, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

Grave or ashes? The local habit in Louisiana
With about 46.4%[5] of people in Louisiana cremated, visiting a grave on anniversaries is a strong local habit. A pet's stone often becomes part of that ritual: a place to leave flowers, clear leaves and sit for a minute. If that sounds like you, choose a spot you can reach easily in every season, not just the prettiest corner of the yard.
That Louisiana rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for New Iberia only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
How the climate in New Iberia ages a memorial
Photo stones need a little thought in a sunny place like New Iberia. Laser-etched portraits on black granite read best in soft light and can disappear in full midday glare, which is at its fiercest around August. Angle the stone slightly away from the afternoon sun or put it where a shrub throws some shade, and choose a crisp, high-contrast photo.
In the New Iberia heat, dark polished granite can get too hot to touch in the afternoon sun of August, when highs average around 90°F. The stone won't be harmed, but if children or pets will visit the spot, a lighter gray granite or a place with afternoon shade is kinder. Light stone also keeps photo etching easier to read in glare.

How much to budget for a pet stone
Pet cemeteries price very differently from garden stones. By our estimate, the median starting burial price across 15 US pet cemeteries is ~$600[6], and a small pet's whole-body burial across five posted price lists comes to ~$350[7], often before any marker. One natural burial ground charges $250 for a boulder headstone, with engraving from $670[8]. A stone for a New Iberia garden avoids those extras.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Louisiana: Louisiana costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Where a pet stone can go in Louisiana
A pet grave and its stone stay with the house when you sell, so it's worth thinking ahead. Some owners mention a pet burial to buyers, and a stone set on gravel rather than concrete is easy to take with you. None of this needs a permit in most places; the notes below cover burial and scattering in Louisiana.
To find your county or city office in Louisiana, start with the official Louisiana local government directory.
The rules that apply across Louisiana (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Louisiana page. New Iberia may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
How to choose, order and set a pet stone
- Photograph the spot now. Makers can recommend proportions far better when they can see the bed or grave the stone is going into.
- Set a rough budget. Count the marker itself, the engraving, shipping and whatever a cemetery charges to install it; our memorial budget planner totals these for you.
- Choose the material. Let your local freeze and heat decide, not how it looks in the brochure.
- Draft two or three wording options and pick the one that still feels right after a few days.
- Send the details for quotes. Size, material, wording, photo and delivery address are all a maker needs.
- Approve the proof and arrange delivery, then set the stone on drained gravel so it stays level for years.
Making the stone a place to visit
Heat, humidity and mold will test any outdoor keepsake in Acadiana. Granite and cast bronze last for decades; unsealed wood, plaster and plastic often break down within a few years. Planting a tree urn? Late fall or winter gives roots time to establish before the long summer, and native choices like bald cypress or southern magnolia cope well with the climate.

Questions people ask
Does the New Iberia climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In August, with highs near 90°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Why does the New Iberia page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 46.4%[5] of Louisiana residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Where are the providers that serve New Iberia actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Baton Rouge, about 48 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for New Iberia and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from New Iberia?
Usually yes. Youngsville is about 12 miles away, Lafayette is about 19 miles away and Baton Rouge is about 49 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Can I put a pet memorial stone in a rented garden?
Usually yes, as long as it isn't fixed in concrete and you don't bury a body without the landlord's agreement. The simplest approach for renters is a stone you can lift: set on gravel, a garden stone or engraved rock comes out in minutes. A stone with a sealed ashes compartment lets your pet move with you.
Can a memorial stone hold my pet's ashes?
Yes. Some stones have a hollow underside sealed with a plug, or a cavity behind a screwed plate. Check the stated capacity: ashes typically weigh about 3-5% of body weight[9], so a large dog may need more space than most garden stones offer. A waterproof inner bag protects the ashes from damp.
