Richmond, Indiana
What getting a pet stone made in Richmond is like
Winters in east-central Indiana mean repeated freezing and thawing, and summers bring humidity and storms. Outdoor memorials last longest in granite, bronze or heavy concrete, set on a gravel base to limit frost movement. A spot beneath a tree softens the summer sun, but leave room so falling branches in a storm don't damage it. Engraving cut deep into stone stays legible far longer than a painted or printed name.
Richmond has a strong Quaker heritage and a practical streak, and many families favor simple, understated memorials: a plain stone in the garden, a wooden box on a shelf, a photo with a small plaque. Whatever you decide, the provider will return the ashes in something plain and serviceable first, so nothing needs to be chosen immediately. Take the time you need to decide what fits your home.
Some families around Richmond use a stone from their own land. A smooth fieldstone or a rock from the creek bed where your dog swam can be engraved by many monument shops, as long as the face is dense enough to hold lettering. It costs less than a new stone and it already belongs to the place.
Richmond's population is around 35,376, the 29th-largest of the 50 Indiana communities we cover. Cincinnati, roughly 54 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Richmond run from there.
Our pages for Oxford (24 miles), Trotwood (30 miles) and Hamilton (35 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Richmond as well.
Our estimate
13,000
Richmond: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
35,376 ÷ 2.5 = 14,150 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 13,000. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
1,100
Richmond families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
13,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,100 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.
53%[1]
53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
39%[3]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[4]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.
We built the this numbers from Montoya et al. 2023, Frontiers in Veterinary Science and American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 State of the Industry, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

Grave or ashes? The local habit in Indiana
In Indiana, where about 56.5%[5] of people are cremated, families are split fairly evenly between the two traditions, and pet owners are too. Whichever you choose, the stone question is much the same: will it sit over a body or over ashes, will it stay or travel with you, and does it need to meet a cemetery's rules?
The Indiana figure comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
How the climate in Richmond ages a memorial
Order in winter and set in spring is a good rhythm for Richmond. Mortar and construction adhesive don't cure properly in the cold, and January lows around 17°F are far below what they need. If your stone has a separate base or a glued plaque, ask the maker to assemble it in the workshop rather than on a cold day in your yard.
Frozen ground in Richmond during January, February, March, November and December can make digging hard or impossible. If your pet died in winter, a temporary marker and a spring installation are perfectly normal. Many families keep the engraved stone indoors until the ground thaws, which also gives you time to see the proof and check the wording properly.

Stone, engraving and setting: the real prices
In Richmond, as anywhere in the US, the engraving can cost as much as the stone. Monument engravers who charge by the letter typically ask $8–$35/char[6], and a standard 40 to 60 character inscription can total $500 to $1,200 at those rates[6]. Small online pet stones usually include a few lines of text in the price, which is why they look so much cheaper.

Where a pet stone can go in Indiana
Three sets of rules decide where a pet memorial stone can go in Indiana: the public rules on burying a pet, private rules from your homeowners' association, landlord or strata, and the marker rules of any pet cemetery. A stone over buried ashes or in a planter usually raises no issue at all; a whole-body grave and an upright headstone raise the most questions.
To find your county or city office in Indiana, start with the official Indiana local government directory.
We keep Indiana's burial and scattering rules in one place: the Indiana rules summary. Before a home burial in Richmond, also ask the city whether local ordinances add anything.
How to choose, order and set a pet stone
- Decide whether each pet gets its own stone or they share one. Several small stones in a matching set look right along a walkway, while a single bigger marker carrying all the names takes up less space.
- If you expect to add names later, leave space on purpose. Ask the maker to put the first name on the top line and keep the lower part blank.
- Stay with one maker where you can, and note down which stone, which font and what size of lettering was used, so the next name can be matched exactly.
- Ask now what a second inscription will cost and whether the stone has to go back to the workshop or can be cut in place.
- Leave enough room between graves that stones don't crowd each other, and sketch a simple plan showing who rests where.
- Set every stone at the same height on the same gravel base, which keeps the row level as it beds in and lets you mow straight over without catching an edge.
Making the stone a place to visit
Families in Richmond often keep something tangible: a plaster cast of a paw, a small jar of ashes for a child away at Earlham or another college, or a ring or pendant with a trace of ash sealed inside. Nose prints and fur have to be set aside while the provider still has the body, so raise it when you first make contact. Everything else can wait until you're ready.

Questions people ask
Does the Richmond climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 85°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March, November and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
How many pet owners live in Richmond?
By our estimate, about 13,000 households in Richmond have at least one dog or cat, and around 1,100 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 35,376, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Richmond?
The closest communities we cover are Oxford (about 24 miles), Trotwood (about 30 miles) and Hamilton (about 35 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Richmond too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Why does the Richmond page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 56.5%[5] of Indiana residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can I bury my pet in my backyard in Richmond and put a stone on it?
In many places you can bury a pet on land you own, with rules about depth and distance from water, but cities and homeowners' associations can be stricter. Check the local notes on this page and your HOA rules. A stone marking the grave rarely needs any permission of its own once the burial itself is allowed.
Is it too late to get a stone for a pet who died years ago?
Not at all. Many families order a stone months or years later, once they know where they'll settle or when the grief has softened enough to choose words. If you're not sure exactly where your pet was buried, a stone can mark the general area or a spot in the garden they loved.
