Hammond, Indiana
What getting a pet stone made in Hammond is like
Many Hammond families have deep roots in the Region, often with several generations living within a few miles. Sharing ashes among relatives in small keepsake urns, pendants or glass pieces lets everyone keep a part of the pet. Ask about sizes and prices, and think about whether each piece will be displayed on a shelf or tucked away in a drawer for quieter moments.
Lake-effect snow and hard freezes can damage outdoor memorials. For a yard memorial, go with granite or bronze and seat it on packed gravel so it stays level. A flat stone near the back door or a plaque on the garage wall is practical for a narrow lot, and you'll see it every time you take out the trash or park the car.
Some families around Hammond use a stone from their own land. A smooth fieldstone or a rock from the creek bed where your dog swam can be engraved by many monument shops, as long as the face is dense enough to hold lettering. It costs less than a new stone and it already belongs to the place.
With roughly 75,712 residents, Hammond is the 9th-largest of the 50 Indiana communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Chicago, about 19 miles (31 km) away, which is where some providers serving Hammond are based.
Nearby, we also have local pages for Calumet City (3 miles), East Chicago (3 miles) and Lansing (5 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.
Our estimate
28,000
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Hammond
How we calculated this
75,712 ÷ 2.5 = 30,285 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 28,000. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
2,300
Estimated dog and cat losses in Hammond each year
How we calculated this
28,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 2,300 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

How local customs shape pet memorials
In Indiana, about 56.5%[5] of people are cremated and the rest are mostly buried, so both traditions are familiar. That balance shows in pet memorials too: some families here bury their pet whole in the yard and mark it with a flat granite stone, while others bury ashes under a smaller marker or keep them in a stone with a sealed compartment.
That Indiana rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Hammond only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
How the climate in Hammond ages a memorial
Engraving depth matters most where winters are long. In Hammond, with freezing lows through January, February, March and December, ice sits in shallow letters and slowly softens their edges. Ask for sandblasted lettering at least an eighth of an inch deep on granite, avoid painted-only designs, and read our guide to outdoor stone grade and engraving depth before you order.
Frozen ground in Hammond during January, February, March and December can make digging hard or impossible. If your pet died in winter, a temporary marker and a spring installation are perfectly normal. Many families keep the engraved stone indoors until the ground thaws, which also gives you time to see the proof and check the wording properly.

How much to budget for a pet stone
Pet cemetery burial is where costs climb. A typical pet burial in a sample of 15 US pet cemeteries cost $1,500–$2,000[6], and starting prices ranged from $99–$4,000[7]. One Iowa cemetery charges $400 for a standard granite headstone on top of the plot[8]. A stone for your own garden in Hammond is far cheaper; the table shows the range.

Where a pet stone can go in Indiana
Before you dig anywhere in Indiana, find out where underground cables and pipes run; in the US, calling 811 gets them marked for free. Then check any homeowners' association covenants, since some limit permanent features or anything visible from the street. A small flush stone in a backyard bed rarely breaks any rule.
The official Indiana local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Hammond.
Home burial and scattering are governed at the Indiana level first; our Indiana rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Hammond or your HOA adds anything.
A simple plan for your pet's memorial stone
- Mark the spot simply for now. While the soil is still sinking and the words aren't settled, something temporary, like a paver, a pot or a circle of pebbles, is enough to show where your pet rests.
- Decide where the stone will live long term: your garden, a pet cemetery, a planter or somewhere that can move with you.
- Choose the material for your climate. Granite for hard winters and strong sun; slate or river rock where it's mild and dry.
- Write the wording and count the letters. Name, years and one short line fit most small stones. Our memorial stone planner checks the fit.
- Ask two or three makers for written quotes that include lettering, any photo, delivery and setting.
- Approve a proof before anything is cut. Check spelling with someone else in the house.
- Set the stone on compacted gravel so it drains and stays level, and add a plant beside it if you like.
Small rituals that keep the stone meaningful
Hammond's older bungalows and two-story homes often have built-in shelves, mantels or front windows where a memorial fits. A slim urn, a small stone or a framed print of paw or hoof works well in compact rooms. There's no need to decide right away; many families wait until the first raw weeks have passed before they order anything permanent.

Questions people ask
How do Indiana attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Indiana human cremation rate at about 56.5%[5]. We show it on the Hammond page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Will I have to travel to Chicago to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Chicago (roughly 19 miles from Hammond) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Hammond?
Usually yes. Calumet City is about 3 miles away, East Chicago is about 3 miles away and Lansing is about 5 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How many pet owners live in Hammond?
By our estimate, about 28,000 households in Hammond have at least one dog or cat, and around 2,300 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 75,712, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
Where can I find free support after my pet dies in Hammond?
Several US veterinary schools run free phone lines. The Cornell Pet Loss Support Hotline is staffed by trained veterinary students, and the Tufts Pet Loss Support Helpline is free and volunteer-staffed on weekday evenings. Many local shelters and vet practices also know of support groups nearby.
What happens to my pet's memorial stone if I move out of Hammond?
If it sits on a gravel bed, lift it and take it with you; that's why many families avoid concrete. If ashes are inside the stone, they travel too. If your pet is buried beneath it, many owners take the stone and plant something in its place, and some tell the new owners what the spot means.
