An outdoor memorial for your pet, made for Shorewood
By our count, roughly 570 Shorewood families lose a dog or cat every year. A memorial stone is one of the few decisions with no deadline, so here's what to know before you order.
- Wording that fits a small stone
- Flush, raised or with an ashes compartment
- No pressure: a stone can wait until you're ready

Shorewood, Illinois
Where a stone can go in Shorewood
Shorewood's newer subdivisions come with open yards, young trees and patios, and a memorial often grows along with the landscaping: a shade tree planted in a pet's name, a small engraved rock at the edge of a bed, or a bench facing the garden. Indoors, many families keep an urn near a window. Because the crematory's container is sealed, nothing needs choosing this week.
Some Shorewood families prefer memorials that fit in a pocket or on a wrist: a charm holding a trace of ash, a fingerprint-style paw impression on a pendant, or a tiny vial on a keychain. If the family is spread out, several small keepsakes let everyone share. Impressions and fur samples must be taken before cremation, so bring them up when you first call.
On a property near Shorewood, a big natural boulder can make a striking memorial, but moving one is serious work. A tractor bucket or skid steer can shift it, yet stones slip and roll; keep people well clear, and never stand downhill. For anything over a few hundred pounds, ask the engraver whether they can carve it where it will stay.
About 18,536 people live in Shorewood, which makes it the 134th-largest of the 151 Illinois communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Chicago, about 39 miles (63 km) away, which is where some providers serving Shorewood are based.
For a second opinion on price, Crest Hill (7 miles), Joliet (7 miles, a larger centre) and Plainfield (7 miles, a larger centre) are close enough that their providers cover Shorewood routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.
Our estimate
6,800
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Shorewood
How we calculated this
18,536 ÷ 2.5 = 7,414 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 6,800. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
570
Shorewood families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
6,800 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 570 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

How local customs shape pet memorials
Cremation now accounts for about 60.2%[5] of deaths in Illinois, but burial traditions are still strong. If you grew up with family headstones, you may want the same kind of permanence for your pet: dense granite, deep lettering and a proper base. If your family is more used to ashes and urns, a lighter, movable stone may feel more natural.
The Illinois figure comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Choosing a stone that suits Shorewood's seasons
Order in winter and set in spring is a good rhythm for Shorewood. Mortar and construction adhesive don't cure properly in the cold, and January lows around 16°F are far below what they need. If your stone has a separate base or a glued plaque, ask the maker to assemble it in the workshop rather than on a cold day in your yard.
Snow and salt are both hard on stone in Shorewood. A flush marker disappears under snow from January, February, March, November and December, so add a small stake or a tall plant nearby if you want to find it easily. Keep de-icing salt away from the memorial: salt draws water into stone and speeds up flaking, especially on limestone, marble and concrete.

Pet memorial stone prices for families in Shorewood
If you want a picture on the stone, budget for it separately. A laser-etched portrait on a full headstone costs about $500–$800[6] from monument engravers, while small photo-etched granite pet markers from online makers start from $159.99[7]. Ask makers serving Shorewood for a proof before they etch, and compare total prices including delivery.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Illinois: Illinois costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Home burial, rentals and pet cemeteries in Illinois
Rented homes, condos and strata properties need a different plan. You usually can't bury a pet in shared grounds, and anything fixed in place may have to be removed when you leave. A stone with a sealed ashes compartment, or a heavy engraved rock on a patio, gives you a memorial without breaking the lease. Here's the local picture for Illinois.

Ordering a pet memorial stone, step by step
- Note exactly where the grave is today. Pace it out from two fixed points, such as a fence post and the back step, and take a photo before the soil is raked flat.
- Cover the fresh soil with something heavy and flat, a slab or an overturned pot will do, to stop anything from digging there while the ground firms.
- Leave the permanent stone for a few weeks. In the first days everything seems to need deciding at once; this decision keeps until you've had some proper rest.
- Top up the soil as it sinks. Expect the surface to fall by a few inches at first; fill the dip, tread it down and repeat until it holds.
- Measure the settled patch and choose a stone wide enough to cover most of it, which also discourages anything from digging there later.
- Set the finished stone on gravel over the firmed ground, and once a good downpour has been through, put a level on it a second time.
More ways to remember your pet in Shorewood
Setting an outdoor stone is best left until the ground thaws, which in Shorewood can mean waiting from December to late March. That delay can be a gift, giving you time to choose wording and material. For something that will face Will County winters, granite or cast bronze holds up; resin and cheap concrete crack. A gravel base under the stone keeps it level through frost.

Questions people ask
Does the Shorewood climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 84°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March, November and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
Will I have to travel to Chicago to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Chicago (roughly 39 miles from Shorewood) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
How many pet owners live in Shorewood?
By our estimate, about 6,800 households in Shorewood have at least one dog or cat, and around 570 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 18,536, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
Why does the Shorewood page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 60.2%[5] of Illinois residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
What is the best stone for a pet grave in a cold climate?
Dense granite. It absorbs very little water, so it doesn't crack or flake when water freezes inside it. Slate can split along its layers, while sandstone, concrete and cast resin crack or crumble after a few hard winters. Choose deep sandblasted lettering and set the stone on compacted gravel so frost doesn't tilt it.
How do I set a memorial stone so it stays level?
Dig a shallow bed slightly larger than the stone, add 2 to 4 inches of gravel, tamp it firm and level it with a board and a spirit level. Settle the stone on top and check again. For a lawn, set it flush with the grass so a mower can pass over. Heavy upright stones need a proper footing.
