Choosing a pet memorial stone in Union City
Strong summer sun and pounding afternoon storms age cheap garden memorials in south Fulton faster than most people expect. For a Union City yard, natural granite or cast bronze keeps its lettering for years, while painted resin can fade in a single summer. Seat the marker on a shallow bed of pea gravel so rainwater drains away, and keep photos and collars indoors.
Some Union City families keep most of the ashes at home and send small shares to relatives in other states, packed in miniature urns or pendants. Others take a portion to a grandparent's country property and plant a tree there. The crematory can give you a rough idea of the returned amount, which makes it easier to decide how many pieces you need.
On a property near Union City, a big natural boulder can make a striking memorial, but moving one is serious work. A tractor bucket or skid steer can shift it, yet stones slip and roll; keep people well clear, and never stand downhill. For anything over a few hundred pounds, ask the engraver whether they can carve it where it will stay.
Union City's population is around 29,910, the 42nd-largest of the 68 Georgia communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Atlanta, about 15 miles (24 km) away, which is where some providers serving Union City are based.
Families in Union City often end up using a provider from South Fulton (3 miles, a larger centre), East Point (7 miles) and Fayetteville (11 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.
Our estimate
11,000
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Union City
How we calculated this
29,910 ÷ 2.5 = 11,964 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 11,000. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
920
Union City families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
11,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 920 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

How Georgia remembers its dead, and its pets
Cremation covers roughly 54.2%[5] of human deaths in Georgia, and burial much of the rest, so it's common for two people in the same household to want different things. Cremation followed by burying the ashes under a stone often settles it: there's a grave to visit for one person and ashes that can travel for the other.
Source for the Georgia number: NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes a pet cremation rate for Union City, so the human figure is the best local signal available.
When to install, and what the seasons do to stone
Hot, dry summers in Union City mean hard, baked soil for much of the year. If you're burying ashes under a stone, dig and water the spot the evening before to soften it. Stone set on sun-baked clay can shift when the first heavy rain arrives, so a compacted gravel bed is worth the effort even in a dry garden.
Photo stones need a little thought in a sunny place like Union City. Laser-etched portraits on black granite read best in soft light and can disappear in full midday glare, which is at its fiercest around July. Angle the stone slightly away from the afternoon sun or put it where a shrub throws some shade, and choose a crisp, high-contrast photo.

Stone, engraving and setting: the real prices
Pet cemetery burial is where costs climb. A typical pet burial in a sample of 15 US pet cemeteries cost $1,500–$2,000[6], and starting prices ranged from $99–$4,000[7]. One Iowa cemetery charges $400 for a standard granite headstone on top of the plot[8]. A stone for your own garden in Union City is far cheaper; the table shows the range.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Georgia: Georgia costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Home burial, rentals and pet cemeteries in Georgia
A pet grave and its stone stay with the house when you sell, so it's worth thinking ahead. Some owners mention a pet burial to buyers, and a stone set on gravel rather than concrete is easy to take with you. None of this needs a permit in most places; the notes below cover burial and scattering in Georgia.

The Georgia page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Union City's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
How to choose, order and set a pet stone
- Mark the spot simply for now. A flat paver, a potted plant or a ring of pebbles holds the place while the ground settles and you think about wording.
- Decide where the stone will live long term: in a garden bed, at a pet cemetery, inside a large planter, or somewhere portable if a move is likely.
- Choose the material for your climate. Granite for hard winters and strong sun; slate or river rock where it's mild and dry.
- Write the wording and count the letters. On most small stones there's room for a name, the years and a single brief line; the memorial stone planner will tell you whether yours fits.
- Ask two or three makers for written quotes that include lettering, any photo, delivery and setting.
- Approve a proof before anything is cut. Check spelling with someone else in the house.
- Set the stone on compacted gravel so it drains and stays level, and add a plant beside it if you like.
Remembering your pet beside the stone
Union City's townhomes, apartments and family houses make indoor memorials the usual first step: a lidded urn on a sideboard, cremation jewelry, or a photo frame that also holds a paw impression. If an outdoor piece appeals later, a flat engraved stone suits a compact yard without drawing HOA attention. Choosing can wait until you feel ready, even if that takes a season or two.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to Atlanta to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Atlanta (roughly 15 miles from Union City) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Does the Union City climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 90°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Roughly how many pets die in Union City each year?
Our estimate is around 920. It comes from Union City's population (about 29,910), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 11,000 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
How do Georgia attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Georgia human cremation rate at about 54.2%[5]. We show it on the Union City page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Do many families in Union City choose a memorial stone?
We don't track local sales, but the numbers suggest plenty do. By our estimate, around 920 dogs and cats die in Union City each year, from about 11,000 dog- or cat-owning households, and a large share of US owners say they'd prefer home burial (40.4% cremation; 34.9% home burial; 1.9% aquamation[10] in one survey). Many of those graves end up marked with a stone.
Can I have my pet's photo etched onto a stone?
Yes. Makers use a laser on polished black granite to create a gray-scale portrait. Results depend on the picture: send the original file, taken in daylight, with your pet looking toward the camera. Dark pets on dark backgrounds and pale pets on pale ones lose their outline, so ask for background removal and approve a proof.
