An outdoor memorial for your pet, made for Venice
By our count, roughly 930 Venice families lose a dog or cat every year. A memorial stone is one of the few decisions with no deadline, so here's what to know before you order.

Choosing a pet memorial stone in Venice
Gulf salt air and August heat break down some materials fast. For an outdoor memorial in a Venice garden, choose stone or cast bronze, set flat among plantings where a mower won't catch it. Photo prints, wood and resin are happier indoors. A screened lanai counts as outdoors for this purpose: humidity there still does damage over a few summers, and storm shutters don't keep the damp out.
Many Venice households are retirees who relocated from the North, and memorials often need to travel: a compact urn, a keepsake box or jewelry that can move with them or pass to grown children. If you're uncertain, bring the remains home in whatever simple box the provider uses and choose later. No deadline applies to the final memorial, and snowbirds often find the right piece only after spending a season back up North.
Around Venice, the local hardware or farm supply store often sells blank stepping stones and river rocks, and some have paint pens or stencil kits. A homemade stone is a lovely short-term marker and a good project for children. For something permanent, pair it later with a professionally engraved piece of granite that won't fade.
About 30,477 people live in Venice, which makes it the 93rd-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is St. Petersburg, about 47 miles (76 km) away, which is where some providers serving Venice are based.
Venice sits within easy reach of North Port (14 miles, a larger centre), Sarasota (17 miles) and Punta Gorda (26 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Venice; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.
Our estimate
11,000
Venice: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
30,477 ÷ 2.5 = 12,191 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 11,000. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
930
dog and cat deaths per year in Venice, our estimate
How we calculated this
11,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 930 a year. Treat it as a minimum.
53%[1]
53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
39%[3]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[4]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

How Florida remembers its dead, and its pets
About 72.5%[5] of people in Florida are cremated, and local pet crematories are well established. Many offer memorial stones alongside urns, so it's easy to order one when you collect your pet's ashes. It's worth pausing first: a stone chosen a few weeks later, when you know where it will go, usually suits the spot better.
The Florida figure comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Frost, sun and damp: matching stone to Venice
Where summers peak around 93°F, as they do in Venice in August, plants beside a memorial stone need to be tough. Drought-tolerant groundcovers, gravel mulch or a small native shrub look good without daily watering. Our memorial tree finder can suggest a tree or shrub that copes with local heat if you'd like something to grow beside the stone.
Metal parts need a second look in a hot place like Venice. A bronze plaque on granite darkens and changes color over the summer months of April, May, June, July, August, September and October, which many people like; brass or aluminum inserts can dull faster. If the plaque is fixed with adhesive rather than pins, ask the maker whether the bond is rated for strong heat.

What a pet memorial stone costs in Venice
Pet cemeteries price very differently from garden stones. By our estimate, the median starting burial price across 15 US pet cemeteries is ~$600[6], and a small pet's whole-body burial across five posted price lists comes to ~$350[7], often before any marker. One natural burial ground charges $250 for a boulder headstone, with engraving from $670[8]. A stone for a Venice garden avoids those extras.
The Florida price table breaks costs down by product; our services page explains what sits behind each line.

Burial, HOA and cemetery rules in Florida
Rules about marking a pet's grave are light almost everywhere; the rules that matter are about the grave itself. Depth, distance from water and whether you own the land come up most often. If burial at home isn't allowed or practical, a stone can still mark buried ashes, a scattering spot or simply a favorite corner. Local notes for Florida follow.
To find your county or city office in Florida, start with the official Florida local government directory.
Start with the Florida rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat Venice's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.
Ordering a pet memorial stone, step by step
- Check the rules before you buy. Pet cemeteries usually have their own limits on markers, so ask first; for a stone at home, read your lease or HOA covenants.
- Measure the space. Note the width of the bed, how the mower passes and where the stone will be seen from.
- Pick a size and style: flush for lawns, raised for beds, upright for a traditional headstone, or hollow if it will hold ashes.
- Choose a photo if you want one. Send the full-size original, shot outdoors in natural light, where the face takes up most of the picture.
- Compare a local monument company with an online maker. Ask each for the stone type, lettering depth, lead time and total price.
- Plan delivery and lifting. A granite stone can weigh enough that the freight driver leaves it at the roadside, so have a second pair of hands or a dolly ready.
Small rituals that keep the stone meaningful
Water often shapes how Venice families remember a pet. A biodegradable urn released offshore, beyond the distance federal rules require, can be paired with a scattering at sunset from a small boat. Some people keep a tiny portion in a pendant or glass orb afterward. If you're dividing ashes among relatives up North, ask for the total amount before you promise shares.

Questions people ask
Is Venice big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 11,000 Venice households keep a dog or cat and around 930 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 30,477), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Venice?
The closest communities we cover are North Port (about 14 miles), Sarasota (about 17 miles) and Punta Gorda (about 26 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Venice too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Will I have to travel to St. Petersburg to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in St. Petersburg (roughly 47 miles from Venice) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Venice?
There is no frozen-ground season here; average lows stay above freezing all year. The other pressure point is August, when highs around 93°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
How long does it take to make a pet memorial stone?
It depends on the maker and the stone. One US maker of engraved natural stones says they arrive in ~1 week[10]; made-to-order granite and bronze pet markers take 2–4 weeks[11]; and a new full-size headstone from a monument company can take 6–12 weeks[12]. Photo stones add time for proof approval.
Can I bury my pet in my backyard in Venice and put a stone on it?
In many places you can bury a pet on land you own, with rules about depth and distance from water, but cities and homeowners' associations can be stricter. Check the local notes on this page and your HOA rules. A stone marking the grave rarely needs any permission of its own once the burial itself is allowed.
