Pinecrest, Florida
Where a stone can go in Pinecrest
Salt air, heavy rain and strong sun are hard on outdoor materials in southern Miami-Dade. Metals can pit, wood can swell, and some resins fade within a few seasons. If a memorial will live outside, ask suppliers about UV-stable finishes and stone or ceramic that tolerates humidity. Indoors, a keepsake box or small urn usually lasts indefinitely, and you can move it with you if you ever leave Florida.
Pinecrest gardens tend to be lush, with shade trees, orchids and tropical plantings, and many families want a memorial that sits among them. A flat stone set into mulch, a small plaque at the base of a palm, or a potted plant in a glazed urn all suit this setting. Because the limestone is shallow, ask whether an urn you plan to bury needs a pre-dug hole or can stay above ground in a planter.
In a town the size of Pinecrest, there may be no monument company at all, and that's fine. Online makers ship small stones anywhere, and a larger center such as Miami usually has a monument company that will engrave a pet marker. Rural makers are sometimes the most flexible: many will cut a small marker from leftover granite if you ask directly.
About 18,635 people live in Pinecrest, which makes it the 131st-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Miami, about 10 miles (16 km) away, which is where some providers serving Pinecrest are based.
Families in Pinecrest often end up using a provider from Coral Gables (3 miles, a larger centre), Palmetto Bay (3 miles) and Cutler Bay (6 miles, a larger centre). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.
Our estimate
6,850
How many dog- or cat-owning households Pinecrest has (estimate)
How we calculated this
18,635 ÷ 2.5 = 7,454 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 6,850. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
570
Estimated dog and cat losses in Pinecrest each year
How we calculated this
6,850 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 570 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

Burial, cremation and headstones in Florida
With about 72.5%[5] of people in Florida cremated, many families have never needed a headstone for anyone. That can make ordering a stone feel unfamiliar. The good news is that a pet marker is simpler than a human memorial: no cemetery permit in most cases, no minimum size, and you can place it wherever your pet was happiest.
The Florida figure comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Frost, sun and damp: matching stone to Pinecrest
Where summers peak around 91°F, as they do in Pinecrest in August, plants beside a memorial stone need to be tough. Drought-tolerant groundcovers, gravel mulch or a small native shrub look good without daily watering. Our memorial tree finder can suggest a tree or shrub that copes with local heat if you'd like something to grow beside the stone.
Plan installation around the heat. Setting a stone in Pinecrest means digging, leveling and tamping gravel, which is heavy work when August highs sit near 91°F. An early morning in spring or fall is easier, and the ground is often softer then. There's no rush: a temporary marker holds the spot perfectly well through summer.

Stone, engraving and setting: the real prices
Pet cemeteries price very differently from garden stones. By our estimate, the median starting burial price across 15 US pet cemeteries is ~$600[6], and a small pet's whole-body burial across five posted price lists comes to ~$350[7], often before any marker. One natural burial ground charges $250 for a boulder headstone, with engraving from $670[8]. A stone for a Pinecrest garden avoids those extras.

Home burial, rentals and pet cemeteries in Florida
Rules about marking a pet's grave are light almost everywhere; the rules that matter are about the grave itself. Depth, distance from water and whether you own the land come up most often. If burial at home isn't allowed or practical, a stone can still mark buried ashes, a scattering spot or simply a favorite corner. Local notes for Florida follow.
Florida keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Pinecrest.
The Florida page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Pinecrest's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
From first idea to a stone in the ground
- Check the rules before you buy. Pet cemeteries usually have their own limits on markers, so ask first; for a stone at home, read your lease or HOA covenants.
- Measure the space. Note the width of the bed, how the mower passes and where the stone will be seen from.
- Pick a size and style: flush for lawns, raised for beds, upright for a traditional headstone, or hollow if it will hold ashes.
- Choose a photo if you want one. Use the original file, in daylight, with your pet's face filling most of the frame.
- Compare a local monument company with an online maker. Ask each for the stone type, lettering depth, lead time and total price.
- Plan delivery and lifting. Heavy granite may come by freight to the curb, so line up a helper or a hand truck.
Keeping the memory close
Hurricane Andrew in 1992 left a deep mark on this part of the county, and many residents still keep a plan for what they would grab if they had to evacuate. An urn or keepsake can be part of that list. Some families choose a smaller container precisely so it fits in a go-bag, or they divide ashes so one portion stays safely with relatives farther north.

Questions people ask
How many pet owners live in Pinecrest?
By our estimate, about 6,850 households in Pinecrest have at least one dog or cat, and around 570 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 18,635, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
Where are the providers that serve Pinecrest actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Miami, about 10 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Pinecrest and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Pinecrest?
Usually yes. Coral Gables is about 3 miles away, Palmetto Bay is about 3 miles away and Cutler Bay is about 6 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How do Florida attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Florida human cremation rate at about 72.5%[5]. We show it on the Pinecrest page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
What does a pet cemetery plot cost compared with a garden stone?
A lot more. In a sample of 15 US pet cemeteries, a typical burial cost $1,500–$2,000[9], and ongoing care can add more; one New York cemetery charges $105/yr or $3,500[10] for upkeep. A garden stone at home costs only the stone and delivery, starting at ~$39[11] for an engraved garden stone.
Do many families in Pinecrest choose a memorial stone?
We don't track local sales, but the numbers suggest plenty do. By our estimate, around 570 dogs and cats die in Pinecrest each year, from about 6,850 dog- or cat-owning households, and a large share of US owners say they'd prefer home burial (40.4% cremation; 34.9% home burial; 1.9% aquamation[12] in one survey). Many of those graves end up marked with a stone.
