Malabar, Florida
Stone makers, yards and delivery in Malabar
South Brevard's glaring sun and summer downpours wear down outdoor tributes faster than many people expect. Resin cracks, paint peels and inkjet-printed plaques fade within a season. Carved granite or a heavy fieldstone can last decades. Inside, a paw impression in plaster, a small urn or a ring set with a trace of ashes needs no upkeep and packs easily if you move.
Old oaks and generous lots give Malabar families space for an outdoor tribute: a stone at the corner of a paddock, a bench in the shade, or a live oak sapling rooted in a biodegradable urn. If you think you may sell in the coming years, choose a marker that can be lifted and moved, and keep a portion of the ashes in a little container inside the house.
In the country, wildlife is part of the plan. Foxes, coyotes and raccoons may dig at a fresh grave, so many families around Malabar lay a heavy flat stone or paving slab over the site first, then set the engraved marker once the soil has settled. A wide, flat stone does both jobs at once.
About 3,175 people live in Malabar, which makes it the 199th-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Malabar are based about 52 miles away in Port St. Lucie, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
For a second opinion on price, Palm Bay (3 miles, a larger centre), Grant-Valkaria (5 miles) and Melbourne Beach (5 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Malabar routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.
Our estimate
1,150
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Malabar
How we calculated this
3,175 ÷ 2.5 = 1,270 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 1,150. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
100
dog and cat deaths per year in Malabar, our estimate
How we calculated this
1,150 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 100 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

Grave or ashes? The local habit in Florida
Cremation is the norm in Florida: about 72.5%[5] of people who die there are cremated. Pet owners tend to follow the same pattern, which shapes the kind of stone families choose. Here, a memorial stone often marks buried ashes in a flower bed or sits beside an urn, rather than covering a full grave, so smaller stones and ones with a sealed ashes compartment are popular.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Florida figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Malabar tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
When to install, and what the seasons do to stone
Metal parts need a second look in a hot place like Malabar. A bronze plaque on granite darkens and changes color over the summer months of May, June, July, August and September, which many people like; brass or aluminum inserts can dull faster. If the plaque is fixed with adhesive rather than pins, ask the maker whether the bond is rated for strong heat.
Plan installation around the heat. Setting a stone in Malabar means digging, leveling and tamping gravel, which is heavy work when July highs sit near 91°F. An early morning in spring or fall is easier, and the ground is often softer then. There's no rush: a temporary marker holds the spot perfectly well through summer.

What a pet memorial stone costs in Malabar
Pet cemeteries price very differently from garden stones. By our estimate, the median starting burial price across 15 US pet cemeteries is ~$600[6], and a small pet's whole-body burial across five posted price lists comes to ~$350[7], often before any marker. One natural burial ground charges $250 for a boulder headstone, with engraving from $670[8]. A stone for a Malabar garden avoids those extras.

Rules to check before placing a stone in Florida
Burying a pet on land that belongs to someone else, such as a parent's farm or a friend's garden, needs the owner's clear agreement, and it's wise to note the spot for whoever owns the land next. The stone itself is usually the easy part. Our local notes on burial and scattering in Florida follow.
Florida keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Malabar.
We keep Florida's burial and scattering rules in one place: the Florida rules summary. Before a home burial in Malabar, also ask the city whether local ordinances add anything.
From first idea to a stone in the ground
- Mark the spot simply for now. While the soil is still sinking and the words aren't settled, something temporary, like a paver, a pot or a circle of pebbles, is enough to show where your pet rests.
- Decide where the stone will live long term: your garden, a pet cemetery, a planter or somewhere that can move with you.
- Choose the material for your climate. Granite for hard winters and strong sun; slate or river rock where it's mild and dry.
- Write the wording and count the letters. On most small stones there's room for a name, the years and a single brief line; the memorial stone planner will tell you whether yours fits.
- Ask two or three makers for written quotes that include lettering, any photo, delivery and setting.
- Approve a proof before anything is cut. Have a second person at home read every letter of it.
- Set the stone on compacted gravel so that water moves away and the marker sits straight; a plant alongside is a nice touch.
Small rituals that keep the stone meaningful
Residents who value Malabar's scrub and wildlife often choose a memorial that fits the landscape rather than stands out from it. A coontie, a beautyberry or a patch of native wildflowers can grow where a pet liked to rest and will attract birds and butterflies. The ashes need not go into the soil at all; many people keep them indoors while the planting outside does the remembering.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Malabar?
Usually yes. Palm Bay is about 3 miles away, Grant-Valkaria is about 5 miles away and Melbourne Beach is about 5 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How do Florida attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Florida human cremation rate at about 72.5%[5]. We show it on the Malabar page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Does the Malabar climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 91°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Will I have to travel to Port St. Lucie to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Port St. Lucie (roughly 52 miles from Malabar) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
What happens to my pet's memorial stone if I move out of Malabar?
If it sits on a gravel bed, lift it and take it with you; that's why many families avoid concrete. If ashes are inside the stone, they travel too. If your pet is buried beneath it, many owners take the stone and plant something in its place, and some tell the new owners what the spot means.
How many dogs and cats are there in Malabar?
By our estimate, about 1,150 households in Malabar have a dog or cat, and roughly 100 dogs and cats are lost there each year. We calculate this from the city's population, average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures. It's a rough guide to how many families face the same choice as you.
