Lake Nona, Florida
Choosing a pet memorial stone in Lake Nona
Lake Nona's design leans modern, with public art, glass buildings and landscaped trails around the lakes. Some families here like memorials that fit that look: a sleek ceramic urn, a minimalist engraved stone, or jewelry holding a small amount of ash. Others prefer something traditional. Choose what feels right for your home and your pet, not what looks right in a catalog.
The lakes and wetlands around this part of Orlando attract herons, egrets and sandhill cranes, and some families find comfort in a memorial that connects to nature. A tree urn planted in the yard, a butterfly garden, or a bird feeder hung in your pet's favorite spot can serve as a quiet reminder. Check your homeowners association rules before planting anything large.
Rural water is worth thinking about. If your home draws from a private well, keep any grave well away from it and downhill if possible; your state or regional rules set the minimum distance. The stone itself poses no risk to water, but the site you choose for it usually marks where your pet is buried.
We cover 235 communities in Florida, and Lake Nona is one of them. Orlando, roughly 13 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Lake Nona run from there.
Families in Lake Nona often end up using a provider from Meadow Woods (5 miles, a larger centre), Buenaventura Lakes (6 miles, a larger centre) and Narcoossee (6 miles, a larger centre). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.

How local customs shape pet memorials
About 72.5%[1] of people in Florida are cremated, and local pet crematories are well established. Many offer memorial stones alongside urns, so it's easy to order one when you collect your pet's ashes. It's worth pausing first: a stone chosen a few weeks later, when you know where it will go, usually suits the spot better.
That Florida rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Lake Nona only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Frost, sun and damp: matching stone to Lake Nona
Before you set a stone, watch the spot for a week at different times of day. A place in deep shade stays damp and grows moss; one in full afternoon sun makes a photo etching hard to read and heats dark granite. A spot with morning sun and afternoon shade suits most stones and most visits.

What drives the price of a pet memorial stone
Pet cemetery burial is where costs climb. A typical pet burial in a sample of 15 US pet cemeteries cost $1,500–$2,000[5], and starting prices ranged from $99–$4,000[6]. One Iowa cemetery charges $400 for a standard granite headstone on top of the plot[7]. A stone for your own garden in Lake Nona is far cheaper; the table shows the range.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Florida: Florida costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Where a pet stone can go in Florida
Rented homes, condos and strata properties need a different plan. You usually can't bury a pet in shared grounds, and anything fixed in place may have to be removed when you leave. A stone with a sealed ashes compartment, or a heavy engraved rock on a patio, gives you a memorial without breaking the lease. Here's the local picture for Florida.
The official Florida local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Lake Nona.
For Florida's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the Florida guide. Local rules in Lake Nona can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
A simple plan for your pet's memorial stone
- Photograph the spot now. A picture of the grave or garden bed helps any maker suggest a size that suits it.
- Set a rough budget. Include the stone, lettering, delivery and any cemetery setting fee; our memorial budget planner adds it up.
- Choose the material. Let your local freeze and heat decide, not how it looks in the brochure.
- Draft two or three wording options and sleep on them for a few days, then go with the one that hasn't worn thin.
- Send the details for quotes. Size, material, wording, photo and delivery address are all a maker needs.
- Approve the proof and arrange delivery, and bed the marker on gravel that drains, which keeps it from tilting over the years.
Keeping the memory close
Roughly 72 percent of Floridians are cremated, so an urn on a bookshelf is nothing unusual to your neighbors. If relatives live elsewhere, as they often do for people who moved to Lake Nona for work, dividing the ashes into keepsake urns or pendants lets each person hold on to a part of your pet. There is no deadline for deciding.
Every option Lake Nona families choose between is on the services page, there are guides for the big decisions and articles for the details, the planning tools turn your pet's details into figures, or see what other families chose in the poll results. Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Lake Nona?
Usually yes. Meadow Woods is about 5 miles away, Buenaventura Lakes is about 6 miles away and Narcoossee is about 6 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How do Florida attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Florida human cremation rate at about 72.5%[1]. We show it on the Lake Nona page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Will I have to travel to Orlando to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Orlando (roughly 13 miles from Lake Nona) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can I engrave a rock from my own garden or land?
Often, yes. Many monument companies will engrave a customer's own stone if its face is dense and smooth enough to hold lettering. Soft, crumbly or heavily layered rock won't take fine letters well. Take a photo and measurements to the engraver first, and ask whether they need the stone brought in or can work on site.
What does a pet cemetery plot cost compared with a garden stone?
A lot more. In a sample of 15 US pet cemeteries, a typical burial cost $1,500–$2,000[5], and ongoing care can add more; one New York cemetery charges $105/yr or $3,500[9] for upkeep. A garden stone at home costs only the stone and delivery, starting at ~$39[2] for an engraved garden stone.
How do I set a memorial stone so it stays level?
Dig a shallow bed slightly larger than the stone, add 2 to 4 inches of gravel, tamp it firm and level it with a board and a spirit level. Settle the stone on top and check again. For a lawn, set it flush with the grass so a mower can pass over. Heavy upright stones need a proper footing.
