Cocoa Beach, Florida
What getting a pet stone made in Cocoa Beach is like
Surf culture shapes Cocoa Beach, and some families let a memorial reflect it: a small board-shaped plaque with the animal's name, an urn in sea-glass green, or a box of sand and shells collected on a favorite stretch of beach. Condo living means many memorials are compact, sized for a shelf or a nightstand rather than a garden, and easy to move if you relocate.
Snowbirds, cruise-port workers and families with relatives scattered across the country all live in Cocoa Beach, so dividing ashes makes sense for many. A handful of small containers, one per household, lets everyone keep a share. Ashes do not spoil or change, so a scattering from a surfboard or a boat can wait until the right people are in town, even if that takes a year or two.
On a property near Cocoa Beach, a big natural boulder can make a striking memorial, but moving one is serious work. A tractor bucket or skid steer can shift it, yet stones slip and roll; keep people well clear, and never stand downhill. For anything over a few hundred pounds, ask the engraver whether they can carve it where it will stay.
Cocoa Beach's population is around 11,314, the 154th-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Orlando, about 49 miles (79 km) away, which is where some providers serving Cocoa Beach are based.
Families in Cocoa Beach often end up using a provider from Merritt Island (3 miles, a larger centre), Cape Canaveral (5 miles) and Rockledge (7 miles, a larger centre). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.
Our estimate
4,150
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Cocoa Beach
How we calculated this
11,314 ÷ 2.5 = 4,526 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 4,150. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
350
dog and cat deaths per year in Cocoa Beach, our estimate
How we calculated this
4,150 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 350 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

Burial, cremation and headstones in Florida
About 72.5%[5] of people in Florida are cremated, and local pet crematories are well established. Many offer memorial stones alongside urns, so it's easy to order one when you collect your pet's ashes. It's worth pausing first: a stone chosen a few weeks later, when you know where it will go, usually suits the spot better.
For the Florida figure we rely on NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Cocoa Beach rather than as pet data.
When to install, and what the seasons do to stone
Garden watering in Cocoa Beach is its own weather. Sprinklers running through July spray hard water across dark polished granite and leave a white mineral crust that dulls the lettering. Aim the heads away from the stone, or water the bed by hand, and rinse off any spots before they bake on and build up.
Hot, dry summers in Cocoa Beach mean hard, baked soil for much of the year. If you're burying ashes under a stone, dig and water the spot the evening before to soften it. Stone set on sun-baked clay can shift when the first heavy rain arrives, so a compacted gravel bed is worth the effort even in a dry garden.

Budgeting for the stone, lettering and delivery
In Cocoa Beach, as anywhere in the US, the engraving can cost as much as the stone. Monument engravers who charge by the letter typically ask $8–$35/char[6], and a standard 40 to 60 character inscription can total $500 to $1,200 at those rates[6]. Small online pet stones usually include a few lines of text in the price, which is why they look so much cheaper.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Florida: Florida costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Burial, HOA and cemetery rules in Florida
Rules about marking a pet's grave are light almost everywhere; the rules that matter are about the grave itself. Depth, distance from water and whether you own the land come up most often. If burial at home isn't allowed or practical, a stone can still mark buried ashes, a scattering spot or simply a favorite corner. Local notes for Florida follow.
The official Florida local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Cocoa Beach.
Start with the Florida rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat Cocoa Beach's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.
What to do first, and what can wait
- Decide how much of the ashes belongs with the stone: all of them sealed inside, a small portion buried beneath, or none, with the stone simply marking a place your pet loved.
- If the stone will hold ashes, ask the maker for the cavity's volume and compare it with the container the crematory gave you. Our urn size calculator estimates the space you need.
- Keep the ashes in a sealed waterproof pouch rather than pouring them straight into the stone; unbagged, they absorb damp and set into lumps.
- Place the stone as soon as it arrives if you like. With no grave to settle, many families time it for a birthday or the first warm weekend.
- Pick a spot that stays yours, a corner of the patio or a big pot, for instance, if moving house is a possibility.
- Write down what's inside the stone and file the note with your important documents, so a future owner or relative doesn't treat it as decoration.
Keeping the memory close
Sun, salt and summer storms test anything left outside on the island. Glazed stoneware and granite last; painted wood and cheap metal fade and corrode. Scattering at sea or on the Banana River is a popular idea here, but check the rules first, pick a calm morning, and avoid the marked turtle nests on the beach from spring through fall.

Questions people ask
Why does the Cocoa Beach page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 72.5%[5] of Florida residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
How many pet owners live in Cocoa Beach?
By our estimate, about 4,150 households in Cocoa Beach have at least one dog or cat, and around 350 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 11,314, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
Where are the providers that serve Cocoa Beach actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Orlando, about 49 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Cocoa Beach and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Does the Cocoa Beach climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 91°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Will a memorial stone fade in the Cocoa Beach sun?
Natural stone with carved lettering won't fade in any meaningful way. What fades is resin, printed designs and the paint inside letters, which may need touching up every few years in strong sun. Photo etching on black granite doesn't fade either, but it can be hard to read in harsh midday glare, so give it a little afternoon shade.
How do I remove hard-water spots from a granite pet stone in Cocoa Beach?
White spots usually come from sprinklers or hose spray drying in the sun. Rinse them with clean water, then dry the stone with a microfiber towel. For stubborn marks, a pH-neutral stone cleaner is safe on polished granite. Avoid vinegar, lemon juice and abrasive pads, and aim sprinklers away from the stone so the spots don't return.
