Boca Raton, Florida
Stone makers, yards and delivery in Boca Raton
The Gumbo Limbo Nature Center, where injured sea turtles are rehabilitated, and the beach parks strung along A1A are places many Boca families connect with peace and renewal. Scattering at sea is a frequent wish; a charter captain can take a family out on a calm morning, or a water-soluble urn can be placed gently from shore. City beach rules apply, so check before scattering. A sea grape or frangipani in the garden also makes a lovely living marker.
Boca Raton's residents include large Jewish and Christian communities alongside many other faiths, and memorials often reflect those traditions: a plain wooden box, a stone carved with a Hebrew phrase or a verse, a crystal piece, or fine jewelry with a trace of ash inside. Some families simply prefer a photograph in a silver frame. Ask the maker for exact dimensions, the lead time and a complete price.
Some families near Boca Raton ask a local landscape yard for a natural boulder and then have it engraved. It can be a beautiful, very personal memorial, but check that the engraver will work on that type of rock, because soft or crumbly stone won't hold fine letters. A dense, smooth face gives the cleanest result. Families in nearby Jacksonville often face the same choice.
About 101,582 people live in Boca Raton, which makes it the 24th-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. Hialeah, roughly 37 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Boca Raton run from there.
Our pages for Deerfield Beach (4 miles), Delray Beach (7 miles) and Coconut Creek (7 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Boca Raton as well.
Our estimate
37,500
Boca Raton: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
101,582 ÷ 2.5 = 40,633 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 37,500. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
3,100
Boca Raton families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
37,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 3,100 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.
53%[1]
53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
39%[3]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[4]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

Burial, cremation and headstones in Florida
Because cremation is so common in Florida (about 72.5%[5] of people are cremated), outdoor memorials here often work alongside an urn indoors. A common pattern is to keep most of the ashes at home, bury a small portion in the garden and set a stone over it. That way the garden has a place to visit and nothing is lost if you move.
That Florida rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Boca Raton only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
When to install, and what the seasons do to stone
Photo stones need a little thought in a sunny place like Boca Raton. Laser-etched portraits on black granite read best in soft light and can disappear in full midday glare, which is at its fiercest around August. Angle the stone slightly away from the afternoon sun or put it where a shrub throws some shade, and choose a crisp, high-contrast photo.
Garden watering in Boca Raton is its own weather. Sprinklers running through August spray hard water across dark polished granite and leave a white mineral crust that dulls the lettering. Aim the heads away from the stone, or water the bed by hand, and rinse off any spots before they bake on and build up.

How much to budget for a pet stone
Pet memorial stones cover a wide price range in the US, and the material matters more than the size. Engraved garden stones start at ~$39[6] across three US sellers, while flat granite markers start from $157.95[7] and upright granite headstones run $258–$628[8]. The table shows published prices you can use to judge any quote from a maker serving Boca Raton.

Where a pet stone can go in Florida
Pet cemeteries in Florida each set their own marker rules: size, material, whether upright stones are allowed and who installs them. Human cemeteries generally don't accept pets. If you plan a cemetery stone, get the rules sheet first. For a home memorial, here's what we know about burial and scattering locally.

Home burial and scattering are governed at the Florida level first; our Florida rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Boca Raton or your HOA adds anything.
From first idea to a stone in the ground
- Work out what the stone is marking: a grave, buried ashes, a scattering spot or simply a place your pet loved.
- If ashes will go inside the stone, check the cavity size against your pet's ashes with our urn size calculator.
- Choose dense stone and carved lettering. Painted or printed designs look bright on day one but fade outdoors.
- Keep the wording short. On a typical small marker you get two or three lines, each holding around 14 to 16 capitals.
- Get written quotes from makers who serve your area, and ask what happens if the stone arrives damaged.
- Sign off the proof, then plan the setting: gravel bed, level, and a gap from tree trunks so roots don't lift it.
Small rituals that keep the stone meaningful
Seasonal residents splitting the calendar between Boca and the Northeast or Midwest often want memorials that can move with them: a matched pair of small urns, one for each home, or a pendant worn on both sides of the migration. Dividing the ashes also lets adult children in other states keep some. Before cremation, let the provider know how many portions you need and what container sizes suit.

Questions people ask
Does the Boca Raton climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In August, with highs near 91°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Boca Raton?
Usually yes. Deerfield Beach is about 4 miles away, Delray Beach is about 7 miles away and Coconut Creek is about 7 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How many pet owners live in Boca Raton?
By our estimate, about 37,500 households in Boca Raton have at least one dog or cat, and around 3,100 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 101,582, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
Is cremation common in Florida?
For people, yes: about 72.5%[5] of Florida deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Boca Raton follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Will a memorial stone fade in the Boca Raton sun?
Natural stone with carved lettering won't fade in any meaningful way. What fades is resin, printed designs and the paint inside letters, which may need touching up every few years in strong sun. Photo etching on black granite doesn't fade either, but it can be hard to read in harsh midday glare, so give it a little afternoon shade.
How many words fit on a small pet memorial stone?
Less than most people expect. As a rough guide, a 12-inch-wide stone with 1-inch capital letters fits about 14 to 16 characters per line once margins are allowed for, and most small stones take two to four lines. A name, the years and one short line is the classic layout. Our memorial stone planner previews it for you.
