Stone makers, yards and delivery in Milford
Some Milford families want something small enough to keep in a pocket or wear every day: a pendant, a charm, or a glass bead with a trace of ashes inside. Each uses only a little, so most of the remains can still go into an urn or be scattered later. Providers can usually divide ashes on request; ask how the portions come back.
Wooden ships were built along the Mispillion for generations, and that heritage appeals to some Milford families choosing a memorial: a hand-finished wooden chest, a carved nameboard, or an anchor-shaped marker for the garden. Others prefer a plain ceramic urn or a paw print cast. Confirm the dimensions, the finish and the overall cost with the maker before any money changes hands.
Human cemeteries in towns like Milford generally don't accept pet burials, though a few have added pet sections or allow ashes in some circumstances. If you want your pet near a family plot, ask the cemetery office directly rather than assuming. Otherwise, a private stone on family land or at a regional pet cemetery is the usual route.
Milford is home to about 14,723 people, the 5th-largest of the 11 Delaware communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Baltimore, about 69 miles (111 km) away, which is where some providers serving Milford are based.
The closest communities we cover are Georgetown (15 miles), Dover (18 miles, a larger centre) and Seaford (20 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Milford too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.
Our estimate
5,400
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Milford
How we calculated this
14,723 ÷ 2.5 = 5,889 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 5,400. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
450
dog and cat deaths per year in Milford, our estimate
How we calculated this
5,400 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 450 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

Grave or ashes? The local habit in Delaware
As cremation has grown to about 59.7%[5] of deaths in Delaware, many pet cemeteries have added small plots just for ashes. These usually take a smaller flat marker than a full grave and cost less to open. If a cemetery appeals but a whole plot feels like too much, ask whether it has an ashes section and what size stone it allows there.
We take the Delaware rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Milford, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Frost, sun and damp: matching stone to Milford
Mild, damp weather in Milford means moss and lichen grow fast on stone, especially in shade. They look lovely on a natural rock but can fill in shallow lettering within a few years. Choose deep carved letters, put the stone where it gets some sun, and scrub it gently with water and a soft brush once or twice a year.
Grass keeps growing for much of the year in Milford, and it creeps over a flush marker faster than you'd think. A narrow edging strip of gravel or brick around the stone stops turf from swallowing the lettering, gives the mower a clean line and saves you trimming by hand every few weeks.

What a pet memorial stone costs in Milford
Pet cemeteries price very differently from garden stones. By our estimate, the median starting burial price across 15 US pet cemeteries is ~$600[6], and a small pet's whole-body burial across five posted price lists comes to ~$350[7], often before any marker. One natural burial ground charges $250 for a boulder headstone, with engraving from $670[8]. A stone for a Milford garden avoids those extras.

Where a pet stone can go in Delaware
If you own your home, you can usually place a garden stone wherever you like; the stricter rules concern burying a body, not marking a spot. If you rent, ask your landlord before burying anything or setting a stone in concrete, and choose a stone you can lift and take with you. Below are the burial and scattering notes we have for Delaware.

The Delaware page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Milford's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
From first idea to a stone in the ground
- Note exactly where the grave is today. Pace it out from two fixed points, such as a fence post and the back step, and take a photo before the soil is raked flat.
- Cover the fresh soil with something heavy and flat, a slab or an overturned pot will do, to stop anything from digging there while the ground firms.
- Leave the permanent stone for a few weeks. Shock makes every choice feel urgent, and this one can wait until you're sleeping again.
- Top up the soil as it sinks. Expect the surface to fall by a few inches at first; fill the dip, tread it down and repeat until it holds.
- Measure the settled patch and choose a stone wide enough to cover most of it, which also discourages anything from digging there later.
- Set the finished stone on gravel over the firmed ground, and once a good downpour has been through, put a level on it a second time.
Small rituals that keep the stone meaningful
The Mispillion Riverwalk, and the marshes and sandy bay beaches east of town where horseshoe crabs come ashore each spring, are landscapes many people here love. Scattering in a wildlife area or on the water may require permission, so check with whoever manages it. Burying a biodegradable urn in a home garden, perhaps under a crape myrtle, avoids the paperwork.

Questions people ask
How do Delaware attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Delaware human cremation rate at about 59.7%[5]. We show it on the Milford page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Milford?
January and February: average lows are below freezing then, and frozen ground makes a home grave slow or impossible until it thaws. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 87°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
How many pet owners live in Milford?
By our estimate, about 5,400 households in Milford have at least one dog or cat, and around 450 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 14,723, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Milford?
The closest communities we cover are Georgetown (about 15 miles), Dover (about 18 miles) and Seaford (about 20 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Milford too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Can I have my pet's photo etched onto a stone?
Yes. Makers use a laser on polished black granite to create a gray-scale portrait. Results depend on the picture: send the original file, taken in daylight, with your pet looking toward the camera. Dark pets on dark backgrounds and pale pets on pale ones lose their outline, so ask for background removal and approve a proof.
Will animals disturb a pet grave in the countryside near Milford?
They can. Foxes, coyotes and raccoons sometimes dig at fresh graves, especially shallow ones. Bury at the depth your local rules require, then lay a heavy flat stone or paving slab over the site. Once the soil settles, you can set the engraved marker on top or beside it.
