Choosing a pet memorial stone in Ontario

Ontario, California

Stone makers, yards and delivery in Ontario

Hard, dry ground and summer heat make outdoor memorials in Ontario a practical question. A memorial stone or engraved marker stands up to sun far better than wood, and a biodegradable urn planted with a drought-tolerant tree can suit a garden better than a thirsty shrub. If you plan to move, a small stone you can take with you is a sensible alternative to planting.

The San Gabriel Mountains line the northern horizon on clear days, and Mount Baldy often carries snow in winter, which makes the foothills a place many local families think of for a quiet farewell. If you'd like to scatter some ashes in the mountains or a regional park, check the rules for that particular land first, since public agencies set their own. Keeping a portion back for an urn or keepsake gives you both.

Neighborhoods with homeowners' associations are common in and around Ontario. Most associations care about what's visible from the street, not what sits in a backyard bed, but some restrict permanent structures or anything set in concrete. A loose-set garden stone is rarely a problem; an upright headstone in the front yard might be. Check your covenants if you're unsure.

Ontario is home to about 187,013 people, the 24th-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Ontario are based about 12 miles away in Fontana, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.

Our pages for Montclair (3 miles), Upland (4 miles) and Rancho Cucamonga (4 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Ontario as well.

Our estimate

69,000

How many dog- or cat-owning households Ontario has (estimate)

How we calculated this

187,013 ÷ 2.5 = 74,805 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 69,000. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.

Our estimate

5,750

dog and cat deaths per year in Ontario, our estimate

How we calculated this

69,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 5,750 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

53%[1]

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.

12.69 years[2]

US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.

39%[3]

39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.

11.18 years[4]

US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

Local traditions and what they mean for a pet stone

In places where cremation is as common as it is in California, where about 70.5%[5] of people are cremated, ashes give families more freedom. A stone doesn't have to sit over a grave. It can mark a scattering spot, hold a portion of ashes in a cavity or stand in a patio planter, and it can move with you when you do.

NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the California figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Ontario tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.

How the climate in Ontario ages a memorial

Weather decides how a stone ages more than price does. Porous stone soaks up water; if that water freezes, the surface flakes. Strong sun fades paint and resin. Constant damp grows moss. Whatever the conditions around Ontario, dense granite with deep sandblasted letters is the most forgiving choice.

Stone, engraving and setting: the real prices

Lead times vary more than prices. Natural engraved stones from one US maker arrive in ~1 week[6], made-to-order granite and bronze markers take 2–4 weeks[7], and a new full-size headstone from a monument company can take 6–12 weeks[8]. If you want the stone in place for an anniversary in Ontario, order well ahead.

Burial, HOA and cemetery rules in California

A pet grave and its stone stay with the house when you sell, so it's worth thinking ahead. Some owners mention a pet burial to buyers, and a stone set on gravel rather than concrete is easy to take with you. None of this needs a permit in most places; the notes below cover burial and scattering in California.

The official California local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Ontario.

We keep California's burial and scattering rules in one place: the California rules summary. Before a home burial in Ontario, also ask the city whether local ordinances add anything.

A simple plan for your pet's memorial stone

  1. Give yourself time. A stone has no deadline, and a fresh grave settles for a month or two before it can take a heavy marker.
  2. Talk about the words with your family. Kids tend to come up with the truest lines, and reading a phrase aloud is the quickest test of whether it belongs.
  3. Decide how permanent it should be. Set on gravel, a stone lifts out if you move; set in concrete, it usually stays.
  4. Order from a maker who sends a proof, and read it on your phone at arm's length, roughly how it will look from the path.
  5. Choose an installation day with soft ground and good weather, and dig a shallow bed for 3 to 4 inches of gravel.
  6. Place the stone together. Turning it into a brief ritual helps many families: someone tells a memory, a well-loved toy goes beside it, or a plant goes in.

More ways to remember your pet in Ontario

With so many Ontario homes built in the last two decades, families often want a memorial that moves with them rather than a spot in the yard they may leave. Urns, small keepsake containers, jewelry holding a pinch of ashes and indoor photo frames all travel easily. If you rent, a portable keepsake avoids any question about burying remains on property that isn't yours.

Questions people ask

Is cremation common in California?

For people, yes: about 70.5%[5] of California deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Ontario follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Ontario?

Usually yes. Montclair is about 3 miles away, Upland is about 4 miles away and Rancho Cucamonga is about 4 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Is Ontario big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?

Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 69,000 Ontario households keep a dog or cat and around 5,750 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 187,013), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.

Will I have to travel to Fontana to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in Fontana (roughly 12 miles from Ontario) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

How much does a pet memorial stone cost in Ontario?

Published US prices give a good guide. Engraved garden stones start at ~$39[10], natural engraved river stones run $38–$115[11], flat granite markers start from $157.95[12] and upright granite headstones cost $258–$628[13] (per one large retailer). Delivery, a photo and cemetery setting fees are extra, so ask Ontario makers for a written total.

Do many families in Ontario choose a memorial stone?

We don't track local sales, but the numbers suggest plenty do. By our estimate, around 5,750 dogs and cats die in Ontario each year, from about 69,000 dog- or cat-owning households, and a large share of US owners say they'd prefer home burial (40.4% cremation; 34.9% home burial; 1.9% aquamation[14] in one survey). Many of those graves end up marked with a stone.
