Dana Point, California
Where a stone can go in Dana Point
Salt air, sun and wind are what outdoor memorials in Dana Point face, rather than frost. Granite, sealed stone and ceramics hold up well, while some metals and painted finishes weather quickly near the water. If you plan a garden marker, a sheltered corner protects the engraving. Biodegradable urns can work under native coastal plants that need little water once established.
Many Dana Point residents feel tied to the harbor and the headlands, and it is natural to want a memorial that reflects the coast. Some families keep ashes at home and visit the bluff trails on anniversaries; others plant a drought-tolerant shrub over a bio urn. Whatever you choose, it can be simple. Choose the option that fits how you want to remember.
Space is rarely the problem around Dana Point. Larger lots mean more families bury their pets at home, often under a favorite tree or at the edge of a field. On open land, choose a flush granite marker or a heavy natural stone that a mower, tractor or curious livestock won't move, and note the spot on a sketch in case the ground changes.
With roughly 32,232 residents, Dana Point is the 205th-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. Irvine, roughly 16 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Dana Point run from there.
Dana Point sits within easy reach of San Juan Capistrano (3 miles), Laguna Niguel (4 miles) and San Clemente (5 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Dana Point; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.
Our estimate
12,000
Dana Point: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
32,232 ÷ 2.5 = 12,893 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 12,000. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
990
dog and cat deaths per year in Dana Point, our estimate
How we calculated this
12,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 990 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

We built the this numbers from American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 State of the Industry and Montoya et al. 2023, Frontiers in Veterinary Science, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

Burial, cremation and headstones in California
About 70.5%[5] of people in California are cremated, and local pet crematories are well established. Many offer memorial stones alongside urns, so it's easy to order one when you collect your pet's ashes. It's worth pausing first: a stone chosen a few weeks later, when you know where it will go, usually suits the spot better.
For the California figure we rely on NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Dana Point rather than as pet data.
When to install, and what the seasons do to stone
Mild, damp weather in Dana Point means moss and lichen grow fast on stone, especially in shade. They look lovely on a natural rock but can fill in shallow lettering within a few years. Choose deep carved letters, put the stone where it gets some sun, and scrub it gently with water and a soft brush once or twice a year.
Because frost is rare in Dana Point, you can install a stone almost any time of year. The best days are dry ones after rain, when the soil is soft enough to dig but not muddy. Avoid setting a stone just before February, the wettest month, if you're on heavy clay; wet ground settles unevenly and the stone may tilt.

How much to budget for a pet stone
Pet memorial stones cover a wide price range in the US, and the material matters more than the size. Engraved garden stones start at ~$39[6] across three US sellers, while flat granite markers start from $157.95[7] and upright granite headstones run $258–$628[8]. The table shows published prices you can use to judge any quote from a maker serving Dana Point.

Where a pet stone can go in California
A pet grave and its stone stay with the house when you sell, so it's worth thinking ahead. Some owners mention a pet burial to buyers, and a stone set on gravel rather than concrete is easy to take with you. None of this needs a permit in most places; the notes below cover burial and scattering in California.
To find your county or city office in California, start with the official California local government directory.
The California page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Dana Point's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
How to choose, order and set a pet stone
- Note exactly where the grave is today. Count the steps from two things that won't move, like a post and the porch step, and photograph it before raking evens out the ground.
- Cover the fresh soil with something heavy and flat, a slab or an overturned pot will do, to stop anything from digging there while the ground firms.
- Leave the permanent stone for a few weeks. In the first days everything seems to need deciding at once; this decision keeps until you've had some proper rest.
- Top up the soil as it sinks. A new grave often drops a few inches; add soil, firm it with your foot and wait for it to stop moving.
- Measure the settled patch and choose a stone wide enough to cover most of it, which also discourages anything from digging there later.
- Set the finished stone on gravel over the firmed ground, then check its level again after the first heavy rain.
Remembering your pet beside the stone
Dana Point homes range from harbor-view condos to hillside houses with terraced gardens, and memorials here often take the ocean into account. An urn in a sea-glass color, a smooth stone set in a coastal garden or a pendant holding a little ash all fit. Before ordering, consider where the piece will sit, and whether you want something portable or something that stays in the garden.

Questions people ask
Roughly how many pets die in Dana Point each year?
Our estimate is around 990. It comes from Dana Point's population (about 32,232), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 12,000 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
How do California attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the California human cremation rate at about 70.5%[5]. We show it on the Dana Point page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Does the Dana Point climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In August, with highs near 85°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Where are the providers that serve Dana Point actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Irvine, about 16 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Dana Point and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
What does engraving cost on a pet headstone?
Small online pet stones usually include a few lines of text in the price. Monument engravers who cut full-size headstones often charge by the letter, typically $8–$35/char[9], or a flat $50–$150/line[10]. A laser-etched portrait costs about $500–$800[11] (per one large retailer). Short wording on a smaller stone is the easiest way to keep the cost down.
Can I add a second pet's name to an existing memorial stone?
Often, yes, if there's room and the stone is suitable. Many monument engravers can cut new lettering on site or in the workshop, and matching the original typeface and depth is easiest if you know who made the stone. If you're ordering now and expect to add a name later, ask for blank space to be left below the first inscription.
