Pet memorials in Sitka: the local picture
Many people in Sitka feel the pull of the sea when remembering a pet, and ashes scattered in Sitka Sound or on a quiet beach are one way to mark that. If you would like to keep something too, set aside a small portion before scattering, for a keepsake urn, a pendant or a paw print. It is easy to do at the start and impossible to undo later.
Rain and salt air are hard on anything left outdoors in Sitka. Wooden markers weather and moss quickly, and cheap metal corrodes. If you want an outdoor memorial, granite, slate or a heavy beach stone engraved by hand will last, and a spot sheltered by spruce will keep it clear of the worst weather. Indoors, sealed urns protect ashes from Sitka's damp air.
Rural water is worth thinking about. If your home draws from a private well, keep any grave well away from it and downhill if possible; your state or regional rules set the minimum distance. The stone itself poses no risk to water, but the site you choose for it usually marks where your pet is buried.
With roughly 8,319 residents, Sitka is the 5th-largest of the 10 Alaska communities we cover.
For a second opinion on price, Juneau (84 miles, a larger centre) are close enough that their providers cover Sitka routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.
Our estimate
3,050
Sitka: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
8,319 ÷ 2.5 = 3,328 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 3,050. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
260
Sitka families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
3,050 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 260 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.
53%[1]
53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
39%[3]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[4]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

Burial, cremation and headstones in Alaska
Scattering is common in Alaska, since cremation accounts for roughly 74.1%[5] of human deaths there, and many families scatter a pet's ashes on a beach or a favorite trail. You can't leave a stone there, but you can bring the place home: a pebble from that beach set beside an engraved marker, or the trail's name carved on the stone itself.
The Alaska figure comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Which stones survive the weather in Sitka
Weather decides how a stone ages more than price does. Porous stone soaks up water; if that water freezes, the surface flakes. Strong sun fades paint and resin. Constant damp grows moss. Whatever the conditions around Sitka, dense granite with deep sandblasted letters is the most forgiving choice.

Pet memorial stone prices for families in Sitka
If you want a picture on the stone, budget for it separately. A laser-etched portrait on a full headstone costs about $500–$800[6] from monument engravers, while small photo-etched granite pet markers from online makers start from $159.99[7]. Ask makers serving Sitka for a proof before they etch, and compare total prices including delivery.

What Alaska allows for pet graves and markers
A pet grave and its stone stay with the house when you sell, so it's worth thinking ahead. Some owners mention a pet burial to buyers, and a stone set on gravel rather than concrete is easy to take with you. None of this needs a permit in most places; the notes below cover burial and scattering in Alaska.

A simple plan for your pet's memorial stone
- Decide whether each pet gets its own stone or they share one. Several small stones in a matching set look right along a walkway, while a single bigger marker carrying all the names takes up less space.
- If you expect to add names later, leave space on purpose. Ask the maker to put the first name on the top line and keep the lower part blank.
- Stay with one maker where you can, and note down which stone, which font and what size of lettering was used, so the next name can be matched exactly.
- Ask now what a second inscription will cost and whether the stone has to go back to the workshop or can be cut in place.
- Leave enough room between graves so the markers have breathing space, and draw a rough map with each pet's name in its place.
- Set every stone at the same height on the same gravel base, so the group settles evenly and the mower passes cleanly.
More ways to remember your pet in Sitka
Sitka's long history, from Tlingit villages and totem poles to the onion dome of the old Russian cathedral, gives the town a strong sense of remembering. Families often want something that fits that setting: a carved wooden box, a stone from a local beach, or a simple urn kept at home. Ordering a memorial item online is easy, but allow extra time for shipping to the island.

Questions people ask
Is Sitka big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 3,050 Sitka households keep a dog or cat and around 260 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 8,319), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
Is cremation common in Alaska?
For people, yes: about 74.1%[5] of Alaska deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Sitka follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
What does engraving cost on a pet headstone?
Small online pet stones usually include a few lines of text in the price. Monument engravers who cut full-size headstones often charge by the letter, typically $8–$35/char[9], or a flat $50–$150/line[10]. A laser-etched portrait costs about $500–$800[6] (per one large retailer). Short wording on a smaller stone is the easiest way to keep the cost down.
Can a memorial stone hold my pet's ashes?
Yes. Some stones have a hollow underside sealed with a plug, or a cavity behind a screwed plate. Check the stated capacity: ashes typically weigh about 3-5% of body weight[11], so a large dog may need more space than most garden stones offer. A waterproof inner bag protects the ashes from damp.
Is it too late to get a stone for a pet who died years ago?
Not at all. Many families order a stone months or years later, once they know where they'll settle or when the grief has softened enough to choose words. If you're not sure exactly where your pet was buried, a stone can mark the general area or a spot in the garden they loved.
Do many families in Sitka choose a memorial stone?
We don't track local sales, but the numbers suggest plenty do. By our estimate, around 260 dogs and cats die in Sitka each year, from about 3,050 dog- or cat-owning households, and a large share of US owners say they'd prefer home burial (40.4% cremation; 34.9% home burial; 1.9% aquamation[12] in one survey). Many of those graves end up marked with a stone.
