Pet memorials in Foley: the local picture
Between the Gulf beaches, Bon Secour Bay and the slow creeks west of town, water is part of how many Foley residents spend their time, and some want a final moment there. Before you take ashes out on a boat or onto a public beach, look up the rules for that place and for scattering at sea. Splitting ashes, so some stay home in an urn or keepsake, keeps options open for later.
Retirees in Foley often have children and grandchildren spread across the country, so memorials that can be shared or shipped are useful. Small keepsakes, prints and paw impressions all travel easily. Before ordering, ask how much ash to expect for your pet's size, what engraving or photo work costs and how long delivery takes, and get the cremation and memorial priced together in writing.
On a property near Foley, a big natural boulder can make a striking memorial, but moving one is serious work. A tractor bucket or skid steer can shift it, yet stones slip and roll; keep people well clear, and never stand downhill. For anything over a few hundred pounds, ask the engraver whether they can carve it where it will stay.
About 30,354 people live in Foley, which makes it the 21st-largest of the 37 Alabama communities we cover. Mobile, roughly 30 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Foley run from there.
If you want to compare providers, look at Fairhope (15 miles), Daphne (20 miles) and Pensacola (29 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.
Our estimate
11,000
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Foley
How we calculated this
30,354 ÷ 2.5 = 12,142 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 11,000. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
930
dog and cat deaths per year in Foley, our estimate
How we calculated this
11,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 930 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

We built the this numbers from American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 State of the Industry and Montoya et al. 2023, Frontiers in Veterinary Science, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

How Alabama remembers its dead, and its pets
Cremation is less common in Alabama than in much of the world: about 42.3%[5] of people are cremated. That doesn't limit your options for a pet. Crematories serve most areas and a stone can mark ashes just as well as a grave. It simply means more families here choose burial, and stone makers are experienced with grave markers.
The Alabama figure comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Foley weather and your pet's stone
Plan installation around the heat. Setting a stone in Foley means digging, leveling and tamping gravel, which is heavy work when July highs sit near 91°F. An early morning in spring or fall is easier, and the ground is often softer then. There's no rush: a temporary marker holds the spot perfectly well through summer.
Hot, dry summers in Foley mean hard, baked soil for much of the year. If you're burying ashes under a stone, dig and water the spot the evening before to soften it. Stone set on sun-baked clay can shift when the first heavy rain arrives, so a compacted gravel bed is worth the effort even in a dry garden.

Budgeting for the stone, lettering and delivery
Pet memorial stones cover a wide price range in the US, and the material matters more than the size. Engraved garden stones start at ~$39[6] across three US sellers, while flat granite markers start from $157.95[7] and upright granite headstones run $258–$628[8]. The table shows published prices you can use to judge any quote from a maker serving Foley.
The full price table by product is on our Alabama page, and the services page explains what each option includes.

Burial, HOA and cemetery rules in Alabama
Some human cemeteries now have a pet section or accept a pet's ashes in a family plot, while many still refuse animals entirely. If you'd like your pet near relatives, ask the cemetery office for its written policy on pets, ashes and marker sizes before buying anything. Below is what we know about pet burial and scattering in Alabama.
Alabama keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Foley.
The rules that apply across Alabama (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Alabama page. Foley may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
From first idea to a stone in the ground
- Give yourself time. A stone has no deadline, and a fresh grave settles for a month or two before it can take a heavy marker.
- Talk about the words with your family. Kids tend to come up with the truest lines, and reading a phrase aloud is the quickest test of whether it belongs.
- Decide how permanent it should be. A marker resting on gravel can come with you to a new home; one bedded in concrete is there for good.
- Order from a maker who sends a proof, then hold your phone out at full reach to view it, which is close to the distance you'll read it from outdoors.
- Choose an installation day with soft ground and good weather, then scrape out a shallow hollow deep enough to take a 3 to 4 inch layer of gravel.
- Place the stone together. Turning it into a brief ritual helps many families: someone tells a memory, a well-loved toy goes beside it, or a plant goes in.
Keeping the memory close
Foley's yards are full of camellias, azaleas and palms, and many families want a memorial that fits a coastal garden: a stone among the shrubs, a planter by the lanai or a keepsake with a beach feel. Others keep ashes indoors. Because hurricanes can bring wind and flooding, an indoor memorial or one that's easy to lift and move may be the more practical choice here.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to Mobile to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Mobile (roughly 30 miles from Foley) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Foley?
Usually yes. Fairhope is about 15 miles away, Daphne is about 20 miles away and Pensacola is about 29 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Does the Foley climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 91°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
How do Alabama attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Alabama human cremation rate at about 42.3%[5]. We show it on the Foley page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Can I bury my pet in my backyard in Foley and put a stone on it?
In many places you can bury a pet on land you own, with rules about depth and distance from water, but cities and homeowners' associations can be stricter. Check the local notes on this page and your HOA rules. A stone marking the grave rarely needs any permission of its own once the burial itself is allowed.
How much does a pet memorial stone cost in Foley?
Published US prices give a good guide. Engraved garden stones start at ~$39[6], natural engraved river stones run $38–$115[10], flat granite markers start from $157.95[7] and upright granite headstones cost $258–$628[8] (per one large retailer). Delivery, a photo and cemetery setting fees are extra, so ask Foley makers for a written total.
