Cardiff, Wales
Local makers and practical limits in Cardiff
Cardiff's wet climate is worth thinking about before choosing an outdoor memorial. Painted wood and soft stone weather quickly in the rain, while slate, granite and glazed ceramic last much longer. A tree or shrub planted with a bio urn thrives in the mild, damp conditions. In a terraced house with a small yard, a potted plant or a wall plaque works well.
Many Cardiff families have favourite places outside the city: the Brecon Beacons, the Glamorgan Heritage Coast, or Penarth pier and the Bay barrage. Some want to scatter part of a pet's ashes somewhere meaningful. Do it discreetly and with respect for other visitors, and check with the landowner or park authority where needed. A little kept back in a keepsake means some of your pet stays close to home.
Families in Cardiff often start with a temporary marker. A fresh grave sinks as the soil settles over the first month or two, and a heavy stone set too soon can tilt. A flat paver, a potted plant or a painted rock marks the spot while you choose wording, and nobody has to rush a decision they'll look at for decades.
Cardiff is home to about 481,000 people, the largest of the 2 Wales communities we cover.
Families in Cardiff often end up using a provider from Bristol (26 miles), Swansea (34 miles) and Bath (36 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.
Our estimate
145,000
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Cardiff
How we calculated this
481,000 ÷ 2.4 = 200,417 households; × 41% (dog) + 31% (cat) = 145,000. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
12,000
dog and cat deaths per year in Cardiff, our estimate
How we calculated this
145,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.74 yrs) ≈ 12,000 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

How local customs shape pet memorials
Because cremation is so common in United Kingdom (about 80.46%[5] of people are cremated), outdoor memorials here often work alongside an urn indoors. A common pattern is to keep most of the ashes at home, bury a small portion in the garden and set a stone over it. That way the garden has a place to visit and nothing is lost if you move.
Cremation Society of Great Britain, Progress of Cremation 1885-2025 (2025) is where the United Kingdom figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Cardiff tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
How the climate in Cardiff ages a memorial
Before you set a stone, watch the spot for a week at different times of day. A place in deep shade stays damp and grows moss; one in full afternoon sun makes a photo etching hard to read and heats dark granite. A spot with morning sun and afternoon shade suits most stones and most visits.

What drives the price of a pet memorial stone
If your pet was cremated, burying the ashes in a pet cemetery near Cardiff can cost far less than a full burial: one Sussex cemetery charges £60–£145[6] depending on whether you attend. Any stone or plaque is usually extra, and many cemeteries set their own rules on size. Ask for the rules and a written price before ordering a stone.

Home burial, rentals and pet cemeteries in Wales
Three sets of rules decide where a pet memorial stone can go in Wales: the public rules on burying a pet, private rules from your homeowners' association, landlord or strata, and the marker rules of any pet cemetery. A stone over buried ashes or in a planter usually raises no issue at all; a whole-body grave and an upright headstone raise the most questions.
In the UK, many families bury a pet at home: about 27% did so in a recent CMA survey[8]. In England, the Environment Agency sets guidance on depth and distance from water for pet burials, and rules differ in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. A garden stone itself needs no permission. If your pet rests in a pet cemetery, expect marker size rules and yearly maintenance fees, and ask whether the stone can come with you if you move.
The rules that apply across Wales (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Wales page. Cardiff may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
How to choose, order and set a pet stone
- Photograph the spot now. Makers can recommend proportions far better when they can see the bed or grave the stone is going into.
- Set a rough budget. Include the stone, lettering, delivery and any cemetery setting fee; our memorial budget planner adds it up.
- Choose the material. Let your local freeze and heat decide, not how it looks in the brochure.
- Draft two or three wording options and pick the one that still feels right after a few days.
- Send the details for quotes. Size, material, wording, photo and delivery address are all a maker needs.
- Approve the proof and arrange delivery, then set the stone on drained gravel so it stays level for years.
Remembering your pet beside the stone
Wales has a long tradition of remembering, from chapel graveyards to memorial benches on favourite viewpoints, and Cardiff families often carry that into how they remember a pet. A small urn on a shelf, a slate plaque in the garden, a framed paw print or a pendant with a little ash are all common. Welsh slate, famous for its durability, makes a lasting marker outdoors.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Cardiff?
Usually yes. Bristol is about 26 miles away, Swansea is about 34 miles away and Bath is about 36 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Roughly how many pets die in Cardiff each year?
Our estimate is around 12,000. It comes from Cardiff's population (about 481,000), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 145,000 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
Why does the Cardiff page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, Progress of Cremation 1885-2025 (2025) reports about 80.46%[5] of United Kingdom residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
How do I set a memorial stone so it stays level?
Dig a shallow bed slightly larger than the stone, add 2 to 4 inches of gravel, tamp it firm and level it with a board and a spirit level. Settle the stone on top and check again. For a lawn, set it flush with the grass so a mower can pass over. Heavy upright stones need a proper footing.
What does a pet cemetery cost in the UK?
Published fees vary. UK plot fees often range from £200–£800+[9]. At one Sussex pet cemetery, a green burial costs £650–£810[10] by weight, burying ashes costs £60–£145[6], and annual maintenance runs £45–£75/yr[11] per plot. A stone is usually extra and must meet the cemetery's size rules.
Can I have my pet's photo etched onto a stone?
Yes. Makers use a laser on polished black granite to create a gray-scale portrait. Results depend on the picture: send the original file, taken in daylight, with your pet looking toward the camera. Dark pets on dark backgrounds and pale pets on pale ones lose their outline, so ask for background removal and approve a proof.
