Pet Memorial Stones in the United Kingdom: what to know
Whether you buy from a local stonemason in the United Kingdom or order online, the questions that protect you are the same: what exactly is the stone, how deep is the lettering, will I see a proof, and what's the delivered total? Our 40 local pages, starting with London, Birmingham and Leeds, add weather and rules for each place.
The climate across the United Kingdom can vary a great deal between regions, and for a memorial stone that decides almost everything: dense granite for places with hard frosts, carved rather than painted lettering for sunny ones, and good drainage everywhere. Each city page shows the local climate where we have records, with notes on which stones suit it.
We cover 40 communities in the United Kingdom, from London, Birmingham and Leeds to smaller towns.

How we calculated this
The sum of our per-city estimates for the 40 communities in the United Kingdom on this site: each city's population ÷ national average household size × the national share of households with a pet. Households with several pets count once.

How the United Kingdom remembers its dead, and its pets
Scattering is common in the United Kingdom, since cremation accounts for roughly 83.0%[1] of human deaths there, and many families scatter a pet's ashes on a beach or a favorite trail. You can't leave a stone there, but you can bring the place home: a pebble from that beach set beside an engraved marker, or the trail's name carved on the stone itself.
The cremation figure for the United Kingdom comes from Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities (FBCA) death & cremation statistics (2024). It counts people, not pets, so treat it as a guide to local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
What drives the price of a pet memorial stone
If your pet was cremated, burying the ashes in a pet cemetery near the United Kingdom can cost far less than a full burial: one Sussex cemetery charges £60–£145[2] depending on whether you attend. Any stone or plaque is usually extra, and many cemeteries set their own rules on size. Ask for the rules and a written price before ordering a stone.
We haven't found a UK-wide survey of pet memorial stone prices, so we won't guess at one. What is published are pet cemetery fees, which matter if the stone will sit in one. A Sussex pet cemetery charges £650–£810[3] for a green burial by weight, and UK plot fees often range from £200–£800+[4]. The table sets those beside published US stone prices for scale.
| Item | Published price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Pet cemetery plot fees (UK, typical) | £200–£800+[4] | Depends on location and size |
| Green pet burial, Sussex example | £650–£810[3] | By weight; maintenance to year-end included |
| Formal attended burial with coffin | £980–£1,140[5] | About 51% more than a green burial[6] |
| Burying ashes at a pet cemetery | £60–£145[2] | Unattended or attended |
| Annual plot maintenance | £45–£75/yr[7] | Per plot, per year |
| Flat granite marker (US price, for scale) | from $157.95[8] | No UK-wide stone price survey found |
| Engraved garden stone (US price, for scale) | from $38.95[9] | Ask UK makers for a written quote |

Where a pet stone can go in the United Kingdom
Before you dig anywhere in the United Kingdom, find out where underground cables and pipes run; in the US, calling 811 gets them marked for free. Then check any homeowners' association covenants, since some limit permanent features or anything visible from the street. A small flush stone in a backyard bed rarely breaks any rule.
In the UK, many families bury a pet at home: about 27% did so in a recent CMA survey[11]. In England, the Environment Agency sets guidance on depth and distance from water for pet burials, and rules differ in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. A garden stone itself needs no permission. If your pet rests in a pet cemetery, expect marker size rules and yearly maintenance fees, and ask whether the stone can come with you if you move.
A step-by-step plan for your situation
- Mark the spot simply for now. While the soil is still sinking and the words aren't settled, something temporary, like a paver, a pot or a circle of pebbles, is enough to show where your pet rests.
- Decide where the stone will live long term: your garden, a pet cemetery, a planter or somewhere that can move with you.
- Choose the material for your climate. Granite for hard winters and strong sun; slate or river rock where it's mild and dry.
- Write the wording and count the letters. On most small stones there's room for a name, the years and a single brief line; the memorial stone planner will tell you whether yours fits.
- Ask two or three makers for written quotes that include lettering, any photo, delivery and setting.
- Approve a proof before anything is cut. Have a second person at home read every letter of it.
- Set the stone on compacted gravel so it drains and stays level, and add a plant beside it if you like.
Keeping the memory close
A stone doesn't have to be the only memorial. Some families keep most of the ashes indoors in an urn, bury a spoonful under the garden stone and keep a paw print or collar in a memory box. Each piece does a different job, and together they give you somewhere to look, something to hold and a place to visit.
The services page compares what each option includes, the planning tools turn your animal's details into figures, and the poll results show what other families chose. All locations lists every region we cover.

Questions people ask
Is a local stonemason or an online maker better in the United Kingdom?
It depends on the stone. For heavy granite and upright headstones, a local monument company that delivers and sets the stone is often worth it. For small engraved stones and river rocks, online makers are usually cheaper and include lettering. Whichever you choose, approve a written proof before anything is cut.
When is the best time of year to set a pet memorial stone in the United Kingdom?
Late spring and early fall are easiest in most places: the ground is soft enough to dig and the weather is comfortable. In freezing areas, wait until the ground thaws. A fresh grave also needs a month or two to settle before a heavy stone goes on it, so a temporary marker is a good first step.
How many communities do you cover in the United Kingdom?
We currently have local pet memorial stone guides for 40 communities in the United Kingdom, including London, Birmingham and Leeds. Each page covers local weather, which stones suit it, published prices, burial and cemetery notes, and how delivery usually works there.
How do heavy granite stones get delivered to rural parts of the United Kingdom?
Large granite pieces tend to go by truck freight, and the driver may leave them at the roadside or ask you to collect from a depot. Before paying, ask who unloads it, how far it will be carried and who pays if a corner is chipped in transit. Some local monument makers deliver and set stones on their regular runs.
Can I place a memorial stone for my pet in a public park in the United Kingdom?
Generally no. Public land managers rarely permit private markers, and some also restrict scattering without the landowner's or local authority's consent. Some councils and parks departments offer memorial benches or trees with a dedication plaque. Most families remember the park in the stone's wording and set the stone itself at home.
What if I rent my home in the United Kingdom?
Choose a memorial you can take with you. A garden stone set on gravel lifts out in minutes, and a stone with a sealed ashes compartment keeps your pet with you if you move. Ask your landlord before burying anything or setting a stone in concrete, and avoid anything that changes the garden permanently.
